For a straightforward build, use a microcontroller, small display, timekeeping source, buttons and a suitable power system. The best route depends on the features you want and whether the parts can fit your case—not on a single universal parts list.
Choose the kind of watch you want to build
Decide first whether you want a clock that keeps time locally or a connected device with features such as network-synchronized time and multiple screens. A basic clock has a smaller scope; Wi-Fi, weather displays and other functions add software and power considerations. The examples below are distinct documented projects, not interchangeable component lists.
| Build route | Documented hardware and capabilities | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Discrete Arduino build | Arduino Pro Mini 3V, 0.91-inch I2C OLED at 128×32, 500 mAh LiPo, TP4056 charger module, tactile buttons and DS3231 RTC. The project guide also lists a multimeter and soldering kit. Project guide | Case fit, voltage and interface compatibility, charging requirements, and how much wiring and soldering you are prepared to do. |
| Microcontroller with expansion board | XIAO ESP32C3 with an expansion board that includes an OLED, RTC, SD card slot, buzzer and integrated Li-ion charging circuit. The project uses the OLED and RTC over I2C. Project guide | Board dimensions, connector placement and whether the built-in peripherals are useful for your design. |
| ESP32 smartwatch-style interface | NULA Mini ESP32-C6, 0.96-inch 128×64 SSD1306 OLED, momentary button and USB-C for power and programming. A small LiPo battery and charger are optional for wearable use. The repository describes clock, weather and timer screens, with NTP synchronization. Project repository | Whether Wi-Fi is worth the added scope, how the chosen board will be powered as a wearable, and which screens you actually need. |
| Integrated watch kit | T-Watch Standard documentation describes an ESP32 core PCB and backplane, 1.54-inch LCD touch screen, and a kit configuration that includes a lithium battery. T-Watch documentation | Whether the kit is currently available and supported, and whether its firmware and enclosure suit your goals. |
Plan the display, board and enclosure together
Display size and resolution affect what you can show, while the board’s dimensions and connectors affect how everything fits. The documented examples include a 0.91-inch 128×32 OLED and a 0.96-inch 128×64 OLED; do not assume one display is a drop-in replacement for another.
- Check the display’s physical dimensions, resolution and bus against the exact board and firmware you plan to use.
- Measure the board, battery, display and connectors against the case interior, including clearance for buttons and charging access.
- Confirm the board’s logic voltage and the display module’s requirements from their product documentation.
- For a discrete build, plan wiring and solder joints as well as the final component layout.
A case drawing or mock-up can expose fit problems before you commit to assembly. The cited projects establish example parts, not a universal watch layout.

Match the battery and charging hardware
Treat the battery and charger as one compatibility decision. The Arduino example lists a 500 mAh LiPo and a TP4056 charger module, while the XIAO ESP32C3 expansion board is described as having integrated Li-ion charging. Those approaches are specific to their respective projects, not proof that the parts can be mixed safely.
- Check the battery’s connector and polarity against the board or charger.
- Verify charger requirements and battery compatibility in the hardware maker’s documentation.
- Confirm that the battery physically fits and that the enclosure leaves room for the display, board and wiring.
- Do not infer runtime from capacity or a project’s feature list. No comparable, independently supported battery-life measurements are established for these builds.
For a wearable design, use the selected hardware’s current specifications rather than assuming that a charger module, battery and development board are compatible because they appear in different project guides.

Choose how the watch keeps time
Use an RTC for a locally running clock
The Arduino example uses a DS3231 real-time clock module and an RTC library. This gives the design a dedicated timekeeping component; the cited description does not quantify accuracy, backup behavior or power use for a finished watch.
Use network time for a connected design
The ESP32-C6 project describes NTP synchronization over Wi-Fi and includes a clock screen. Network synchronization requires connectivity, so it is a different design choice from using a separate RTC. The project description does not establish a comparative accuracy or power advantage.

Assemble and program the watch
- Set the feature scope. Decide whether you need only a clock or also screens such as weather and timer. The ESP32-C6 project describes HOME, CLOCK, WEATHER and TIMER screens with a single-button interaction pattern; this is an example software scope, not an evaluation of usability or battery performance. Project repository
- Select one documented hardware route. Choose the discrete Arduino, the XIAO expansion-board approach, an ESP32-C6 design, or an integrated kit. Avoid combining parts from separate examples without checking their specifications.
- Check compatibility before buying or soldering. Verify voltage, display bus, board and case dimensions, battery connector and polarity, and charging requirements using the documentation for the exact parts.
- Build and test the electronics before enclosing them. Connect the display, timekeeping hardware and button inputs according to the selected project’s wiring and code. Confirm that the display and controls work before fitting the parts into a case.
- Load the firmware for that route. The ESP32-C6 project describes setup with the Arduino IDE, the ESP32 core and Adafruit display libraries. Follow its repository instructions for the exact board and software dependencies rather than applying them to a different project.
- Test the completed configuration. Check time display, button behavior, charging and enclosure fit on the exact hardware you intend to wear. Do not treat a feature list as proof of runtime, water resistance or long-term reliability.
Source parts without guessing compatibility
Useful search terms for the documented component classes include “0.96 inch SSD1306 OLED display I2C” and “DS3231 RTC module.” These names identify examples, not guaranteed matches for every board. Check the exact module’s interface, voltage and dimensions before ordering. Tactile buttons and soldering equipment are also listed in the discrete Arduino project. Arduino project guide ESP32-C6 project repository
An integrated kit may reduce the number of separate modules to source, while a discrete build offers more choice over components. The available project descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of cost, reliability or build time. Kit documentation and product listings establish that these products exist, but do not establish current stock or support status.

What the project examples do not establish
The cited guides, repository and product documentation describe possible architectures and listed components. They do not establish a tested total build cost, expected runtime, water resistance, long-term reliability or a controlled comparison between approaches. Those outcomes depend on the exact hardware, firmware, enclosure and use; measure or verify them for your own build rather than assuming a result from the parts list.
