The Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000m, reference BN7020-09E, is a light-powered saturation-diving watch rated by Citizen to 1,000 metres. Its headline trade-off is clear from the official dimensions: the global launch specification lists a 52.5 mm case diameter and 22.2 mm thickness. Those numbers make this a purpose-built, unusually large tool watch—not a model whose everyday fit can be assumed from its specifications alone.
What is the Citizen BN7020-09E?
Introduced in 2017, the BN7020-09E is part of Citizen’s Promaster Marine line. Citizen describes it as designed for saturation diving to 1,000 m and says it was the first watch to combine its Eco-Drive technology with that depth rating. That “first” is Citizen’s own claim, not an independently verified historical finding. Citizen’s feature page explains the intended use and its engineering approach.
It is best understood as a specialist instrument rather than a conventional diver’s watch with an unusually high number on the dial. The depth rating, case scale, bezel lock and screw-lock crown all point to a design built around demanding underwater use. The specifications establish those intentions; they do not, by themselves, establish how the watch feels on a particular wrist or how it performs in independent testing.
How large and heavy is it?
Citizen’s 2017 global launch announcement gives the case diameter as 52.5 mm and thickness as 22.2 mm. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not measurements made for this article. Citizen Italy’s regional listing gives a 53 mm diameter and 178 g weight. The sources differ slightly on diameter precision, so the figures are best kept tied to their respective markets rather than treated as a single independently measured value. At more than 52 mm across and over 22 mm thick, the published dimensions signal substantial wrist presence. Diameter and thickness alone cannot tell you whether the case will overhang your wrist: lug-to-lug length, case shape, strap articulation and wrist circumference matter too, and no lug-to-lug figure or hands-on fit measurement is established here. Anyone considering the watch for regular wear should treat fit as an open question, not infer comfort from its technical specification.
What does 1,000 m saturation-diving water resistance mean?
Citizen rates the watch for saturation diving to 1,000 m. Its instruction manual equates that depth rating to 100 atm of water pressure. The rating and conversion are manufacturer specifications; neither represents a water-pressure test performed for this article. Citizen’s instruction manual.

Saturation diving involves extended work under pressure, often using helium-containing breathing gas. Citizen explains that helium can permeate materials and increase pressure inside a watch, potentially putting the crystal or movement at risk when pressure conditions change. The company says it assessed the watch’s structure, materials and assembly to achieve water and helium/mixed-gas resistance at the stated 1,000 m level. This is Citizen’s account of the engineering rationale, not independent verification of the construction or performance. Citizen’s engineering explanation.
How does the Eco-Drive movement work?
The BN7020-09E uses Citizen Caliber J210, an Eco-Drive movement powered by light rather than a conventional disposable battery. Citizen lists accuracy of ±15 seconds per month and approximately 1.5 years of operation on a full charge. The runtime is a stated full-charge figure, not a guarantee that the watch will run for that long under every storage or light-exposure condition. Citizen’s launch announcement.

Is it practical to wear?
The published scale is the strongest practical clue, but it is not a substitute for wearing the watch. A 52.5 mm diameter and 22.2 mm thickness can make fit, sleeve clearance and day-to-day handling more demanding than with a smaller diver. The available specifications do not establish wrist comfort, lug overhang, strap feel, bezel action, crown handling, lume duration or nighttime legibility in real use.

For a potential buyer, the useful next step is to try the exact reference on the wrist, ideally with the strap adjusted as you would wear it. Pay attention to how far the case extends beyond the wrist, whether its thickness catches on sleeves, and whether the bezel and crown are comfortable to operate. Those are personal fit and handling questions, not conclusions that can be drawn from Citizen’s published figures.
What does the BN7020-09E cost?
Price depends on market and date. Citizen’s global launch announcement gave a suggested retail price of USD 2,300 in 2017. The current Japan product page surfaced for this article lists JPY 330,000 including tax, or JPY 300,000 before tax. These are different market references from different dates; neither establishes a current US street price, present-day availability or a transaction price elsewhere. 2017 global launch announcement · Citizen Japan listing.
