The F.P. Journe Chronomètre Optimum is built around a specific technical idea: regulate how energy reaches the escapement, then make that mechanism visible. Its manually wound Calibre 1510 combines two parallel mainspring barrels, a one-second constant-force remontoire and a two-wheel, direct-impulse bi-axial escapement. The watch’s seconds displays reinforce the theme: small seconds appear on the dial, while a natural dead-beat seconds display is visible through the case back.
Fratello’s Brandon Baines reported on the watch after Rob and Lex encountered it at Geneva Watch Days. The technical explanations and performance figures below are manufacturer specifications or claims unless noted otherwise; they are not independent accuracy-test results.
What makes the F.P. Journe Chronomètre Optimum different?
Calibre 1510 is the defining feature. Rather than treating its paired barrels as a simple way to increase running time, F.P. Journe says they are arranged in parallel to stabilize the force delivered to the gear train. A remontoire then renews that delivery once per second, while the EBHP escapement is designed to receive direct impulses without lubricant. Together, these elements express François-Paul Journe’s stated aim of reducing friction and maintaining constant force at the escapement.
That is the maker’s design rationale, not proof of a measured accuracy advantage. The sources available for this watch report no independent accuracy test or named formal chronometer certification. F.P. Journe’s description of “near perfect accuracy” should therefore be read as a manufacturer claim.

What is Calibre 1510?
Calibre 1510 is a manually wound movement specified by F.P. Journe as being made in 18K rose gold. Its published power reserve is 70 ± 2 hours. The following are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified measurements:
| Specification | F.P. Journe figure |
|---|---|
| Winding | Manual; 27 turns of the crown |
| Movement diameter | 34 mm |
| Movement height | 5.8 mm |
| Frequency | 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) |
| Jewels | 44 |
| Parts | 240 without the dial; 264 when cased with strap |
| Power reserve | 70 ± 2 hours |
Fratello’s Brandon Baines described the calibre as the result of 11 years of development in his September 6, 2021 review. That is secondary reporting, not a manufacturer specification for a service interval or performance result.
How does the Chronomètre Optimum remontoire work?
Parallel barrels steady the delivery
The two mainspring barrels run in parallel. F.P. Journe says this arrangement stabilizes the force acting on the gear train and reduces lateral pressure on the great wheel. It is different from placing barrels in series to extend the power reserve: the maker presents the paired barrels as a way to manage energy delivery, not simply to make the watch run longer.
A one-second remontoire refreshes the force
At about 11 o’clock on the dial, the visible remontoire operates once per second. According to François-Paul Journe’s testimony on the official product page, it maintains constant amplitude for the first 45 hours of the power reserve. Fratello’s 2021 review likewise describes the remontoire as acting once per second over that first 45-hour interval. These are descriptions of the mechanism and its intended effect, not independently published amplitude measurements.

What is the EBHP escapement?
F.P. Journe describes the EBHP as a two-wheel, direct-impulse bi-axial escapement with titanium components and no lubricant. The design is intended to deliver impulses directly while avoiding lubrication at the escapement. In the maker’s account, its geometry also helps it self-start and remain stable as the watch moves on the wearer’s wrist; that explanation is not a quantified accuracy claim.
François-Paul Journe summarized the design premise this way: “The basic premise was to make a watch with less internal friction, a constant force on the escapement to ensure isochronism and an escapement without lubrication to ensure stability.” Isochronism is the consistency of a watch’s rate as its mainspring unwinds; the quotation explains the goal, but does not establish a test result.
How are the dial and movement laid out?
The dial distributes the indications around the visible mechanism: offset hours and minutes sit at 3 o’clock, small seconds at 9, power reserve at 6, and the remontoire at 11. The sapphire case back reveals the rose-gold movement and a large natural dead-beat seconds display. This rear indication is distinct from the small seconds on the dial.

That eligibility condition applies to Black Label, not automatically to every Classique version. Check with the brand for current availability and terms.
Why was the Chronomètre Optimum developed?
François-Paul Journe says he designed the Chronomètre Optimum in 2001, adding: “It was the first time that I integrated the dead beat second into my constant-force remontoire.” He says the design did not enter production then because his attention was occupied by the Calibre Octa and other models. His account connects the dead-beat seconds display to the broader effort to control energy and friction rather than presenting it as a separate decorative complication.
The available reporting does not establish a current price, stock status, independent accuracy figure or formal chronometer certification for this specific watch. Those points should be confirmed with F.P. Journe or an authorized boutique rather than inferred from the technical specifications.
