Girard-Perregaux’s La Esmeralda Tourbillon “A Secret” Eternity Edition is a modern wristwatch inspired by the brand’s prize-winning 1889 La Esmeralda pocket watch—not a replica. Its defining link to that history is the Three Gold Bridges layout, joined by hand-engraved horses and a concealed caseback motif. The US catalog pages examined list pink-gold versions at $469,000 and a white-gold version at $506,000; each cited colourway is limited to 18 pieces.
How the wristwatch connects to the 1889 La Esmeralda
Girard-Perregaux presents the Eternity Edition as a contemporary interpretation of Constant Girard’s La Esmeralda pocket watch, which the manufacturer says was shown at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition and awarded a gold medal. The brand is explicit that the new watch is not a facsimile, describing it instead as a homage to the earlier prize-winning watch. Girard-Perregaux’s pink-gold product page and its white-gold product page provide that framing.
The historical design cue is the Three Gold Bridges architecture: three bridges span the modern dial, making the movement structure part of the watch’s face. The horse imagery adds another thread. Girard-Perregaux says hand-engraved galloping horses form the ends of the barrel bridge and tourbillon bridge; three more horses appear on the reverse secret cover. The maker refers to the horses’ origin as an “equine mystery,” a piece of brand language rather than a settled historical explanation.
What makes the “secret” caseback distinctive
The reverse is designed to conceal as well as reveal. A cover over the rear sapphire crystal carries a horse motif, so the movement can be viewed when the cover is opened and hidden when it is closed. The exact cover treatment depends on the reference: Girard-Perregaux describes a honey-colour enamelled cover on the honey version and a green enamelled secret cover on the cited green pink-gold version.

That hidden motif echoes the horses on the 1889 pocket watch’s caseback, while the engraved horses on the modern bridges bring the same subject to the front of the design. The result is a visual conversation between dial, movement and caseback, rather than a literal reproduction of the original pocket watch.

Movement and case specifications
The cited pink-gold references use the self-winding mechanical calibre GP09600 or a listed GP09600-2083 variant. Girard-Perregaux’s cited listings report 323 parts, 31 jewels and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz. The Hong Kong manufacturer listing for the white-gold model reports a minimum 50-hour power reserve; that figure is specific to that regional page, as it was not present on the examined US white-gold listing.

The listed case measures 43 mm across and 15.1 mm thick, with 30 m water resistance. Case metal and enamel colour vary by reference. A 30 m rating is not a basis for treating this high-complication watch as suitable for swimming.
Engraving, enamel and the maker’s craft-time figures
The case is made in pink or white gold and combines hand engraving with grand feu enamel. The honey reference pairs honey-toned enamel with a sunray motif; its product page describes a honey-colour enamelled cover over the rear sapphire crystal. Those colour and cover details belong to the cited reference and should not be assumed to apply to every version.

Girard-Perregaux says each bridge takes 40 hours to finish, and that the specified engraving on the barrel bridge and tourbillon requires another 50 hours. These are the manufacturer’s published craft-time figures, not independently measured production times.
