Fitbit symbols depend on the device and the screen they appear on: a moon on a watch face may indicate Sleep Mode, while a sleep tile in the app represents recorded sleep. Start by noting where you saw the symbol, then use the sections below to identify what it means and what to do. The Google Health app may still appear as the Fitbit app on some phones or help pages.

Quick guide: a symbol at the top of the watch face is usually a status indicator; one in quick settings is often a control; one during a workout relates to exercise; and a symbol in the app is usually a metric, score, or logged item. Fitbit’s device-specific navigation guide is the best reference when an icon’s appearance or gesture differs on your model.

Fitbit status symbols: settings, phone connection, and battery

Fitbit does not have one universal icon set. Symbols, gestures, and labels vary by model, firmware, and app version. Some status icons appear at the top of the clock face and disappear after about three seconds; on supported devices you can bring them back in quick settings or by swiping down. The exact gesture varies. Certain models also let you manage them under Settings > Display > Status indicators. See the official status-indicator guidance for device-specific steps.

Symbol or appearance Where it appears What it means What to do
Low or critical battery indicator Watch face, status area, or charging screen The battery needs charging. The icon does not reliably identify an exact percentage across models. Attach the model’s charging cable or dock and check that the charging indicator appears.
Battery icon while connected to power Charging screen The device is charging; the display differs by model. If the screen stays dark, wake it as the model guide describes. Some trackers require a tap or double-tap.
Full battery icon, sometimes with a smile on older devices Charging screen Charging is complete or nearly complete, depending on the device. Check the model’s charging guide rather than assuming a specific percentage.
Phone or connection indicator Status area or quick settings The Fitbit is not connected to the phone. This is not the same as a tracker having no internet connection. Check Bluetooth, phone proximity, and app sync; use the model-specific troubleshooting steps below.
Do Not Disturb indicator Quick settings or status area Notifications and certain alerts are suppressed. Turn it off if you want alerts to resume.
Sleep Mode indicator, often a moon or sleep-related icon Quick settings or status area A sleep-focused setting is active; display and notification behavior may change. Check Sleep Mode before assuming the screen or vibration has failed.
Screen Wake control or indicator Quick settings or display controls Controls whether turning your wrist wakes the display. If it is off, tap the display or press a button to view the screen.

Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode are different

Do Not Disturb is a general notification-suppression setting. Depending on the device, it can mute notifications, goal celebrations, reminders to move, and heart-zone alerts. Sleep Mode is designed for sleep: it can mute notifications, dim the display, prevent wrist-turn wake, and affect Always-On Display on supported watches. Fitbit says these modes cannot be active at the same time on the supported devices described in its navigation guidance. Sleep Mode may also follow a schedule and turn off automatically.

If the display will not wake or alerts stop arriving, check Sleep Mode and Do Not Disturb before restarting or resetting the tracker. Screen Wake is a separate display setting, not a health reading or alarm. Always-On Display and other display features can affect battery life.

When the phone-connection symbol appears

A disconnected indicator means the device is not connected to the phone; it does not by itself tell you whether Bluetooth is off, the phone is out of range, or the app has stopped syncing. Many Fitbit trackers rely on a phone for syncing and phone-dependent features.

  1. Bring the phone within Bluetooth range and confirm Bluetooth is on.
  2. Open the Google Health app (which may still be labeled Fitbit) and try a sync.
  3. Confirm the correct device is selected in the app.
  4. If syncing still fails, restart the Fitbit and phone, then check the phone’s operating-system compatibility for your model.
  5. Use the official model-specific sync instructions before removing and re-adding the device; re-pairing is not the first step for every connection problem.

Charging lights and battery symbols

Charging displays are model-specific, so a symbol that differs from an online picture is not automatically a fault. Fitbit’s charging guide documents examples including older devices and accessories:

  • Flex 2: individual white lights represent roughly 25% increments; a green light indicates a full charge.
  • Fitbit Flyer: LED colors indicate full, medium, or low charge.
  • Older devices: a full battery may be shown with a smile.

Do not translate these patterns into an exact percentage unless the instructions for your model say to. If the device repeatedly fails to show any sign of charging, check that the cable or dock is the correct one and consult the model’s official charging instructions.

Activity and health icons

On the device, a familiar symbol may open a feature or show a live reading; in the app it may represent a daily total, trend, goal, or manually logged entry. Fitbit’s activity-statistics guide explains that core metrics include steps and Active Zone Minutes or active minutes, while additional statistics depend on the device.

Icon or label What it commonly represents How to interpret it
Steps Steps counted from motion A step total is an estimate. Cycling and other non-step exercise may not increase it. The icon can show current progress, a daily total, or a goal.
Heart Current heart rate, resting heart rate, heart-rate tracking, a zone, or an alert Read the number, label, color, and surrounding alert text; the heart shape alone does not establish which one it is.
Exercise or running figure Exercise app, workout status, or recorded session It may mark a workout that is starting, paused, or complete. GPS, pace, distance, and available exercise types differ by model; do not assume a tracker has built-in GPS.
Sleep or “Z” Sleep Mode, detected sleep, a sleep summary, or Sleep Score Separate the device setting from data about the previous night. A moon in quick settings need not mean sleep has been recorded.
Flame Calories burned or a calorie-related goal It may be an estimate or a goal value; it is not necessarily a separate sensor reading.
Distance Estimated distance traveled How it is calculated and displayed depends on the device and activity.
Stairs or floors Floors climbed Availability depends on the model, including whether it has the required altimeter.
Water drop Water intake or a hydration goal This is generally logged or managed in the app, not directly measured by the tracker.
Scale Logged weight or a weight goal Weight data may be entered or synced rather than measured by the wrist device.
Food, plate, or calendar Food logging, calorie intake, a date, trend, schedule, or menstrual-health context Use the screen label and app context; the symbol alone does not identify one universal feature.

Heart-rate readings and zones

Heart-rate zone names and calculations vary. Fitbit’s current guidance describes personalized zones based on heart-rate reserve, while some other or older devices use a percentage of maximum heart rate. The labels may also differ: one device may say “moderate” and “vigorous,” another “fat burn” and “cardio.”

Zone label Personalized heart-rate-reserve system Maximum-heart-rate system used by some devices
Below or light Below 40% of heart-rate reserve Below 50% of maximum heart rate
Moderate or fat burn 40%–59% of heart-rate reserve 50%–69% of maximum heart rate
Vigorous or cardio 60%–84% of heart-rate reserve 70%–84% of maximum heart rate
Peak 85% or higher of heart-rate reserve 85% or higher of maximum heart rate

These are the ranges in Fitbit’s heart-rate-zone guidance; the system and wording used on your device may differ. A heart-rate reading or alert is a wellness feature, not a diagnosis. Consider symptoms and seek professional medical advice when appropriate.

Active Zone Minutes and buzz patterns

Active Zone Minutes are weighted by intensity, rather than simply counting every minute of exercise equally. In Fitbit’s guidance, a minute in the moderate zone earns one Active Zone Minute; a minute in the vigorous or peak zone earns two. For example, 10 minutes in a vigorous or peak zone count as 20 Active Zone Minutes, while 10 moderate-zone minutes count as 10. Older devices may use the label “active minutes.”

  • Designed for all-day wear: On-wrist Bluetooth calls, texts and phone notifications[5], customizable clock faces, Amazon Alexa built-in[6], Google Wallet & Maps, 6+ day battery[7]

Some supported devices use vibration to signal a zone change: one buzz for fat burn, two for cardio, and three for peak. This is model-specific, not a universal Fitbit code. See Fitbit’s Active Zone Minutes and zone-alert guidance.

Goal, reminder, alarm, and notification symbols

Goals, celebrations, and reminders to move

A target, progress ring, flag, trophy, or celebration can indicate progress toward a daily goal, a goal reached, weekly progress, a badge, or a prompt to set a goal. Check the nearby text and percentage: the graphic alone may not tell you whether the goal is complete.

Fitbit’s default reminder-to-move setup targets at least 250 steps per hour during 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week. If the target has not been reached, the reminder appears 10 minutes before the hour ends. Users can adjust the tracked hours. Activities without steps, such as spinning, do not necessarily count toward this hourly step goal. See the reminder-to-move instructions.

Device alerts versus phone notifications

An alarm, low-battery warning, reminder to move, goal celebration, heart-zone alert, and high-heart-rate notification are Fitbit-related alerts. Calls, texts, calendar reminders, and other app notifications are generally mirrored from a compatible nearby phone. For example, Google’s US listings for Charge 6 and Inspire 3 specify phone proximity and supported operating systems for notifications; requirements vary by model.

App tiles and scores are not device status icons

Scores summarize or interpret collected data; they are different from settings indicators and raw measurements. Availability can depend on device, account, region, app experience, and plan. The Google Health app feature guide provides a current map of app features.

  • Sleep Score: a personalized summary of aspects of sleep, including time asleep, heart rate, and restlessness on supported devices and app experiences. It is not the same thing as Sleep Mode or sleep duration. Availability of scores and detailed sleep stages varies. See Fitbit’s Sleep Score and Charge 5 feature information.
  • Daily Readiness Score: an estimate intended to help guide activity and workout recommendations in supported experiences. It is not medical clearance and may require compatible hardware, adequate data, or a paid plan; it may be absent when data are insufficient.
  • Stress Management Score: an estimate related to physical responses and other factors, not a direct measurement of psychological stress or a diagnosis.
  • Cardio Fitness Level: an app metric related to cardiovascular fitness; availability and the data used depend on the supported device and experience.
  • Vitals, oxygen saturation, and skin-temperature variation: feature availability is device- and market-dependent. These measurements are not intended for medical diagnosis. Google’s product information for Charge 6 describes feature and membership qualifications.

A missing score can mean that the device does not support the feature, the account or region is not eligible, a plan is required, or there is not enough recent data. It does not by itself mean the tracker is broken.

Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the icon

Notifications or reminders are missing

  1. Check whether Do Not Disturb or Sleep Mode is enabled.
  2. Confirm Bluetooth is on and the phone is nearby.
  3. Check notification permissions for the phone and the Google Health/Fitbit app.
  4. Confirm your model supports that notification type and that the phone meets its operating-system requirements.
  5. If alerts remain missing, follow the official missing-alert troubleshooting steps for your device.

The Fitbit will not sync

Try the connection checks in the status-symbol section first. A disconnected icon can reflect phone range, Bluetooth, app state, or permissions; it does not identify the cause by itself. Prefer model-specific sync guidance over an immediate factory reset or device removal.

  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

The display will not wake

Check Screen Wake and Sleep Mode. If wrist-turn wake is disabled, tap the screen or use the device button. A dim or inactive display may be an intentional setting rather than a hardware failure.

The icon differs from an online chart

Identify the exact model before comparing icons. Fitbit families differ in display gestures, battery indicators, available metrics, GPS, and menu labels. Find the model in the Google Health app’s device settings or consult the official model guide. A photograph of the screen can help when asking support, but avoid treating a third-party universal chart as definitive.

A score or metric is absent

Check whether the model supports it, whether the app and account have access, and whether enough data have been collected. Some features are region- or plan-dependent; adding a newer tracker will not necessarily resolve a missing score caused by settings, permissions, or insufficient data.

Health-data limits

Fitbit readings, zones, scores, and alerts are wellness tools. A measurement is not a diagnosis, a readiness or stress score is not a clinical assessment, and a notification is not an emergency service. Do not use an icon or score as a substitute for medical advice. Availability and interpretation vary by device and feature.
