Fratello’s five horological wishes for 2025 were shorter waits for popular watches, more expressive dials, fewer unnecessary date windows, stronger attention to enthusiasts, and more affordable dress watches. They are an editorial snapshot from the start of 2025—not evidence that the industry fulfilled those wishes later in the year.
Jorg Weppelink’s Fratello article, published January 3, 2025, drew on watches its writers had seen, tried, or covered during 2024. Its five requests share a common concern: watchmakers should balance commercial choices with access, visual character, practical use, and the interests of enthusiasts.
1. Shorter waiting lists for standard watches
Fratello’s first wish was for buyers to spend less time waiting for standard models. When an ordinary watch is difficult to obtain or pushes a buyer toward a large premium, the anticipation can give way to frustration. The article argues that scarcity created as a marketing strategy risks making a watch less appealing rather than more exciting.
That is a criticism of the buying experience, not a claim that every long wait is deliberately manufactured. The wish is for popular standard watches to be more accessible without turning a purchase into a prolonged chase.

2. More dials with distinctive materials and texture
The second wish was for more special dials. Stone and other unusual materials can make the dial—not just the case shape or complication—the visual focus. Fratello points to lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, and meteorite, and notes that this kind of variety has reached more affordable brands as well.
The article names Dennison, Baltic, Nivada Grenchen, and Toledano & Chan among the brands offering examples of more distinctive dial treatments. These are illustrations of the direction Fratello welcomed, not a current buying guide or a guarantee of present availability.

3. Date windows only when they suit the watch
Fratello’s date-window wish is about design choices, not rejecting the date complication altogether. A date can be useful, and the article recognizes designs where it makes sense, including GMT travel watches and classic Rolex models with a Cyclops magnifier. Its objection is to a window that disrupts a dial’s balance without adding enough value for that particular design.
As examples of dateless watches with balanced dials, the article cites no-date versions of the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M and 39mm Longines Legend Diver models. Its broader request is simple: when a watch’s design works better without a date, offer a dateless option where suitable.

4. Keep enthusiasts in view alongside commercial goals
The fourth wish asks brands to consider loyal enthusiasts as well as broader commercial opportunities. Fratello questions whether collaborations such as Panerai with Prada and Audemars Piguet with Marvel serve the brands’ core enthusiasts. It also contrasts the launch of the Patek Philippe Cubitus with what the article presents as fans’ interest in classic models and a steel Nautilus.
Those examples reflect the article’s editorial judgments; they do not establish a consensus among consumers. The underlying point is that a new collaboration or collection may attract attention while still leaving long-time fans wondering whether a brand is listening to them.

5. More affordable dress watches that work beyond formalwear
Fratello’s most directly purchase-oriented wish was for more affordable dress watches. It praises the Echo/Neutra Rivanera and Serica 1174 Parade, as well as Raymond Weil Millesime models, Dennison stone-dial models, the Frederique Constant Moneta Moonphase, and Anoma A1.
The appeal is not limited to wearing a dress watch with a suit. Fratello describes this newer generation as capable of working with casual clothing as well as more formal outfits. If you are shopping in this category, “automatic dress watch” can be a useful search phrase, but check current brand listings for specifications, configurations, prices, and availability before choosing a model. The 2025 article does not provide a complete, current comparison of those details.

What ties the five wishes together?
The list is less a prediction of what watch brands would do than a statement of what Fratello wanted them to prioritize. Across its five points, the recurring balance is between scarcity and access, business decisions and enthusiast loyalty, and practical features and dial design. The shared request is for choices that make a watch more satisfying to own, not simply more difficult to obtain or more attention-grabbing.
