The choice is chiefly about material and edition: SLGW003 is Brilliant Hard Titanium and a mainstay Evolution 9 model; SLGW002 is 18k rose gold and launched as an 80-piece limited edition.
What the SLGW003 and SLGW002 have in common
Both watches belong to Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection and use the manual-winding Caliber 9SA4. Grand Seiko lists a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (10 beats per second), 47 jewels, and an approximately 80-hour power reserve. Its published mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day; these are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent test. Grand Seiko’s April 2024 announcement gives the launch specifications.
The cases measure 38.6 mm in diameter and 9.95 mm thick. The launch announcement also specifies 3-bar water resistance, a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, and a see-through case back. Those shared dimensions and mechanics make the case material, rather than the movement, the clearest distinction between the two references.

The euro prices are historical European recommended retail prices stated in the April 2024 announcement, not current or universal prices. In Japan, Seiko Watch Corporation announced a launch price of ¥1,452,000 including tax for SLGW003. That is a separate market’s launch figure, not a conversion of the European price. The announcement says prices and specifications were current as of publication and subject to change. The Japanese announcement provides the Japan-specific figure.

Caliber 9SA4 and the hand-wound design
Grand Seiko describes the 9SA4 as its first new hand-wound high-beat movement in more than 50 years. The brand says it is based on Caliber 9SA5 and optimized for manual winding; this is Grand Seiko’s account of the movement’s development. Its Caliber 9SA4 manufacture article discusses that design direction.
The dial pattern takes its cue from birch bark. Grand Seiko’s Japanese launch material connects the motif to white birch in Iwate Prefecture, near the manufacture. On the face, the brand points to the minute markings, three-dimensional hands, and multifaceted indexes as legibility features. The design pairs a textured natural reference with a more formal, hand-wound Evolution 9 presentation.

Which Birch Bark model makes more sense?
Choose SLGW003 if titanium and a mainstay model appeal
SLGW003 is the titanium option and launched as a mainstay Evolution 9 model. Grand Seiko’s launch positioning listed availability through boutiques and select retail partners. Its official SLGW003 model page identifies the reference.
Choose SLGW002 if you want the rose-gold limited edition
SLGW002 uses 18k rose gold and was limited to 80 pieces at launch, with availability described through Grand Seiko Boutiques and Salons.
