Yes—if you want a deliberate casual contrast and the watch, outfit and fit can carry it. A low-profile, subdued NATO can work with relaxed tailoring; for a conventionally formal look, a slim leather strap is the safer choice. There is no established dress-code rule that forbids pairing a NATO strap with a dress watch.
Why a NATO strap changes a dress watch’s look
A NATO strap is associated with military utility and its distinctive one-piece, thread-through construction. On many dress watches, that practical, textile look contrasts with the slimmer, more polished appearance people usually associate with formal wear. Whether that contrast feels intentional or out of place depends on the occasion and the details—not on a universal rule.
The name can be misleading: NATO’s official history explains that it refers to the NATO Stock Number system used to identify standardized supply items, not to NATO branding. The British Ministry of Defence created the strap in 1973. NATO says the original was nylon, 20 mm wide and Admiralty grey, and longer than a conventional band so service personnel could wear it over a uniform. NATO’s account of the strap’s history provides that background.
When does the combination work?
For formal occasions
If the goal is a traditional formal appearance, choose a thin leather strap in a restrained colour and finish. A NATO adds textile and visible hardware, which can make the watch look more casual. That is conservative styling advice, not a formal dress-code prohibition.

For relaxed tailoring or a deliberate contrast
With a less formal outfit, a low-profile NATO in a solid or subdued colour can make the contrast look considered rather than accidental. A styling retailer suggests a leather NATO for people who find nylon too casual; treat that as one retailer’s opinion, not a consensus or etiquette standard. Watch Straps Australia’s styling advice discusses the option.
Check the watch’s proportions and the cuff
Look at the case and dial as well as the strap. Consider whether the extra textile and keeper arrangement make the watch look bulky or sit too high on your wrist. Then check how it feels under the sleeve you plan to wear. These are practical fit and styling checks; they are not defects shared by every NATO strap.

How to check fit before buying
- Confirm the lug width. Check the watch manufacturer’s specification or measure the distance between the lugs. The strap must match that width; a 22 mm strap is not a universal fit.
- Check strap length against your wrist. Strap length varies by product, so make sure there is enough length to fasten and manage any excess comfortably.
- Consider the changing process. Barton Watch Bands says a spring-bar tool may help when switching from a conventional strap, but is not always essential; its FAQ also suggests folding surplus strap length under the keeper. These are seller-specific tips, so follow the instructions for the strap and watch you own. Barton Watch Bands’ fit and FAQ guidance explains its approach.
One specific example shows why checking the specifications matters: Seiko Boutique UK lists its black nylon Alliance NATO strap, model L0FP02CJ0, as 22 mm wide and 280 mm long, and says it fits watches with 22 mm lug width. Those are specifications for that listed product, not default measurements for NATO straps or dress watches. See Seiko Boutique UK’s listing.

Sean Connery wore a striped regimental strap on a Rolex Submariner in Goldfinger (1964). That was nine years before the NATO strap was created in 1973, so it should not be described as an actual NATO strap. NATO’s history notes that genuine NATO straps appeared in later films. NATO’s history page makes the distinction.

A quick decision guide
- Choose slim leather when conventional formality is the priority.
- Try a subdued, low-profile NATO when you want a relaxed or intentionally unexpected look.
- Check the width, length and cuff fit before wearing it out; strap dimensions and fit are not universal.
- Swap back if it does not work. Changing straps does not permanently redefine the watch’s style.
