Fitbit users reported missing steps, incorrect distance, and sync or pairing failures in 2024, but the evidence does not point to one cause. The clearest app-specific finding came in October, when Fitbit Customer Care said an Android app bug caused syncing and pairing problems and could leave steps and distance missing; it recommended app version 4.28.1. Separate incidents involved Fitbit service latency in April and new or renewed Fitbit app pairing with Pixel Watch in June.
Fitbit did not disclose the October bug’s engineering cause, how many users it affected, or a complete fix rate. A missing app total therefore does not by itself prove that a wearable failed to count activity—or that the data is recoverable.
What happened, and when?
The incidents had different scopes. The Google Health Status Dashboard documented the April service incident and June Pixel Watch pairing incident. Fitbit Customer Care directly attributed the October Android sync and pairing problems to an app bug.
| Date | Incident | What the evidence says |
|---|---|---|
| April 7–11, 2024 (US/Pacific) | Intermittent Fitbit service latency | The Google Health Status Dashboard listed effects on Web API, mobile-app functions, and device sync or pairing. It said the root cause was discovered and mitigated. The dashboard’s event rows include an April 8 public report and an April 14 mitigation update despite the listed incident interval ending April 11. |
| June 4–5, 2024 (US/Pacific) | Fitbit app pairing with Pixel Watch | The dashboard said users could not newly pair or re-pair. Already-paired Pixel Watch users were not affected. |
| October 2024 | Android Fitbit app sync and pairing bug | Fitbit Customer Care said a recent app update addressed an Android bug causing sync and pairing issues, with missing activity data such as steps and distance. It recommended app version 4.28.1. |
| October 29, 2024 | Android app version 4.28.2 | A Fitbit moderator listed “Bug fixes and performance improvements.” The generic note does not identify the sync defect or establish that every affected user was fixed. |
What caused the missing steps and sync failures?
For the October reports, Fitbit Customer Care linked missing steps and distance to an Android app bug that caused syncing and pairing problems. The available evidence does not disclose the underlying code-level cause or establish how widespread the bug was.

- COMPLETE ALL-IN-ONE-BUNDLE: Includes Fitbit Charge 6 Black/Obsidian, rapid USB charger, and a premium microfiber cleaning cloth, – everything you need to start tracking in style.
The April service-latency incident was separate: the status dashboard described intermittent disruption to some Web API and mobile-app functions. The June incident was narrower still, affecting new or renewed pairing with Pixel Watch, not users whose watches were already paired. These incidents should not be combined into a single explanation.
A missing total in the app can reflect a transfer or display problem rather than a failure to record activity on the wearable. Check what the device itself shows, but do not assume that all absent data can be recovered.

Why might distance be wrong when steps appear?
Distance can depend on how an activity is recorded. Current Google GPS guidance identifies GPS mode, location permissions, phone proximity for phone-GPS devices, and signal conditions as relevant diagnostic factors. GPS lock can take longer in wooded areas or among tall buildings, and a lost signal may prevent a route map from appearing. These are possible GPS-related issues, not proof of what caused the separate October Android app bug.
If steps appear but distance does not, first determine whether the activity used GPS and whether location access and the required phone connection were available. If both steps and distance are missing from the app, consider sync or pairing problems as well.

How to troubleshoot a Fitbit that will not sync
For current troubleshooting, Google Health’s Android guidance recommends checking connectivity, charging the tracker, manually syncing, restarting the phone and tracker, updating software, and addressing other nearby Fitbit pairings. Menu names can differ from those in the 2024 Fitbit app.
- Check Bluetooth and internet connectivity, and make sure the tracker has charge.
- Open the current health app and manually pull to sync with the tracker nearby.
- Restart the phone and tracker, then try syncing again.
- Update the phone, app, and tracker software if updates are available.
- Check whether another nearby phone or tablet has a Fitbit device paired to the same account; remove competing pairings if needed.
- Reinstall the app only after trying the earlier steps. Reinstallation is a later troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
If the problem is specifically the October 2024 Android app issue, Fitbit Customer Care’s historical response recommended version 4.28.1 and gave these steps: remove the tracker in the app, forget Fitbit devices in Android Bluetooth settings, restart the phone, add the tracker again, and manually sync. This was advice for that historical incident, not a recommendation to seek that old app version now, and it was not a guaranteed fix.

What Fitbit’s statements do—and do not—confirm
Fitbit Customer Care wrote on October 28, 2024: “We wanted to inform you about a recent update to the Fitbit app that addresses a bug causing syncing and pairing issues on Android devices.” Its response connected the issue with missing activity data such as steps and distance and recommended version 4.28.1.
The Fitbit moderator’s October 29 release announcement for version 4.28.2 used the generic note “Bug fixes and performance improvements.” It did not name the sync defect or give a success rate. Neither statement establishes that every user was affected or that every case was resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was the main Fitbit app bug in 2024?
In October, Fitbit Customer Care said an Android app bug caused syncing and pairing problems and could leave steps and distance missing. It recommended version 4.28.1 but did not disclose the engineering cause or the proportion of users affected.
Did one bug cause all Fitbit problems in 2024?
No. The evidence distinguishes April service latency, a June issue with new or renewed Fitbit app pairing on Pixel Watch, and the October Android app bug. They had different timing and scope.
Did Fitbit app version 4.28.2 fix the problem for everyone?
The moderator’s release note said only “Bug fixes and performance improvements.” The available evidence does not establish a universal fix or provide a measured success rate.
Does missing data in the app mean my Fitbit did not count my steps?
Not necessarily. The October issue involved app syncing and pairing, so a discrepancy could occur between the wearable and app. Check the device and try syncing, but do not assume missing data is recoverable without evidence.
Why can steps appear while distance is missing?
Distance may depend on GPS capture and related conditions, including location permissions, phone proximity for phone-GPS devices, and signal. Those possibilities do not establish the cause of every 2024 distance complaint.
