The Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT Compass pairs a second-time-zone display with a solar-compass method, using the same central 24-hour hand for both. It is a limited edition of 500 in a 42 mm steel case. Compass use is a mode change, not an additional directional reading alongside GMT: set the hand to local solar time and point it toward the Sun, and it stops showing a second time zone.
How the BR-03 GMT Compass works
The key to this watch is its red-and-white twin-arrow central GMT hand. In GMT mode, it indicates a second 24-hour time zone, independently adjustable from the local-time display. In solar-compass mode, that same hand becomes a reference for finding direction from the Sun. Bell & Ross explains both modes in its product instructions.
Using it as a solar compass
- Set the GMT hand to local solar time, not official clock time. The manufacturer’s instruction is: “Set the GMT hand to the local solar time (not the official time).”
- Lay the watch flat and parallel to the ground.
- Point the GMT hand toward the Sun, then read direction using the dial’s graduated compass scale and cardinal points.
This is a solar compass, not a magnetic compass. The GMT hand cannot show a second time zone and provide a directional reference at the same time: when it is set for solar-compass use, it no longer functions as a GMT hand. Bell & Ross describes the intended method, but no independent compass-accuracy test is established here; treat it as an instrument-inspired aid, not a replacement for a dedicated navigation instrument.
Case, dial and specifications
Bell & Ross gives the BR-03 GMT Compass a 42 mm square steel case, 12.3 mm thick, with satin-finished and polished surfaces. The black dial is framed by a flange marked with cardinal points and a graduated compass scale. A bidirectional bezel has a 24-hour scale and a blue-and-black anodized aluminum insert; Bell & Ross says the colors correspond to daytime and nighttime hours. The crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating, and the stated water resistance is 100 m.
