There is no single definitive answer to Fratello’s question, “What vintage watch would you buy with €5,000?” The contributors’ 2025 selections are personal favorites, not an objective ranking or a promise that every example can still be found below that ceiling. Their shortlist is useful because it spans dress watches, everyday watches, chronographs, and divers—and because the right choice depends as much on condition and serviceability as on the name on the dial.
Here, “vintage” is a deliberately broad label: Robert-Jan Broer says he tried to keep his own picks pre-1980, while other contributors include later watches and one 1990s example. Collectors do not share a universal cutoff; the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie has used 20 years or older as a guideline, while some collectors prefer pre-1980. Fratello’s 2025 selections should therefore be read as a set of ideas to compare, not a strict definition or current-price list.
How to read the €5,000 shortlist
The ceiling is a prompt for the contributors’ choices, not a verified market guarantee. Prices depend on the exact reference, condition, originality, and what is available when you shop. A 2025 article-era Navitimer 806 example was described at roughly €4,500–€4,900, while a Speedmaster Mark II was noted from around €2,500; neither figure is a current quote. Check current offers and compare like-for-like watches before treating a model as within budget. Fratello cites Chrono24 and Bulang & Sons as sourcing leads, not as guarantees of present inventory or seller quality.
The selection is also not exhaustive or ranked. It brings together watches with different purposes, from slim dress pieces to large divers, so start with the kind of watch you will actually wear rather than a brand hierarchy.

Dress watches and everyday choices
Rolex Datejust: compare the generation, not just the name
The Datejust appears in several forms across the contributors’ lists: Thomas discusses the 16xx, 16xxx, and 162xx generations; Jorg focuses on ref. 1601; and Broer names ref. 1600. Those references are not interchangeable buying propositions. Thomas notes trade-offs in price and serviceability between generations, making it important to compare the specific watch, its condition, and access to competent service rather than assuming every Datejust has the same upkeep or budget profile.
Omega Constellation: mid-century variety
Broer suggests Constellation references 2648, 2652, and 2852, including 1950s examples with different movement and dial configurations. That range makes reference-level research essential: confirm which configuration is being offered and judge its originality and condition rather than relying on the Constellation name alone.
Omega Seamaster ref. 166.010: a non-diver alternative
Thomas’s Seamaster example is ref. 166.010, a non-diver, alongside other non-diver Seamasters. He presents it as an alternative at a lower budget. It is a sensible direction to explore if you want a vintage Omega for everyday wear but do not specifically need a dive-watch design.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra-Thin ref. 145.8.79.S: a later interpretation
Mike includes this 1990s-era JLC while acknowledging that it stretches his interpretation of “vintage.” It is a small, thin dress watch in his account, worn on a 17mm strap. Treat it as a later-era option if your definition is flexible, and check the actual dimensions and lug width of the individual watch before buying.

Cartier Santos Carrée ref. 2961: distinctive, but variant-sensitive
Jorg’s two-tone Santos Carrée ref. 2961 is an 1980s selection. He warns that dial variants and condition can push examples above the €5,000 ceiling. Confirm the exact variant and condition in any listing; the reference name alone does not establish that a particular watch fits the budget.
Chronographs: from classic timing to unusual designs
Omega Speedmaster Professional ref. 145.022
Broer selects the Professional ref. 145.022. It offers a route into the vintage Speedmaster family, but an individual example still needs reference-specific checks for originality, condition, and service history. A familiar model name should not substitute for assessing the watch in front of you.

Omega Speedmaster Mark II ref. 145.014
Nacho’s choice is the 1970s Mark II ref. 145.014. Its case and design give it a different presence from the Professional, so try one on if fit matters to you. Fratello’s 2025 article mentioned examples from around €2,500 at that time; availability and prices may have changed.
Omega De Ville Chronograph ref. 145.018
Jorg includes ref. 145.018, with dial variants affecting whether an example sits within budget. Compare the exact dial and overall condition, and avoid treating a reference-family recommendation as a guarantee that every variant will meet the same price target.
Breitling Navitimer 806
Nacho’s mid-century Navitimer 806 is a classic chronograph option. Fratello described a clean example at approximately €4,500–€4,900 in its 2025 article; that is historical article context, not a current offer or reliable price floor. At that level, condition and originality deserve particular scrutiny.

Gallet Multichron 12
Mike’s chronograph selection is the Gallet Multichron 12, equipped with an Excelsior Park EP40 movement. As with any vintage chronograph, establish what movement and components are actually present and whether a watchmaker familiar with the movement can service it before committing.

Doxa Sub 300T Sharkhunter
Nacho chooses the late-1960s Sharkhunter, the black-dial version of the Doxa Sub 300T. It is the shortlist’s direct choice for a vintage diver with a distinctive look. For any old dive watch, evaluate condition and water resistance independently: age and dive-watch styling do not prove that a watch remains suitable for swimming or diving.
Seiko 6159-7000 and 6159-7001
Mike highlights Seiko’s Hi-Beat Professional diver family. The article dates the 6159-7000’s debut to 1968 and describes its automatic movement as running at 36,000 vibrations per hour. He characterizes the watch as large but comfortable on a 19mm strap. Try the case on your wrist and verify the actual strap width; the 19mm detail applies to his Seiko example, not the entire shortlist.

Grand Seiko 44GS
Thomas calls out the 44GS, introduced in 1967, while noting that sourcing one is harder than finding his other choices. That scarcity makes patience and careful verification more important than broad assumptions about availability. Confirm the specific watch’s condition and originality before weighing it against more readily found options.
What to inspect before buying
Broer’s stated rule for his own selection is: “Another rule is that I want to buy the watch in the best possible condition for this amount.” That is a useful principle for condition-sensitive vintage watches, but it does not mean every reference is easy or inexpensive to maintain. His practical cautions include restored or reprinted dials, incorrect crowns, and corroded movements.
- Dial and components: Check whether the dial appears original and whether the crown and other visible components are correct for the watch. Restoration can affect both originality and value.
- Case and corrosion: Look closely for wear, damage, and corrosion, including signs that may point to a neglected movement. A polished or worn case can also change the watch’s appearance and condition.
- Serviceability: Ask whether the manufacturer supports the watch or whether a competent watchmaker can source parts. Treat this as a reference- and movement-specific question, not a blanket promise about a brand.
- Fit: Check actual case dimensions and strap width, then consider how the watch sits on your wrist. The 6159’s 19mm strap and the JLC’s 17mm strap illustrate why widths cannot be assumed across models.
- Documentation versus condition: Boxes and papers can be useful, but Broer’s guidance prioritizes the watch’s condition over accessories. Do not let a complete set distract from problems with the watch itself.
- Like-for-like comparison: Compare the same reference and broadly similar condition, originality, and configuration. Dial variants and generation differences can materially affect price and availability.
Choose by the watch you want to wear
For a dressier direction, compare the Constellation, Datejust, JLC, and Santos Carrée; for chronographs, consider the Speedmaster references, De Ville, Navitimer, and Gallet; for a vintage diver, look at the Doxa and Seiko. The right shortlist depends on your taste, wrist fit, and willingness to investigate service and originality—not on a claim that one model is objectively best. None of these selections establishes investment performance or a guaranteed current price under €5,000.
