David Candaux’s watches bring together the Vallée de Joux’s watchmaking inheritance and an individual approach to engineering and design. After 18 years at Jaeger-LeCoultre and several years developing movements independently, he founded his own atelier in 2017 to make the watch he had imagined for years. His work is guided by “Le Cœur et l’Esprit”—the heart and mind—and expressed through hand-finishing, regional references and deliberately unconventional displays.
Who is David Candaux?
Born in 1979, Candaux grew up in the Vallée de Joux in a family with three generations of watchmaking connections. His official biography says his father specialized in complicated pocket watches, his grandfather worked in quality control at major manufactures, and his mother assembled chronographs at home. The brand also describes the forests, mountains and lakes around the valley as lasting sources of inspiration for his work. David Candaux’s official biography presents this family and regional background as the foundation of his approach.
That heritage is more than a setting in his story. Candaux’s watches pair technical ambition with visual references to the place where they are imagined, developed and hand-finished: the atelier in Le Solliat, in the Vallée de Joux.
How did Candaux become an independent watchmaker?
From apprentice to Jaeger-LeCoultre specialist
In a 2024 interview with MONOCHROME, Candaux said he joined Jaeger-LeCoultre as an intern in 1993 and began an apprenticeship in 1994, aged 15. He spent 18 years at the manufacture, working across serial production, complications, restoration, the technical office and prototyping. Alongside his work, he pursued evening studies that included micromechanical engineering and management. He left in 2011.

Developing movements, then making his own watch
After leaving Jaeger-LeCoultre, Candaux worked as an independent movement developer, including on projects for other makers. In his account to MONOCHROME, he described becoming dissatisfied with the constraints of a partnership and deciding to build the watch he had long wanted to make. “I had to create my own watch, the one I had been thinking about for years,” he said. He also recalled that two collectors ordered pieces after seeing the concept, helping him move forward.
Candaux presented the DC1 and founded his eponymous company in 2017. Looking back in 2024, he said, “I often tell people that it took me 17 years from the first idea to the creation of the DC1.” The long interval speaks to a design and development process that began well before the brand itself.
Phillips’ 2024 profile also recounts his Jaeger-LeCoultre and independent-development years, and identifies the MB&F HM6 as a public project from his later work. This wider experience helps explain why his own watches are not simply exercises in unusual appearance: their cases and displays are built around specific mechanical ideas.

What does “the heart and mind” mean in his watches?
The official biography names Candaux’s guiding philosophy “Le Cœur et l’Esprit,” or “the heart and mind.” The brand describes a design language that balances symmetry with asymmetry, purity with complexity, and strength with subtlety. In practice, that means a watch may present a striking, sculptural arrangement while also asking the wearer to notice how its mechanism and finishing fit together.

The official biography says Candaux has more than 36 patents and identifies the 30° inclined flying tourbillon and retractable Magic Crown as signature inventions. The brand’s explanation is that the inclined tourbillon passes through more positions in less time, while the crown retracts into the case. Those are the maker’s descriptions of the design intent; they do not establish a measured accuracy advantage in real-world use.
Hand-finishing is part of the same idea. Rather than treating decoration as an afterthought, the brand describes its watches as imagined, developed and finished at the Le Solliat atelier. The result aims to make mechanical complexity legible as part of the watch’s visual character.

What watches are in the current collection?
The models displayed on the official website at the time of writing form a four-watch 2026 collection. Their descriptions highlight different expressions of the brand’s mix of engineering, material and design.

The official DC6 Titanium page brings several defining elements together. Two sapphire domes shape the watch’s architecture, while the dial’s Pointes du Risoux pattern is hand-engraved on two titanium plates. The name refers to a forest near the atelier, tying a tactile surface treatment to the local landscape.

Inside is an in-house Grade 5 titanium calibre, decorated with Côtes du Solliat and hand-finished components. Its 30° inclined flying tourbillon also incorporates the small-seconds indication. MONOCHROME’s 2024 interview notes that the DC6 followed the DC1 in 2019 and moved the seconds display onto the tourbillon. That is a useful point of distinction in the model’s history, not a description of the complete current range.

In the 2024 MONOCHROME interview, Candaux described his priority plainly: “My main focus is the brand’s longevity.” That concern sits naturally alongside the long development of the DC1 and a business built around watches imagined and finished at a small atelier.

Production estimates should be treated cautiously. The brand’s biography says it makes “only a handful of pieces each year,” while Phillips estimated in 2024 that approximately 15 timepieces left the workshop annually. Those descriptions differ, and neither should be treated as an independently audited production figure.
For collectors, the practical route given by the brand is appointment-led inquiry. Its homepage also lists retailers and customer-care information; check the current official pages for contact details and terms before making decisions. Phillips’ article about a DC6 Solstice Bleu No. 00 concerns a past auction lot: it was scheduled for the New York Watch Auction: XII on 7–8 June 2025 with an estimate of USD 80,000–160,000. That historical estimate is not evidence of current availability or market value.
