The sources available do not establish that Rolex gave Sir Edmund Hillary a watch after he climbed Everest. Rolex says the 1953 British expedition was equipped with Oyster Perpetual watches and that the Explorer launched later that year, following the ascent. Phillips describes one expedition-associated watch as equipment returned to Rolex for testing—not as a personal gift. That account does not rule out a separate gift, but it does not verify one.
What is known about the watches on the 1953 Everest expedition?
Rolex says the British expedition led by Sir John Hunt, with Hillary and Tenzing Norgay among its members, was equipped with Oyster Perpetual watches. Rolex dates Hillary and Tenzing’s summit to 29 May 1953. The company’s history connects the expedition to the Explorer’s launch later in 1953, but it does not say Hillary was personally given an Explorer.
Rolex reproduces Hunt’s favorable assessment of the watches: “Rolex Oyster watches […] performed splendidly, and we have indeed come to look upon [them] as an important part of high-climbing equipment.” This is Hunt’s report as presented by Rolex, not evidence of a personal gift to Hillary. See Rolex’s Explorer history and its exploration history.
What does the reference 6098 account say?
A Phillips auction description identifies a steel Rolex reference 6098 with the 1953 expedition. Phillips says the watch was supplied for use during the expedition and then returned to Rolex for extensive testing. Its description explicitly distinguishes that arrangement from a gift. This is an auction-house account of the watch’s provenance, not a definitive Rolex archival record, so it should be attributed to Phillips rather than treated as settled proof of every detail of the expedition’s watch allocation. Why the Raymond Lambert watch is a different story
Phillips also describes a Rolex reference 6298 engraved in connection with the 1952 Swiss Everest expedition and associated with Swiss climber Raymond Lambert. According to that auction description, Rolex later gifted that watch to Lambert. It concerns a different climber and an expedition a year earlier; it is not evidence that Hillary received a watch after the 1953 ascent. Phillips’ Raymond Lambert lot description.

Was the Explorer the watch Hillary wore at the summit?
The sources establish an expedition supply of Oyster Perpetual watches and a subsequent 1953 Explorer launch. They do not establish which specific watch Hillary wore at the summit, nor do they verify that he received an Explorer as a post-climb gift. Rolex’s historical association between the ascent and the Explorer is not, by itself, proof of either claim. The Explorer is a current Rolex model; its present-day status should not be confused with the provenance of an individual 1953 expedition watch. Rolex’s current Explorer page.
