The same moon, heart, battery, or phone symbol can represent a device setting, a health metric, a workout control, or an app tile depending on your Fitbit model, software version, clock face, and the screen where it appears.
Use this guide by first identifying the context: the clock face, quick settings, an exercise screen, a health tile, a notification, or the Fitbit/Google Health phone app. Then match the symbol to the category below.
Start with the four most important Fitbit status icons
On many newer supported Fitbit devices, temporary status indicators appear when the screen wakes. They may disappear after about three seconds, but you can usually see them again in quick settings. Exact designs and locations vary by model. Google’s current navigation guide identifies four especially important indicators: Do Not Disturb, Sleep Mode, critically low battery, and phone disconnection.
| Icon or appearance | Usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Moon, muted notification symbol, or Do Not Disturb symbol | Do Not Disturb is enabled. Notifications, goal celebrations, and reminders are muted. | Open quick settings and tap Do Not Disturb to turn it off. |
| Moon, bed, or Sleep Mode symbol | Sleep Mode is active. Notifications are muted and the screen may dim or remain dark when you raise your wrist. | Open quick settings and disable Sleep Mode, or check whether a schedule is activating it. |
| Red, empty, or warning-marked battery | The battery is critically low, rather than merely below full. | Connect the Fitbit to its compatible charger and check the contacts if charging does not begin. |
| Crossed-out phone or disconnected-phone symbol | The Fitbit is not currently connected to the paired phone. | Bring the devices close together, confirm Bluetooth is on, open the Fitbit or Google Health app, and sync. |
Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode are related but not identical. Both can mute alerts, while Sleep Mode can also change screen behavior. Some devices may not allow both settings to operate simultaneously.

If supported on your model, status indicators can be managed under Settings → Display → Status indicators. For the current device-specific behavior, see Google’s Fitbit navigation and status-indicator guide.
Battery and charging symbols
Battery graphics vary from a simple outline to a percentage, lightning bolt, charging animation, or warning marker. Their meaning is generally determined by what the device is doing at the time.
| Symbol or state | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Battery outline or percentage | Current battery level. On some devices, swipe from the clock face or open quick settings to view it. |
| Partly filled or red battery | Battery is low and should be charged soon. |
| Empty battery or battery with an alert marker | Battery is critically low or the device cannot operate normally without charging. |
| Lightning bolt or animated battery | The device is charging. |
| Solid battery icon while charging | On supported devices, the battery has reached 100 percent. |
Use the charger designed for your exact Fitbit model. Align the charging contacts, clean them carefully if necessary, and try another USB power source. If the device was completely depleted, leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before assuming it has failed. Charging behavior differs by model, so do not treat one model’s recovery time as universal. See Google’s charging guidance for model-specific instructions.
Health and activity icons
Most health icons are informational tiles, not warnings. A footprint, flame, moon, or heart normally identifies a type of data rather than reporting a fault.
| Common graphic | What it usually represents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint, shoe, or walking figure | Steps or movement progress. | The graphic differs between models and clock faces. |
| Road, route, or location-style graphic | Distance traveled, often estimated from sensors and sometimes GPS. | GPS may be built in or supplied by the connected phone. |
| Stairs, building, or upward arrow | Floors climbed or elevation-related activity. | Not every Fitbit includes an altimeter or floors metric. |
| Flame or fire | Estimated calories burned. | This is energy expenditure, not calories consumed, and it is an estimate. |
| Colored heart, lightning bolt, or intensity target | Active Zone Minutes or time spent in elevated heart-rate zones. | Colors and labels depend on the device and software. |
Older Fitbit dashboards, including the Ionic’s Fitbit Today view, grouped steps, distance, floors, calories, active minutes, heart rate, exercise, sleep, water, food, weight, and badges. Current app layouts may rename, move, or reorganize those categories. The Fitbit Ionic manual is therefore useful historical documentation, not a universal icon dictionary.
Heart-rate symbols and zones
A heart outline commonly opens the heart-rate feature or tile. A filled or pulsing heart may show a current heart-rate reading, while a colored heart can indicate a heart-rate zone during activity. A heart paired with an exercise graphic may represent heart rate during a workout.
Older Fitbit documentation used heart icons to show heart-rate zones. On current devices, the precise graphic and color scheme can differ. A heart icon by itself does not mean that Fitbit has detected an abnormal medical event.

Heart-rate readings are wellness information. Accuracy can vary with fit, skin contact, movement, exercise type, physiology, and device position. If you have concerning symptoms, seek medical care rather than relying on a wearable icon.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFitbit describes Active Zone Minutes on the Charge 6 product page as time spent in target heart-rate zones. That does not make the metric a diagnosis or a substitute for clinical monitoring.
Sleep icons: setting versus health data
A moon, bed, or Z-shaped symbol can refer to several different things:
- Sleep Mode: A device setting that mutes notifications and may dim or suppress the screen.
- Sleep tracking: A health feature that records sleep duration.
- Sleep Score: A summary metric available in the app or on supported devices.
- Sleep stages: Light, deep, REM, and awake periods when supported by the device, account, and software.
That is why “the moon means sleep” is incomplete. Check whether the icon appears among settings, beside a score, or inside a health tile. Automatic sleep tracking and sleep-stage reporting are not available in exactly the same form on every Fitbit. Fitbit’s device documentation describes the general sleep features of older models, but newer interfaces may differ.
Exercise and workout icons
| Icon | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| Running figure | Run. |
| Walking figure | Walk. |
| Bicycle | Cycling or bike workout. |
| Swimmer or wave | Swim. |
| Hiker or mountain | Hike or outdoor activity. |
| Dumbbell or weight | Weights or strength training. |
| Stopwatch | A timed workout or timer function. |
| Location pin or route | GPS-related workout tracking. |
| Pause bars | Workout paused. |
| Square or stop control | End the workout. |
| Circular arrow | Resume, restart, or repeat, depending on the screen. |
Exercise graphics are not standardized across Fitbit generations. Some workouts are started manually; SmartTrack can automatically recognize and record certain activities. A GPS pin may mean the device is searching for a signal, has acquired a signal, is actively recording, or is using the phone’s GPS. Do not infer one state from the pin alone without checking its animation, label, or model guide.

The Charge 6 supports more than 40 exercise modes according to its current product information, but that does not mean every Fitbit offers the same list. Features also vary between built-in GPS and connected GPS models.
GPS and location symbols
A location pin is usually related to GPS or route recording:

- Designed for all-day wear: On-wrist Bluetooth calls, texts and phone notifications[5], customizable clock faces, Amazon Alexa built-in[6], Google Wallet & Maps, 6+ day battery[7]
- Blinking or animated pin: Often indicates that the device is searching for a location signal.
- Solid pin: May indicate an active or acquired GPS connection.
- Crossed-out pin: GPS may be unavailable, disabled, or blocked by permissions.
- Phone-and-location symbol: The Fitbit may be using connected GPS from the paired phone.
These are common interpretations, not universal Fitbit rules. For a workout using GPS, go outdoors with a clear view of the sky, keep the phone nearby if connected GPS is required, verify location permissions, and wait for acquisition before starting. Sync afterward to check whether the route was recorded.
Notification and phone icons
| Graphic | Usually represents |
|---|---|
| Bell | Notifications, reminders, or alarms. |
| Message bubble or envelope | Text, email, or app message. |
| Phone handset | Incoming call or call notification. |
| Calendar | Calendar alert or schedule-related information. |
| Alarm clock | An alarm is set or ringing. |
| Flag, trophy, or reminder mark | A goal, reminder, achievement, or milestone notification. |
These symbols can indicate that a notification is available to read; they do not necessarily mean notifications are enabled for every app. A muted-status icon means alerts are being suppressed, while a crossed-out phone means the Fitbit is not currently connected to the phone. Phone calls, texts, calendar alerts, and app notifications depend on phone compatibility, Bluetooth range, permissions, and the relevant app settings.
Connectivity, sync, and phone features
Bluetooth, phone, cloud, and sync arrows describe different connections:
- Bluetooth or phone icon: Connection to the paired phone.
- Sync arrows: Data is syncing or a sync function is available.
- Cloud: Data or account services are involved, usually through the phone and internet.
- Crossed-out phone: The Fitbit is disconnected from the phone.
- Find My Phone icon: A supported feature for locating the paired phone.
- Wi-Fi or network symbol: Network connectivity on models and features that support it.
Bluetooth is not the same as internet access. A Fitbit can often record activity while away from the phone and sync later, although storage limits and feature-specific behavior vary. A disconnected icon therefore does not automatically mean that your data has been erased.
If the phone-disconnection symbol will not clear, follow this order:
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Place the Fitbit beside the phone.
- Open the Fitbit or Google Health app and start a manual sync.
- Confirm that the correct account is signed in.
- Restart Bluetooth, the phone, and the Fitbit.
- Check app permissions and phone compatibility.
- Install offered app or device updates.
- Only then consider unpairing and pairing again.
For example, Google Store listings describe Charge 6 and Inspire 3 compatibility with most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later, but exact availability can vary by region, phone, account, and feature.

Fitbit app and dashboard icons
Icons in the phone app are tiles and navigation shortcuts, not necessarily warnings from the wearable. Common examples include:

App names and placement can change as Fitbit integrates more closely with Google’s health services. A tile may also be hidden, moved, or unavailable because of the device, account, region, or subscription status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Premium locks, crowns, and stars
A lock, crown, star, or “Premium” badge generally indicates that content or an advanced insight requires a paid subscription. It may refer to workouts, mindfulness content, coaching, personalized recommendations, or certain advanced insights.
It does not mean that all Fitbit tracking is locked. Basic functions such as steps, heart rate, sleep duration, and notifications can remain available without a subscription, while the exact division changes by product, region, and account. Depending on your region and app version, Fitbit Premium features may be labeled Google Health Premium. Check the offer displayed in your own account before subscribing; prices, trials, branding, and included benefits can change.
Other health symbols: oxygen, stress, temperature, and readiness
Icons for blood oxygen, stress, skin temperature, readiness, recovery, ECG, or similar features are particularly model- and region-dependent. A droplet, oxygen-style ring, thermometer, gauge, or recovery symbol may identify one of these features, but the graphic alone is not enough to establish exactly what it measures.
Availability can depend on the Fitbit model, firmware, account, country, regulatory approval, and subscription. Health readings should be treated as wellness information rather than a diagnosis. An oxygen, heart, stress, or temperature icon is not automatically an emergency warning.
Why your icon may look different
- Different model: Inspire and Charge trackers generally expose fewer controls than Versa and Sense watches.
- Different generation: Older Fitbit OS devices use different menus and terminology from newer Google-integrated products.
- Different screen: A clock-face status icon may not mean the same thing as a similar app tile.
- Custom clock face: Third-party clock faces can use their own graphics and abbreviations.
- Software update: Labels, navigation gestures, and icon placement may change.
- Region or account: Features and subscription branding are not identical everywhere.
- Temporary indicator: Some status icons are designed to disappear after a few seconds.
If an icon does not match an image online, do not reset the device simply because the artwork is different. Identify the exact Fitbit model, note the screen where the symbol appears, check whether it is persistent or temporary, and look for a nearby label or percentage. Then consult the model’s official guide, such as the Charge 5 manual or the relevant current Google Health help page.
Quick troubleshooting by icon type
Battery symbol will not disappear
Use the correct charger, reseat the device, clean the contacts, try another power source, and leave it connected if it was fully depleted. If the battery remains critical or the device never responds, use the official model-specific charging instructions before considering a reset.

Phone or Bluetooth symbol remains disconnected
Verify Bluetooth, open the app, bring the devices together, sync manually, restart both devices, check permissions, and update software. Re-pairing should be a later step, not the first response.
Moon symbol remains visible
Open quick settings and check both Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode. If Sleep Mode returns at a particular time, inspect its schedule. Remember that a moon inside a sleep tile may simply identify sleep data rather than an active setting.
GPS symbol never becomes active
Move outdoors, ensure location permissions are allowed, keep the phone nearby for connected GPS, and wait before beginning the workout. Confirm afterward whether a route was saved.
Notification icon appears unexpectedly
Open the notification list and review the phone’s notification permissions. A notification icon is not necessarily an error, and a missing notification may be caused by a muted setting, disconnected phone, unsupported app, or permission restriction.
Heart icon appears unexpectedly
Check whether it is the heart-rate tile, a normal reading, a zone indicator, or a notification setting. The heart graphic alone does not establish an abnormal event. Seek medical advice for symptoms or health concerns.
If you are still unsure
- Identify the exact Fitbit model.
- Record where the icon appears: clock face, quick settings, exercise screen, notification list, or phone app.
- Note whether it is permanent, animated, or visible only briefly.
- Look for text, a percentage, a color, or a nearby label.
- Open quick settings to check device status.
- Compare the result with the official guide for your model rather than a generic icon chart.
The key distinction is context. A moon can be Sleep Mode or sleep data; a heart can be a metric or a zone indicator; a phone can show connection status or a call notification; and a battery can show ordinary level, charging, full charge, or critical depletion. Once you identify the screen and model, the symbol is usually much easier to interpret.
