The feature’s focus is how adidas staff describe working with athletes—and how Kenefick’s own race unfolded.
What happens inside adidas HQ?
Kenefick describes a two-day Home of Innovation summit in Herzogenaurach, the Bavarian town where adidas was founded. The program included a bicycle tour of the campus, with stops at the Laces building and Home Ground, as well as keynotes by CEO Bjørn Gulden and Chief Creative Officer Alasdhair Willis. She also visited the Innovation Lab. These are details from Kenefick’s account in Highsnobiety’s feature, not an independent assessment of adidas facilities.
How does the feature describe adidas’s athlete-centered design?
The feature presents the Innovation Lab as a place where creative, design and innovation teams work with athletes, using their individual needs to inform apparel and footwear development. Nic Galway, adidas Senior Vice President of Global Design, describes his close daily work with athletes: “Now, I’m in the Lab every day, I’m with athletes every day, and we work really deeply in partnership. So we understand what the athlete needs from a science perspective.” He also says, “That’s the unlock.”
Kathryn Metcalfe, Director of Apparel Innovation, frames the relationship as performance-driven: “That relationship is really built around breaking records.” She also emphasizes practical details, saying, “Cool is really a big focus,” and “Even when you don’t think those few degrees are going to make a difference, it still does.” These are remarks reproduced in the Highsnobiety feature; they describe the staff’s approach rather than establish independently tested product outcomes.

What shoe did Courtney Kenefick wear for the Berlin Marathon?
Kenefick says she wore the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5, which the feature identifies as the latest consumer race shoe and says was based on the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3. Her account establishes which shoe she chose; it is not a comparative test or evidence that the shoe caused a particular race result.
How did Kenefick’s Berlin Marathon go?
Her race story is personal rather than a performance review. Kenefick recalls struggling to hit her goal time, then choosing to enjoy the day: taking in the Brandenburg Gate and continuing to the finish. She reports placing 16,684th and calls Berlin her fifth marathon.

The feature also reports that Sabastian Sawe ran 1:59:30 at the London Marathon in April 2026, which it describes as a world record and the first sanctioned sub-two-hour marathon. It says all six men’s and women’s podium finishers at the 2026 Berlin Marathon wore adidas. Those are claims reported by Highsnobiety, not independently verified here.
Kenefick’s closing contrast captures the feature’s perspective: adidas may be building “the future of fast,” but the marathon brought her back to “the future of fun.”
