Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic vs NOMOS Metro: Which Mechanical Dress Watch Is Right for You?

Choose the Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic if you want your dress watch to be a mechanical display: its hand-wound movement, exposed balance and escapement, hand-finished bridges, and six-day reserve are the point of ownership. Choose the NOMOS Metro neomatik 39 if you want a quieter Bauhaus watch that is automatic, markedly thinner, and rated for more everyday splash exposure.

The C1 is the larger and more expensive watch at 41mm by 14.1mm, with 30m water resistance and prices from €5,595 on a strap. The 38.5mm Metro is only 8.4mm thick, has 5atm water resistance, and is listed at €3,700 including VAT. The right choice depends less on abstract specifications than on whether you want to look at the mechanism or forget about it under a cuff.

What are the Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic and NOMOS Metro neomatik 39?

They are two very different interpretations of a mechanical dress watch. The C1 Loco Classic puts its regulating organ and decorative architecture at the front of the experience. The Metro neomatik 39 reference 1113 hides its mechanics behind a restrained, highly legible dial and a slim case.

Both use sapphire crystals and sapphire casebacks, but their priorities diverge. Christopher Ward uses a 904L stainless-steel case, elaborate dial construction, and a manual movement with a 144-hour reserve. NOMOS uses a compact automatic caliber and a minimalist urban design intended to disappear beneath a shirt cuff.

How do their designs differ?

Why is the C1 Loco Classic more visually dramatic?

The C1’s dial is built around a visible balance wheel and escapement beneath an off-center white ceramic time sub-dial. That sub-dial has laser-engraved Roman numerals and blue-PVD curved hands, while the surrounding base combines texture with a mother-of-pearl-powder varnish. The result is a layered composition in which the regulating organ is part of the dial furniture rather than something reserved for the caseback.

Christopher Ward combines brushed and polished surfaces on the 904L steel case and supplies domed sapphire crystals plus a sapphire exhibition back. The movement bridges receive specialist hand finishing, so the watch offers something to examine from both sides. Digital Editor Tom Austin of Time+Tide described the concept as “an interesting demonstration of just how versatile a movement-led design can be.”

Why does the Metro look more restrained?

Mark Braun’s Metro design uses a galvanized, white-silver-plated dial with gray indexes at three, nine, and twelve o’clock. Oxidized black hands provide the primary time display, while a red seconds hand supplies the only strong color accent. There is no exposed escapement competing with the dial, so the watch reads first as a clean timekeeper and only second as a piece of mechanical engineering.

The Metro also has a domed sapphire crystal and sapphire caseback, but its visual language is deliberately quieter. NOMOS describes it as a modern bestseller that is large and automatic while remaining as slender as a hand-wound watch. That balance of simplicity and technical thinness is the central appeal.

Which watch is smaller and easier to wear?

The Metro is substantially thinner and slightly shorter from lug to lug. That difference matters more under a cuff than the small difference in diameter: a 14.1mm case can feel tall on the wrist, whereas an 8.4mm case usually slides under formal sleeves with little resistance.

Specification Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic NOMOS Metro neomatik 39 (1113)
Case diameter 41mm 38.5mm
Thickness 14.1mm 8.4mm
Lug-to-lug 48mm 45.5mm
Lug width 22mm 19mm
Case material 904L stainless steel Stainless steel
Crystal and back Domed sapphire crystals and sapphire exhibition back Domed sapphire crystal and sapphire caseback
Water resistance 30m (3atm) 5atm; NOMOS labels it splash-proof

Diameter alone does not settle the fit. The C1’s 48mm length and 14.1mm height make it the more demanding watch, especially on a smaller or flatter wrist. The Metro’s 45.5mm lug-to-lug is the safer starting point when you are uncertain, although curved lugs, strap stiffness, and wrist shape still determine the final impression.

How do the movements and winding systems compare?

What does the C1’s CW-003 offer?

The CW-003 is an in-house, hand-wound caliber operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). It has 29 jewels, twin barrels, a free-sprung balance, and a stated accuracy tolerance of -0/+7 seconds per day. Its 144-hour reserve equals six days, an unusually long interval for a manually wound dress watch.

Manual winding is intentional here. You interact with the crown, then spend nearly a week looking at the movement before the watch needs attention again. Twin barrels help provide the long reserve, while the free-sprung balance and the stated tolerance describe the maker’s regulation target; they do not guarantee that every individual watch will show exactly the same daily rate in every position.

What does the Metro’s DUW 3001 offer?

The Metro uses NOMOS’s automatic DUW 3001. The caliber is 3.2mm high, uses the NOMOS swing system, and is rated for up to 43 hours of power reserve. Automatic winding means normal wrist motion replenishes the reserve while you wear the watch, so it is the more convenient choice for a watch that rotates through daily use.

The current NOMOS product page lists 37 jewels for this reference. An older data sheet lists 27, so the current product-page specification should be treated as the present figure if jewel count matters to you.

Which is better for everyday wear and water exposure?

The Metro has the practical edge. Its automatic winding reduces daily interaction, its 8.4mm profile is easier under a cuff, and its 5atm rating gives more margin for ordinary splashes than the C1’s 30m (3atm) rating. NOMOS explicitly calls the Metro splash-proof, which is the appropriate expectation for routine incidental water rather than deliberate aquatic use.

The C1’s 30m rating is adequate for keeping rain and minor splashes at bay when the crown and seals are in good condition, but it is not a reason to choose the watch for swimming or water-heavy activities. Its large, open dial and decorative construction signal that the watch is designed for attentive ownership, not as a casual sports watch.

Water-resistance numbers are laboratory-style ratings, not a promise that a watch can be exposed to any water situation indefinitely. Crown position, gasket age, impacts, and temperature changes can all affect real-world protection. Treat both watches as dress watches and keep water exposure within the maker’s stated use.

How much do the C1 Loco Classic and Metro cost?

The C1 carries a substantial premium, and the exact gap depends on currency, taxes, and whether you choose its strap or bracelet. Christopher Ward reports separate prices for a strap and a 904L Consort bracelet. NOMOS lists a euro price including VAT, while Wempe lists a US price before tax, so those figures are not like-for-like totals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Configuration Published price Qualification
C1 Loco Classic on strap €5,595 / US$5,995 / £4,295 Reported Christopher Ward pricing
C1 Loco Classic on 904L Consort bracelet €5,855 / US$6,275 / £4,495 Reported Christopher Ward pricing
Metro neomatik 39 steel €3,700 NOMOS price including VAT
Metro neomatik 39 steel US$4,750 Wempe listing before tax

Using the published figures without converting currencies, the C1 on a strap is €1,895 above the Metro’s euro price and US$1,245 above the Wempe US listing. Those arithmetic differences should not be read as a universal out-the-door gap because VAT, sales tax, exchange rates, and retailer terms vary by market.

Preorder reports for the C1 indicated deliveries expected in mid-December 2026. Delivery dates and stock are volatile, so confirm availability and the estimated dispatch date at checkout rather than treating that report as a guarantee.

What do you get for the C1’s premium?

The premium buys a different kind of experience rather than a simple upgrade in every measurable category.

  • A visible regulating organ: the balance and escapement are part of the dial view, giving the watch an immediate conversation point.
  • More elaborate finishing: hand-finished bridges, textured dial work, ceramic, and mother-of-pearl-powder varnish create a layered object to inspect.
  • A six-day reserve: the CW-003 can run for 144 hours after winding, far longer than the Metro’s stated 43 hours.
  • A more imposing case: 41mm by 14.1mm and 48mm lug-to-lug make the C1 feel like a substantial mechanical sculpture.
  • Lower water-resistance margin: its 30m rating requires more conservative water habits than the Metro’s 5atm specification.

If those first three points are the reason you are shopping for a mechanical watch, the premium has a coherent purpose. If you mainly need a thin formal watch that starts running when you put it on, the extra money buys complications you may rarely look at.

What makes the Metro a better daily dress watch?

The Metro concentrates on discretion and convenience. At 8.4mm high, it has the proportions that make a dress watch easy to wear with tailored clothing. Its automatic movement removes the need to wind it every few days while it is on the wrist, and its 5atm splash-proof rating gives a little more practical latitude.

Its trade-offs are equally clear. The 43-hour reserve is shorter than the C1’s six days, so the Metro can stop after a weekend off the wrist. The dial is intentionally calm, with no exposed escapement or elaborate bridge work to reward close inspection. You are paying for thin engineering and a clean design rather than spectacle.

Which watch suits your wrist and wardrobe?

Choose the C1 if you dress around the watch

The C1 works best when the watch is meant to be noticed. Its blue hands, ceramic sub-dial, visible escapement, and mixed case finishing can anchor a restrained outfit, but the 14.1mm profile may compete with a narrow shirt cuff. A 22mm strap also gives it a broader visual footprint than the Metro.

Choose the Metro if the watch must disappear under a cuff

The Metro’s 19mm lug width, 45.5mm lug-to-lug span, and 8.4mm height create a more compact silhouette. Its gray, black, and red dial details remain distinctive without demanding attention, making it suitable for formal clothing, business casual wear, and a rotation in which the watch should not dominate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should you try them on?

If your wrist size is uncertain, try the Metro first because its shorter length and lower height are less likely to overhang or feel top-heavy. The C1 deserves an in-person try where possible: its dimensions are not extreme in isolation, but the combination of length, thickness, and dial architecture makes its presence much stronger than a typical 38–41mm dress watch.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do the straps and case details affect ownership?

The C1 is offered on a strap or a 904L Consort bracelet, with 22mm lugs. The bracelet option increases the price but reinforces the watch’s substantial, jewelry-like character. Its brushed and polished case surfaces will show light differently as the wrist moves, complementing the movement-focused design.

The Metro is specified with a black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap, 19mm lug width, and quick-change spring bars. Quick-change hardware makes strap swaps less tool-dependent, but replacement straps still need the correct 19mm width and compatible spring-bar fit. The narrower lug size also preserves the Metro’s lighter visual proportion.

Is the C1 Loco Classic worth the premium over the Metro?

It is worth the premium when the mechanical display is the reason you want the watch. The C1 gives you a hand-wound ritual, a free-sprung 4Hz movement with a six-day reserve, visible balance and escapement, and hand-finished bridges in a design that is deliberately unusual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not the better value if your definition of value is effortless daily wear. The Metro is thinner, automatic, less expensive at the published euro price, and specified for more splash resistance. Its shorter reserve and quieter dial are compromises only if you wanted the C1’s theatrical mechanism.

Use this decision rule:

  • Buy the C1 Loco Classic for movement visibility, decorative finishing, long reserve, and a watch that becomes a focal point. Accept manual winding, 14.1mm thickness, 30m water resistance, and the higher price.
  • Buy the Metro neomatik 39 for a slim automatic watch that can live under a cuff and handle ordinary splashes with more margin. Accept a 43-hour reserve and a deliberately restrained appearance.
  • Pause and try both on if lug-to-lug fit is your main concern. The Metro’s 45.5mm length is the safer baseline; the C1’s 48mm length and height should be judged on your own wrist.

What should you check before ordering?

  1. Confirm the exact configuration. The C1 price changes between strap and 904L bracelet; verify which is in the cart.
  2. Check the currency and tax basis. The NOMOS euro price includes VAT, while the cited US retailer price is before tax.
  3. Measure lug-to-lug, not just diameter. Compare 48mm for the C1 and 45.5mm for the Metro with a watch that already fits you.
  4. Plan your winding habit. The C1 is manual; the Metro winds automatically while worn but may stop after its shorter reserve when left off the wrist.
  5. Set realistic water expectations. Treat the C1’s 30m rating and the Metro’s 5atm splash-proof label as dress-watch protection, not a swimming specification.
  6. Verify strap compatibility. The Metro uses a 19mm lug width and quick-change spring bars; order replacement straps to that measurement.
  7. Recheck delivery timing. The C1’s reported mid-December 2026 preorder delivery is subject to change, so rely on the seller’s current estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do NOMOS documents show different jewel counts for the Metro neomatik 39?

The current product page lists 37 jewels, while an older data sheet lists 27. For the present reference, use the current product-page figure and treat the older document as a superseded specification.

Can I swim with either of these watches?

Neither model should be selected as a swimming watch on the information provided. NOMOS calls the Metro splash-proof, and the C1 is rated 30m (3atm); keep both for incidental water and follow the maker’s care guidance.

Could the C1 Loco Classic delivery date move after I preorder?

Yes. The mid-December 2026 timing was reported as an expectation, not a guaranteed appointment. Availability, production, and shipping can change, so confirm the latest estimate with the seller before paying.
