The Longines Heritage Silver Arrow, reference L2.834.4.72.2, is a 2021 reissue of a 1950s design, updated with a 38.5 mm polished-steel case and the original’s distinctive striated indexes. Its silver opaline dial keeps the display deliberately simple: hours, minutes and seconds, with no date. An automatic L888.5 movement supplies a reported 72-hour power reserve, while 30 m water resistance makes this a dress-oriented watch rather than a choice for swimming.
What the Longines Silver Arrow is
The Heritage Silver Arrow L2.834.4.72.2 is a modern tribute to Longines’ 1956 Silver Arrow, not a dimension-for-dimension reproduction. The contemporary reference appeared in 2021. Monochrome Watches reported that Longines chose the name after an employee contest in 1955, which received 450 proposals; “Silver Arrow” evoked the era’s famous German racing cars. The original watch followed in 1956. Monochrome Watches’ 2021 review recounts that history.
Monochrome estimates the 1950s original at about 34 mm, compared with 38.5 mm for the reissue. It also notes that a 2009 reissue added a date and left out the distinctive striated indexes. The 2021 version restores those indexes and removes the date, bringing the visual emphasis closer to the early watch while retaining a larger modern case.
Design: restrained dial, distinctive details
The watch’s appeal rests on contrast: a clean silver dial, polished steel and carefully shaped markers rather than a crowded display. C W Sellors describes the dial as silver opaline; Monochrome calls it lightly grained and domed. Both note the elongated marker at six, accompanied by the revived “Silver Arrow” wording. The applied indexes have striated surfaces that catch the light and provide the clearest link to the original design.

Faceted dauphine hands carry slim luminous inserts, according to Monochrome. Hours, minutes and central seconds are the only indications. The absence of a date aperture preserves the dial’s symmetry, though it means there is no quick calendar reference. On the back, an engraving depicts a supersonic plane flying through stars—a motif associated with the Silver Arrow identity.
Size, materials and wearing considerations
The polished stainless-steel case measures 38.5 mm in diameter and approximately 10 mm thick, according to Monochrome. A domed, box-style sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating sits above the dial. The supplied brown calfskin strap closes with a pin buckle; Monochrome gives its width as 19 mm.

Those dimensions make the watch a relatively compact modern dress-watch option, but the 38.5 mm case is still notably larger than the roughly 34 mm original estimated by Monochrome. The 19 mm strap width is useful if replacing the strap: check lug fit, strap thickness and buckle compatibility for the particular replacement, rather than relying on width alone.
Movement and practical performance
The automatic Longines calibre L888.5 is reported with 21 jewels, a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour and an approximately 72-hour power reserve. Monochrome identifies a silicon balance spring and describes the calibre as based on an ETA 2892 ébauche; C W Sellors also describes the movement as based on ETA 2892. These are specifications reported in the two 2021 reviews, not results from an independent timing test.

A 72-hour reserve can let the watch sit through a weekend and still be running when picked up, depending on its state of wind and use. The watch is rated to 30 m water resistance by both reviews. Treat that as modest protection, not a swimming or diving rating; it is best approached as a dress watch and kept away from water exposure beyond ordinary caution.

Price, availability and warranty
The published prices are launch-era figures, not current quotes. Monochrome reported EUR 1,950 and USD 2,100 in March 2021; C W Sellors listed a UK recommended retail price of £1,650 in June 2021. The figures refer to different markets and publication dates, so they should not be treated as a single current global price.
Monochrome said deliveries had begun in some markets and reported a five-year warranty in 2021. Current production status, stock, pricing and warranty terms—including start date, exclusions and regional rules—are not established by those reports. Check with Longines or an authorized retailer for current details before buying.

Who the Silver Arrow suits
- Consider it if you want a time-only dial, an understated silver-and-steel look, and a heritage detail that is more distinctive than a plain baton-marker layout.
- Consider the size carefully if you prefer the proportions of the original-era watch: the modern case is 38.5 mm, versus Monochrome’s estimate of about 34 mm for the 1950s model.
- Look elsewhere if you need a date display, a watch intended for swimming or diving, or a verified current price and availability before considering the model.
