If your Apple Watch won’t sign in to your Apple Account, check the paired iPhone first: when it is signed in, the watch automatically signs in to that account. If setup skipped sign-in, use the Apple Watch app on the iPhone to sign in later. Then follow the branch that matches the exact message—password or verification code, locked account, server error, or Activation Lock.
Start by identifying which problem you have
“Apple Watch won’t sign in to my Apple Account” can describe several different failures:
- No sign-in prompt during setup: sign in later from the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Password or verification-code prompt: check the account credentials and complete two-factor authentication.
- Apple Account locked or disabled: recover access or request access if Apple offers that option.
- Activation Lock: the watch is linked to an Apple Account and needs that account’s credentials or its owner’s removal of the lock.
- A spinner or server connection error: check Apple’s service status, then try another network or try again later.
Use the matching section below rather than erasing the watch immediately. Erasing it without unpairing does not remove Activation Lock.
1. Check the Apple Account on the paired iPhone first
Apple says an Apple Watch automatically signs in to the Apple Account on its paired iPhone. On that iPhone, open Settings and check that the account shown at the top is the one you intend to use. If the iPhone itself cannot sign in, resolve that account issue first.

If setup did not ask you to sign in, or you skipped the prompt, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, tap General, then Apple Account, and sign in.
2. Complete the password and verification prompts
Enter the Apple Account email address or phone number and password. A new-device sign-in may also require a six-digit two-factor authentication code shown on a trusted Apple device or sent to a trusted phone number.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Apple Account.
- If asked, retrieve the current six-digit code from a trusted device or phone number.
- Enter the code on the sign-in prompt and follow any remaining setup instructions.
If you forgot the password
Follow Apple’s official “Forgot Password?” recovery steps. A trusted device or trusted phone number may be used for recovery. Avoid third-party password-reset utilities.

3. Respond to account-status messages
“Apple Account locked” or disabled
This is an account-access issue, not a watch hardware problem. Apple says too many incorrect password or account-detail entries can cause a security lock. Stop guessing and follow Apple’s password-reset or account-recovery instructions. If Apple shows a Request Access option, use it.

Recover access to the account, then return to the Apple Watch app and try signing in again. A new account will not automatically restore purchases, subscriptions, backups, or other data associated with the old account.
4. Treat Activation Lock differently
Activation Lock is not an ordinary sign-in failure. It means the watch is linked to an Apple Account. Enter the credentials for that linked account. If the watch is second-hand, the previous owner may need to remove the lock.

Erasing the watch without unpairing it from its paired iPhone does not remove Activation Lock. For a used watch, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account. If you own the watch and have proof of purchase, check Apple’s Activation Lock support request process; Apple determines eligibility and documentation requirements.
5. Fix a spinner or server connection error
If sign-in keeps spinning or says it cannot connect to a server, the issue may be an Apple service problem or your network.
- Check Apple’s System Status page for a relevant service outage.
- If there is an outage, wait and try again later.
- If no relevant outage is listed, try another internet network or try again later.
6. Update and restart for a general setup error
For a broader setup error, make sure the paired iPhone has the latest iOS available, then restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch. Keep the devices close together during setup and syncing. Follow any on-screen instructions and retry sign-in.

What not to do
- Do not use a generic password-reset app or unofficial firmware tool.
- Do not pay for an Activation Lock bypass.
- Do not erase a watch expecting Activation Lock to disappear.
- Do not buy hardware or a repair utility as a fix for account authentication.

Will erasing an Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?
