A flying tourbillon changes how the rotating cage is held, not the job the tourbillon does. In a conventional tourbillon, the cage that carries the balance and escapement is supported from above and below. A flying tourbillon removes the upper bridge, so the cage is carried from below and the dial side of the movement is open to view. That mounting change is the core mechanical difference. It alters the architecture and the appearance of the movement, but it does not by itself make a watch more accurate.
What both designs share
Both are tourbillons. The balance and escapement sit inside a cage that rotates as part of the regulating system. Blancpain describes the regulating organ as built into a cage set in rotation, and that description applies to either layout. The tourbillon’s original purpose is tied to gravity: Breguet explains its historical rationale in relation to a pocket watch held vertically, where the rotating cage was meant to average out the positional errors that gravity introduces. Blancpain’s complications page and Breguet’s tourbillon page cover these points.
The conventional layout: two bridges
In a conventional tourbillon, the cage is supported between an upper bridge and a lower bridge. The upper bridge crosses over the cage from the dial side, which means the balance and escapement are partly hidden when you look at the movement face-up.
- Support: upper and lower bridges both hold the cage.
- Dial-side view: the upper bridge sits across the cage and restricts the view.
- Architecture: the familiar, widely used arrangement for tourbillon calibers.
The flying layout: support from below
A flying tourbillon removes the upper bridge. The cage is supported from below, and nothing crosses over it from above. The word “flying” describes this exposed look. It does not mean the cage floats without support. Lettres du Brassus, Blancpain’s publication, describes the lower side as the sole support in its own design, and designs vary in how that lower support is arranged, so the bearing details should be checked for each caliber rather than assumed.

Blancpain’s complications page puts it this way:
“We also presented the first flying tourbillon, whose particular feature was its unusual construction, with upper bridge removed to offer an unobstructed view of its principal components.”
That “first” is Blancpain’s own historical claim. The same publisher dates its flying design’s debut to 1989 and presents it as the first in serially produced wristwatches. Treat that as the manufacturer’s account, not an independently adjudicated priority finding.

What changes, side by side
| Feature | Conventional tourbillon | Flying tourbillon |
|---|---|---|
| Upper bridge | Present, crosses over the cage | Removed |
| Cage support | Upper and lower bridges | Concentrated below |
| Dial-side view of balance and escapement | Partly obstructed by the upper bridge | Unobstructed, per Blancpain’s description of its design |
| Construction difficulty | Not stated as a general comparison | Described by Blancpain as more demanding to build |
| Movement or case height | Varies by caliber; no general figure stated | Varies by caliber; Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 press release describes reduced structural height for its own flying tourbillon |
| Basic regulating principle | Rotating cage carrying balance and escapement | Same principle |
| Inherent accuracy advantage | Not established | Not established |
What the mounting change does and does not affect
The most visible effect is the view. With the upper bridge gone, the balance and escapement can be watched directly from the dial side. That is the design’s main presentation advantage.
The structural effect is a shift in load. Removing the upper support means the lower support and its mounting carry the cage’s work alone. Blancpain describes its flying construction as more demanding to build, and that is a manufacturing consideration rather than a timekeeping one.

Some makers associate the flying arrangement with reduced height or a lighter visual profile. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 announcement of its Master Hybris Mechanica Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Tourbillon describes reduced structural height for that specific caliber. That is an outcome of one design, not a guaranteed dimension for every flying tourbillon.
What does not change is the regulating principle. A flying cage is not a new escapement or a different tourbillon mechanism. IWC Schaffhausen’s article on the flying tourbillon frames it as a visual and architectural variation on the tourbillon, and the same framing holds here.

Accuracy and durability: what can and cannot be said
No published, controlled comparison shows that a flying tourbillon keeps better time than a conventional one, or that it lasts longer or costs more to service. The manufacturers cited here describe their designs and their history, but do not provide head-to-head performance or service data for the two layouts. Any timekeeping claim should be tied to the specific caliber, with the maker’s stated test conditions or an independent measurement for that watch.
How to check a specific watch
- Confirm the caliber’s architecture. Look for whether an upper bridge crosses the cage on the dial side. If it does not, the watch uses a flying layout.
- Read the maker’s technical description of the cage support. Note whether the lower support is described as the sole support.
- Compare the published movement and case height in the maker’s specifications, not a general assumption about flying designs.
- Find the stated timekeeping performance and the test conditions behind it. Compare only figures that were measured the same way.
- Check the maker’s service information for that caliber before buying, since service requirements depend on the specific movement.
Where the cited sources stop
The articles and pages cited here establish how each maker builds and describes its tourbillon. They do not establish that either layout is more accurate, more durable, or cheaper to maintain. Those questions need model-specific data, which is the right place to look when a particular watch is under consideration.
