Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Watch FE on June 13, 2024, ending months of speculation about its first Fan Edition smartwatch. The 40mm watch launched as a lower-cost route into Samsung’s Wear OS and health ecosystem, but its core hardware is much closer to the Galaxy Watch4 generation than to newer Galaxy Watch models. In the U.S., the Bluetooth version went on sale June 24, 2024, at a launch MSRP of $199.99; LTE was listed at $249.99. Samsung’s March 2025 U.S. price list later marked both FE models end-of-life, so those figures are historical MSRPs, not guaranteed 2026 prices.
What Samsung actually announced
The Galaxy Watch FE was Samsung’s first Galaxy Watch to use the “Fan Edition” name. It is a 40mm aluminum smartwatch available in Bluetooth and LTE versions, with Black, Pink Gold and Silver color options. Samsung also introduced redesigned bands with blue and orange stitching, one-click band changes and sapphire crystal glass.
The announcement was on June 13, 2024; retail dates varied by market. That distinction matters: June 24 was the U.S. Bluetooth availability date, not a universal global launch date.
Release dates, prices and availability

Samsung’s regional specification sheets are not identical. The U.S. sheet lists Bluetooth 5.0, MIL-STD-810G, 25.9g weight and Android 6.0-or-later compatibility. Samsung’s global sheet lists Bluetooth 5.3, MIL-STD-810H, 26.6g and Android 11-or-later. Treat those as regional or model-documentation differences rather than combining them into one universal specification.
Health and fitness features
The FE uses Samsung’s BioActive Sensor and supports a broad feature list:
- Sleep-pattern monitoring and sleep coaching.
- Sleep-environment tools through Samsung Clock and SmartThings.
- High- and low-heart-rate alerts and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN).
- ECG and, where approved, blood-pressure measurements.
- Body Composition measurements.
- More than 100 workout modes, advanced running analysis and personalized heart-rate zones.
Sleep coaching requires at least seven days of sleep data, including two days off. Blood-pressure measurement, where available, requires calibration with a traditional cuff every four weeks. ECG, IHRN, blood pressure and sleep-apnea functions depend on regulatory approval, country, software, carrier and paired phone. Samsung describes these as wellness and health-monitoring tools, not diagnosis or treatment.

Phone compatibility: Android yes, iPhone no
The Galaxy Watch FE requires an Android phone with Google Play services and does not work with iPhone. Samsung’s current support documentation lists the FE among its Wear OS watches that are incompatible with iOS. Non-Samsung Android phones can pair with it, but Samsung-created features may have limited support, and Samsung Wallet functions can be restricted to Samsung smartphones.
Samsung’s launch announcement cited Android 6.0 or later with more than 1.5GB of phone memory, while later support documentation lists Android 10 or later. For a current purchase, check the compatibility list for your exact phone and market at Samsung Support. LTE also requires compatible carrier service, eSIM activation and the correct regional model.

Is it really a new watch?
It is a new product name and package, but not a new-generation hardware platform. The Exynos W920, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 247mAh battery, 40mm case and 1.2-inch display place the FE much closer to the Galaxy Watch4 generation than to the Galaxy Watch6 or Watch7. That does not prove it is literally a Watch4 rebrand; it does show where Samsung made the savings.
The meaningful additions are sapphire crystal protection, refreshed styling, current Wear OS integration and access to Samsung Health features. A newer processor, larger display, larger battery or longer practical hardware life requires moving up to a newer Galaxy Watch.

Samsung began rolling out One UI 6 Watch on November 19, 2024, including the Galaxy Watch FE. The update introduced features such as Energy Score, expanded sleep metrics, selected sleep-apnea functionality, Race, Workout Routine and new watch faces. The announcement described the start of a rollout, not simultaneous availability everywhere; support varies by market, carrier, model and paired phone. Software updates do not change the FE’s processor, battery capacity, display size or charging system. Details are in Samsung’s rollout announcement at Samsung Mobile Press.

Who should buy the Galaxy Watch FE?
It makes sense for
- Android users wanting the lowest-cost entry into Samsung’s Wear OS ecosystem.
- Galaxy phone owners who value Samsung Health, Wallet, Camera Controller and other ecosystem features.
- Buyers who specifically prefer a compact 40mm watch.
- Anyone finding genuine remaining-stock or refurbished inventory well below the original $199.99 Bluetooth MSRP.
- Users who value sapphire glass more than maximum performance or battery capacity.
It is a poor fit for
- iPhone owners, because iOS pairing is unsupported.
- People who need long battery life, a 44mm display or a larger battery.
- Buyers seeking the newest processor, sensors or more RAM.
- Anyone assuming every ECG, blood-pressure, IHRN or sleep-apnea function works in every country.
- Shoppers paying near launch MSRP when a newer Galaxy Watch is similarly discounted.
- Divers or users exposed to high-pressure water.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Option | Why consider it | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch FE | Lowest-cost Samsung Wear OS entry; sapphire crystal; compact 40mm case | Old W920 platform, 247mAh battery and one size |
| Galaxy Watch7 or current generation | Newer processor and hardware with better long-term prospects | Higher price; compare actual discounts rather than historical MSRP |
| Galaxy Fit3 | Cheaper fitness tracking and much longer battery life | Not a Wear OS smartwatch; no Google Play apps, LTE or FE-level health ecosystem |
| Refurbished Galaxy Watch5 or Watch6 | Potentially newer hardware for similar money | Battery wear, uncertain water resistance and shorter or unclear warranty |
Independent 2026 buying guidance also flags the FE’s older processor, smaller battery and smaller display as value concerns: Android Central’s Samsung smartwatch guide. Check seller reputation, return terms, battery condition, warranty and LTE carrier compatibility before choosing refurbished stock.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch FE is a legitimate Samsung launch, not just a rumor, but its value depends heavily on price and compatibility. It offers sapphire glass, Samsung’s health platform and Wear OS access in a compact case, while carrying hardware rooted in the Galaxy Watch4 era. At a substantial discount it can be a sensible first Samsung smartwatch for an Android user. At or near its original MSRP—or when a newer Galaxy Watch is close in price—the FE’s older processor, small battery and limited size make it the weaker buy.
