A Fitbit Charge 5 that works reliably and still holds enough charge can remain useful for everyday activity, sleep, heart-rate, stress, and GPS tracking. Whether to keep or replace yours depends on its battery condition, whether its features still meet your needs, and how much you value the longer minimum security-support horizon listed for Charge 6.
For a new purchase, check verified local stock and price rather than assuming the Charge 5 is available or a better deal. Google lists minimum security support through December 2025 for Charge 5 and February 2028 for Charge 6; these dates concern security updates, not a confirmed shutdown of Fitbit services.
Fitbit Charge 5 at a glance
| Strengths | Important limits |
|---|---|
| Compact tracker for activity, sleep, heart-rate, and stress tracking | Not a full smartwatch; do not expect broad smartwatch functions |
| Built-in, phone, and dynamic GPS options for workouts | Built-in GPS can reduce battery life |
| Sleep score, estimated blood oxygen during sleep, and activity trends | Tracking estimates and trends are not medical diagnoses |
| EDA Scan for electrodermal activity associated with stress response | Stress tracking does not identify the cause of stress |
| ECG screening in supported regions | ECG cannot diagnose AFib or detect every heart condition |
| Google lists minimum security support through December 2025 | That minimum date is not evidence of a service shutdown |
Who should still use or buy it?
The Charge 5 can suit someone who wants a compact tracker for everyday activity, sleep, heart-rate, stress, and GPS workout tracking. Google documents these features in the Google Health app, including estimated blood oxygen during sleep and workout summaries.
For owners, judge the actual condition of your unit: how well the battery holds charge, whether the tracker still meets your needs, and whether its GPS options suit your workouts. Google says features and settings affect battery life, and a device may need charging more often after several hundred charge cycles.

What the Charge 5 does well
Everyday activity and health trends
Google documents activity and exercise tracking, Active Zone Minutes, sleep scoring, heart-rate notifications, estimated blood oxygen during sleep, and automatic activity recognition for activities lasting at least 15 minutes. The Google Health app provides health trends and workout summaries. Treat these as tracking features and estimates, not medical diagnoses.
GPS options for outdoor workouts
Charge 5 supports Built-in, Phone, and Dynamic GPS. In Dynamic mode, it uses a nearby phone’s GPS if available and otherwise uses built-in GPS; it does not switch GPS source if signal is lost during an exercise. Phone GPS uses the phone’s sensors. Google notes that built-in GPS can reduce battery life and advises syncing regularly to reduce satellite connection time.
Choose the GPS mode that suits the workout and whether you plan to carry your phone. These documented features do not establish a comprehensive comparison with dedicated running watches.

Sleep, stress, and recovery context
EDA Scan measures electrodermal activity associated with stress response. It can be a prompt to pause and check in with how you feel, but it does not tell you the cause of stress. Sleep score, heart-rate information, and other trends are best considered in context over time.

ECG is a screening feature, not a diagnosis
In supported regions, the Google ECG app analyzes a 30-second reading for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Google says the app cannot detect all heart conditions, and only a doctor can diagnose AFib. Check regional availability before treating ECG as a purchase reason, and seek professional care for symptoms or concerns.
Battery life: use estimates cautiously
Google Health Help Center estimates are for guidance, not guarantees—especially for a used or several-year-old tracker. Google lists up to seven days of battery life, up to three days with always-on display, and up to five hours of continuous built-in GPS. Actual results depend on features, settings, use, and the battery’s condition.
For a used or long-owned Charge 5, base the keep-or-replace decision on how long your own unit lasts between charges. Do not assume a new-device estimate describes an older battery.
Water and swimming
Google’s reviewed material for this article does not establish the water-resistance details or specific care instructions. Check current Google guidance for your device before swimming or exposing it to water, and follow the instructions for any replacement band.
