Sublime for dry, everyday wear; a bad choice for swimming or diving. A leather strap can suit a dive-style watch without, by itself, changing the watch’s water resistance. But water can damage leather, so switch to a compatible rubber strap or metal bracelet before water activities—and follow the watchmaker’s guidance for your specific model.
Can you wear a dive watch on a leather strap?
Yes, if you mean wearing a dive-style watch in dry conditions. The case and strap have different jobs: the strap holds the watch on your wrist, while the case’s water resistance is a property of the watch. The manufacturer guidance cited here warns about water damage to leather; it does not say that fitting a leather strap changes a watch’s tested case rating. For a particular watch, confirm permitted water use with its manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
For water activities, the advice is clearer. Breitling says to avoid exposing leather and textile straps to water because they can be damaged irreparably, and recommends a metal bracelet or rubber strap for water-based activities. See Breitling’s water-resistance guidance.
What water and sunlight do to leather
Patek Philippe warns that “Leather straps can age prematurely in contact with water or when exposed to excessive sunlight.” Its watch-care recommendations also advise removing leather-strap watches at night so the leather can breathe. Leather may be a comfortable or dressier option for a dry day, but it is not a water-friendly strap material.

These are general material choices, not a guarantee that a particular watch is suitable for swimming or diving. The manufacturer’s instructions for the watch take precedence.
Check water resistance—and strap fit—separately
A depth marking alone does not establish that a watch meets every requirement for a divers’ watch. ISO 6425:2018, Horology — Divers’ watches, covers watches designed to withstand at least 100 m and fitted with a secured dive-time indication visible in darkness. It specifies requirements, test methods, and authorized manufacturer markings. ISO reports that the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current.

That standard is not a substitute for checking the specific watch’s rating, condition, and maker’s water-use instructions. Strap fit is a separate model-specific question: check the lug width and attachment before ordering a replacement. No universal strap size can be inferred without the watch model. Casio also directs owners to model-specific care and operating information in its watch support resources.

- For a dry day: Wear leather if it suits your style and is compatible with the watch.
- Before water activities: Change to a compatible rubber strap or metal bracelet, following the watchmaker’s instructions.
