Christopher Ward is a British-founded, online-first watch brand whose watches are designed in England and hand-built in Switzerland. Founded in 2004, it is best known for the C60 Trident dive-watch family, the everyday C63 Sealander, integrated-bracelet The Twelve, and technically ambitious pieces such as the chiming C1 Bel Canto. Its direct-sales model, Swiss production and five-year movement guarantee make it a serious value contender, but the right model depends on your size, complication and water-use requirements.

What is Christopher Ward?

Christopher Ward was founded in 2004 by Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis. The brand’s documented identity combines English design with Swiss watchmaking and direct online sales. A Christopher Ward brochure describes it as the world’s first online premium watch brand and says: “Every Christopher Ward watch brings English design together with Swiss watchmaking expertise.”

The company sells primarily through its own website rather than a traditional network of luxury-watch boutiques. That keeps the buying process comparatively direct, but prices, stock, taxes and delivery terms still depend on your country and the exact reference.

Where are Christopher Ward watches made?

Christopher Ward’s 2022 brand brochure states: “Every watch is hand built in Switzerland.” The design identity is English, while assembly and watchmaking are Swiss. The brochure also records the brand’s Swiss connection with Synergies Horlogères in 2008.

That description does not mean every component is manufactured in one building or that every movement is made entirely in-house. Christopher Ward uses Swiss mechanical movements from suppliers such as Sellita in many models, while its SH21 calibre represents the brand’s own movement-development effort.

C60 Trident: the dive-watch signature

The C60 Trident launched in 2009 and remains Christopher Ward’s defining sports-watch family. Current catalogues include Trident references such as the C60 Trident Biscay and Biscay GMT.

C63 Sealander: everyday wear and GMT travel

The C63 Sealander is the brand’s everyday automatic and GMT family. A documented C63 Sealander GMT specification lists a 39 mm case, Sellita SW330-2 COSC automatic movement, 56-hour power reserve and 15 ATM water resistance. A GMT can track an additional time zone, making this family more useful for travel than a standard three-hand model.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police 150th-anniversary edition shows how the platform can be customised: it was limited to 150 pieces and paired the 39 mm case and SW330-2 COSC movement with an RCMP-colour rubber strap, bracelet and personalised engraving.

The Twelve: integrated-bracelet sport luxury

The Twelve is Christopher Ward’s sport-luxury line with an integrated bracelet design. The official US catalogue lists a 40 mm automatic version at $1,495. Compare dial texture, colour, bracelet fit and movement specification rather than assuming every Twelve reference is identical.

C1 Bel Canto and Atelier: complications and high-concept designs

The C1 Bel Canto is the collection’s most recognisable complication, using a chiming mechanism. An independent catalogue reports that it won the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Petite Aiguille. The Atelier and related high-complication pieces sit above the core sports and everyday ranges in technical ambition and price.

Other families

Christopher Ward’s official and catalogue materials also identify moonphase, field and adventure, dress, motorsport and textured-dial lines. These families are useful starting points when you want a specific style rather than a particular complication.

Are Christopher Ward watches good value?

They can be, particularly if you value Swiss assembly, mechanical specifications and direct online pricing more than a large boutique network or a prestigious legacy name. The value case is strongest when you compare like with like: movement grade, certification, case and bracelet quality, water resistance, complication and after-sales terms.

  • Why the value proposition is attractive: direct sales, Swiss hand-built production, competitive pricing in the core collections and a five-year movement guarantee advertised by the brand.
  • What to examine carefully: the exact reference’s dimensions, clasp and bracelet adjustment, movement grade, water resistance, return conditions in your country and the cost of shipping or taxes.
  • What the price does not tell you: a higher-priced Bel Canto reflects its chiming complication and construction, while a lower-priced automatic such as The Twelve is aimed at everyday sport-luxury wear. They are not substitutes simply because both are mechanical watches.

Is the C60 Trident a good dive watch?

The C60 Trident is a credible dive-watch platform and Christopher Ward’s longest-running signature sports family. Whether a particular reference is right for serious diving depends on that model’s stated water resistance, bezel, crown, lume, strap or bracelet and movement specification.

For recreational swimming and everyday water exposure, use the published rating for your exact reference and keep the crown fully secured. For actual diving, choose a reference whose rating and construction match your planned depth and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance. Do not infer a model’s rating from the C60 name alone, because the family includes different sizes, GMT versions and materials.

Which Christopher Ward should you buy?

Choose the C60 Trident if you want

  • A purpose-built dive-watch look and rotating bezel.
  • A sports watch that can handle water when the chosen reference’s rating suits your use.
  • The brand’s signature design language.

Choose the C63 Sealander if you want

  • A versatile daily watch that works with office and casual clothing.
  • A 39 mm GMT option with a documented 56-hour reserve and 15 ATM rating.
  • A less overtly dive-focused profile.

Choose The Twelve if you want

  • An integrated-bracelet sport-luxury design.
  • A modern, bracelet-led watch rather than a rotating-bezel tool watch.
  • A 40 mm automatic configuration in the listed US example.

Choose the Bel Canto or Atelier if you want

  • A conversation-piece complication rather than a simple daily beater.
  • Chiming or other technically ambitious construction.
  • A higher budget and a more specialised ownership experience.

Warranty, returns and buying considerations

The official site advertises a five-year movement guarantee and 60-day free returns. These are headline policies, not a substitute for reading the terms: eligibility, exclusions, return shipping, taxes and regional consumer rights can differ by delivery country and exact reference.

  1. Confirm the reference number, case size, movement and water-resistance rating on the product page.
  2. Check the price in your delivery market, including any applicable tax, duty or shipping charge.
  3. Read the warranty and return conditions that apply to your country.
  4. Keep the invoice, packaging and removed links or accessories until you are certain the fit and specification are right.
  5. Use an authorised service route and observe any stated water-resistance testing interval.

Automatic-watch ownership: winders, straps and insurance

An automatic Christopher Ward does not need a watch winder for normal ownership. A winder is an optional convenience if you want the watch running while it is stored; leaving it stopped and resetting it when worn is also normal.

Many Christopher Ward straps use quick-release hardware. A spring-bar tool can still be useful, but check the lug width and end-link or strap compatibility before forcing a bar or fitting a third-party strap.

For a limited edition or a higher-value complication, consider watch insurance or valuables coverage. Confirm that the policy covers the country where you live, the watch’s full replacement value and loss outside the home, rather than assuming a standard contents policy is sufficient.

What makes the brand distinctive?

Christopher Ward occupies an unusual middle ground: it has a British-founded identity and direct-to-consumer distribution, but its watches are hand-built in Switzerland and its catalogue ranges from accessible automatics to award-winning complications. The C60 Trident gives the brand a recognisable dive-watch anchor, while the C63 Sealander and The Twelve cover everyday and sport-luxury use. The SH21 and Bel Canto show that the company also invests in movement development and complications beyond straightforward timekeeping.
