The blue-accented Fortis Marinemaster Ref. 8001 has a gray dial—not a black one, despite how it can look in poor photographs. That small surprise is the heart of Tomas Rosputinsky’s 2022 account: seeing the watch in person changed his preference and drew attention to the case’s distinctive finishing and sporting details.
Why the Ref. 8001’s gray dial can look black
Rosputinsky expected a black-dial watch after seeing online photographs. When the blue-accented example arrived, he realized the dial was gray. As he put it, “I went online and, indeed, I confirmed that the blue Fortis Marinemaster 8001 comes with a gray dial, not a black one.” The images had concealed the difference; seeing the watch in person changed his mind about the color.
Specialist coverage describes two variants: one with yellow and red accents, and a blue-accented version with a gray dial. If you are assessing a listing, ask for clear, well-lit photographs rather than relying on dark or low-quality images. Check how the dial reads across several angles and compare the accent colors.
What the Fortis Marinemaster 8001 is
Fratello’s vintage-watch coverage places the Ref. 8001 in the early 1970s and describes it as a three-register chronograph with a manual Valjoux 72 movement. The reported specifications are:

These are secondary-source specifications, not a reference-specific technical sheet from Fortis. The design details reported for the model include running seconds, minute and hour counters, a tachymeter scale, pump pushers, a large winding crown, and a screw-down case back.
Case finishing and details worth checking
Rosputinsky singles out the case’s long, flat lugs and the contrast between circular brushing on the top surfaces and polished sides. Those surfaces make condition more than a cosmetic footnote: polishing may soften edges and alter the original transitions between finishes. Ask for close, sharp photographs of the lugs, case sides, bezel, and back, and have a qualified watchmaker assess the watch in person when possible.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Originality also matters. The 2015 overview notes that replacement dials, bezels, and hands may be difficult to find. Ask whether those parts are original, replaced, or refinished, and request documentation or detailed images where available. A 20 mm Tropic-style strap is one possible pairing based on the reported lug width, but confirm the actual width and fit on the individual watch before buying a strap.
Does a vintage Ref. 8001 remain safe to wear in water?
No historical rating can establish the water resistance of a particular watch today. One dealer listing describes its example as rated to 200 m while also marking its current waterproof status “No.” Seals age, cases can be damaged or altered, and service history varies. Do not swim or submerge a Ref. 8001 on the strength of its vintage rating; have a qualified watchmaker inspect it and pressure-test it before any water exposure.

Dating the model and evaluating an example
The available dates do not settle the model’s production history. Fratello’s 2015 overview places the Ref. 8001 in the early 1970s, while a Romain Réa listing dates one offered example to 1965. Those accounts are not reconciled by a Fortis serial-number record or reference-specific production documentation in the cited material, so neither establishes a definitive production year, run, or quantity.
When comparing watches, evaluate the specific example rather than relying on a broad description:
