The Panthère de Cartier is a slim, jewelry-forward quartz watch whose identity comes as much from its linked metal bracelet as its rounded-square dial. Cartier’s small and medium steel models measure 23 × 30 mm and 27 × 37 mm respectively, both with 6 mm cases. Those dimensions make size comparison concrete, but wrist fit still depends on your proportions and a try-on.
What makes the Panthère de Cartier distinctive?
Cartier describes the watch as “Designed in the 1980s” and says it takes its name from a bracelet of the same name. Cartier’s collection description connects the model’s identity to the bracelet, not just the dial. The fine, articulated-looking links give the watch a jewelry-like presence, while the silvered face, Roman numerals and blue hands retain a recognizably traditional Cartier look.
Who What Wear UK dates the watch’s debut to 1983 and its return to 2017; Marie Claire UK gives the same introduction and revival dates. These are editorial accounts of the history, while Cartier’s own cited wording places the design in the 1980s. What are the small and medium steel models like on paper?
Cartier lists two steel quartz references that make a useful size comparison. Both are 6 mm thick and share the same principal dial, crown and bracelet details; the medium is larger in both width and height. The specifications below come from Cartier’s indexed official product listings.

The medium reference adds 4 mm in each stated case dimension, without adding thickness. That gives a practical starting point for comparing footprint, not a rule for choosing: case dimensions alone cannot establish how either model will sit on a particular wrist. Try both sizes if possible, and assess the dial’s presence and bracelet fit in person.
How does the Panthère compare with the Cartier Tank?
In Who What Wear UK’s editorial comparison, the Panthère has a square face with rounded edges, while the Tank is rectangular. The article also contrasts the Panthère’s metal-bracelet presentation with Tank options in metal and leather. This is a useful design distinction, not an exhaustive statement about every current or historical reference; check the exact catalog models you are considering.

The cited small and medium Panthère steel references use quartz movements. That should not be generalized to every vintage, special, or future Panthère model without checking its individual specifications.

Whether it is worth the price depends on what you value: Cartier design, the bracelet-led jewelry aesthetic, the case size, material and adornment. The cited editorial price examples are snapshots, not current official quotes. Who What Wear UK reported a UK price of £4,300 for a small steel model and £8,000 for a medium steel-and-yellow-gold model in an article published in 2026; its coverage also described rarer gold or diamond-set examples at much higher prices. Marie Claire UK listed a two-tone example at £8,000 in 2025. Prices vary by reference, material, setting, market and date, and no current official price is established here.
