The Christopher Ward C12 Loco pairs a striking open-worked display with the brand’s manually wound CW-003 movement, which is specified for a six-day power reserve. Its 41 mm steel case and refined Twelve-family design make it an ambitious flagship; its 30 m water resistance and premium launch pricing are important practical considerations.
What is the Christopher Ward C12 Loco?
The C12 Loco is Christopher Ward’s flagship model in the Twelve family. It retains the collection’s distinctive 12-facet dodecagonal bezel, but removes the crown guards and blends the bezel more smoothly into the case. Rather than abandoning the Twelve’s design, the Loco develops it into a more sculptural setting for an unusually exposed movement.
The time-only display has offset hours and minutes, with the balance wheel and escapement visible on the dial side. The effect is symmetrical and architectural, though more visually complex than a conventional dial. Christopher Ward called the watch “the most advanced watch the company has ever made,” as quoted in Dave Sergeant’s 2025 Fratello Watches review.
What does the CW-003 movement offer?
The CW-003 is a manually wound movement with two mainspring barrels and a specified 144-hour, or six-day, power reserve when fully wound. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has 29 jewels. The specification lists a free-sprung balance, hand-polished bridges and an accuracy tolerance of -0/+7 seconds per day.

The long reserve is useful if you rotate watches: a full wind can keep the Loco running for nearly a week, though the stated duration is a specification, not a guarantee of identical real-world performance in every condition. Manual winding also means the wearer must wind it; it is not an automatic movement.
How large is the C12 Loco, and how does it wear?
Fratello’s 2025 review gives the stainless-steel case dimensions as 41 mm in diameter, 47.5 mm long and 13.7 mm thick including the front and rear crystals. Without the crystals, the listed thickness is 9.75 mm. The case is made from 316L stainless steel and has a box-style sapphire crystal; the display back combines sapphire with 316L steel.
Reviewer Dave Sergeant reports that the case and sloping, integrated central lugs sat securely on his 6.8-inch (17.25 cm) wrist. That is one reviewer’s wearing observation, not a fit guarantee: wrist shape, strap choice and personal comfort preferences matter.

Which strap and bracelet options are available?
The Loco was described with an integrated rubber strap in white or black, fitted with Christopher Ward’s Bader Buckle, or an integrated stainless-steel bracelet with micro-adjustment and a butterfly clasp. Sergeant notes that the rubber strap is specially shaped to meet the case flanks and is thinner than a typical integrated strap. Its keeper-less buckle arrangement hides the strap tail.

That observation applies to the reviewed configuration; the open-worked display remains more visually intricate than a simple solid dial.
What are the C12 Loco’s limitations?
The listed water resistance is 3 ATM, or 30 metres. That is a modest rating for a sports-watch design and should not be treated as an invitation to swim or dive with it. For activity involving water, follow Christopher Ward’s current care guidance rather than assuming the watch’s appearance implies greater protection.

The open-worked face prioritizes movement visibility and visual drama over the calm simplicity of a traditional dial. Whether that improves or detracts from everyday readability is a matter of taste; the Fratello reviewer specifically praised the white version’s contrast.

Is the Christopher Ward C12 Loco worth its price?
The case for the Loco rests on the combination of its distinctive open-worked design and a manually wound, hand-finished in-house movement with a six-day reserve. At its stated launch prices, it offered an unusual movement specification and presentation in a steel sports-watch format. Sergeant’s review argues that similarly priced mainstream Swiss watches generally use mass-produced movements with less elaborate finishing, while some independent brands rely on outsourced movements or simpler decoration. That is the reviewer’s market comparison, not a comprehensive survey of competing watches.
For a buyer who values movement architecture, visible finishing and a long reserve, the Loco makes a distinctive proposition. Someone seeking a watch for regular swimming, a discreet dial or an easily verified current deal should weigh its 30 m rating, expressive display and changing availability carefully.
