Fratello’s five-watch shortlist spans modern tributes to the Speedmaster’s early straight-lug lineage, from CK2915 and CK2998 to the 105.003 “Ed White.” It is an editorial ranking, not an official OMEGA hierarchy, and the watches range from close historical reinterpretations to the more contemporary Speedmaster ’57. The 2024 First OMEGA in Space (FOiS) is a separate, newer generation worth distinguishing from the 2012 model in the list.
What “straight-lug Speedmaster” means here
The early Speedmaster generations CK2915, CK2998, 105.002 and 105.003 provide the design reference for Fratello’s October 11, 2024 selection. “Modern” covers both anniversary tributes and watches that borrow elements of the lineage without reproducing one original reference feature for feature. Fratello’s ordering reflects its editorial judgment, not an OMEGA ranking. Fratello’s original selection gives the reference-level context.

Dimensions and specifications in this table are those reported by Fratello in its 2024 article. Case diameter alone does not determine fit: lug-to-lug length and thickness also affect how a watch wears.
1. Speedmaster Calibre 321: the 105.003-inspired steel model
Reference 311.30.40.30.01.001 debuted in 2020 and takes its cues from the 105.003 “Ed White.” Its 39.7 mm case is paired with a 47.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 13 mm thickness. A black galvanized step dial, three registers, ceramic tachymeter bezel and sapphire crystal give it a modern execution of the classic chronograph layout.

Fratello’s article highlights the recreated Calibre 321 and specialized assembly and service arrangements. It reported an estimated annual production of 1,000–2,000 pieces and a €17,100 list price in October 2024; neither figure establishes current production, availability or price.
2. First-generation FOiS: a compact CK2998-inspired model
The first First Omega in Space, reference 311.32.40.30.01.001, arrived in 2012, inspired by the CK2998. It combines a 39.7 mm steel case with a 47 mm lug-to-lug length and 14 mm thickness. The black dial uses Alpha hands, and the hand-wound Calibre 1861 sits behind a closed caseback. The watch originally came on a brown leather strap.

Fratello noted owners using aftermarket bracelets, including a Forstner Flat Link with 19 mm end links. That example does not establish fit for every reference or for the later FOiS. The first-generation model was discontinued in 2020. Fratello’s October 2024 article observed secondary-market asking prices starting around €4,000; that is a dated market observation, not a current quote.
3. Speedmaster ’57: a different dial and timing layout
The latest generation of the Speedmaster ’57 arrived in 2022. Reference 332.10.41.51.01.001 measures 40.5 mm across, 49.6 mm lug-to-lug and 12.99 mm thick. Unlike the three-register models in the list, it has two counters and a date at six, with Broad Arrow central hour and minute hands. Its hand-wound Calibre 9906 has a reported 60-hour power reserve.

Fratello identified black, green, blue and burgundy dial options. The black version has a sandwich dial; the other listed colors use non-sandwich dials. In the October 2024 article, Fratello gave prices of €10,100 on leather and €10,500 on bracelet. Those publication-era figures should not be treated as current retail prices.
4. Speedmaster 60th Anniversary: a CK2915 tribute
Reference 311.10.39.30.01.001 was released in 2017 as a tribute to CK2915. Its 38.6 mm steel case measures 48 mm lug-to-lug and 13.92 mm thick. A matte black dial, Hesalite crystal and Calibre 1861 keep the specification comparatively restrained beside the newer Calibre 321 editions.

Fratello reported two production quantities: 557 watches in the Trilogy box set and 3,557 standalone watches. Its article records a €6,600 launch price in 2017 and secondary-market asking prices starting at roughly €7,000 in October 2024. Current availability and value are not established by those historical figures.

Reference 311.50.39.30.01.001 uses a 38.6 mm Canopus Gold case with the same reported 48 mm lug-to-lug length and 13.92 mm thickness as the 60th Anniversary model. Its distinctive details include a black onyx step dial, Canopus Gold markers, a Grand Feu enamel tachymeter scale and a sapphire caseback. The recreated Calibre 321 is visible through the back, which also has a blue sapphire set in the hippocampus eye.

How to choose among the five
- For the closest named lineage: the Calibre 321 steel model points to the 105.003; the first-generation FOiS to CK2998; and the 60th Anniversary to CK2915.
- For a two-counter layout and date: the Speedmaster ’57 is the outlier. The other models use the more familiar three-register approach.
- For a smaller case diameter: the two 38.6 mm anniversary/Canopus models are smallest by diameter, but their 48 mm lug-to-lug length and 13.92 mm thickness still matter for fit.
- For precious metal and elaborate dial materials: the Canopus Gold combines a gold case with onyx, enamel and a display back; it is materially different from the steel models.
- For a discontinued reference: the 2012 FOiS and 60th Anniversary require careful checking of seller, condition, provenance and actual asking price. The figures quoted above are not live market data.
The 2024 FOiS is a distinct generation
OMEGA’s October 3, 2024 release reintroduced the FOiS as a modern update linked to CK 2998, which OMEGA dates to 1959. The company also connects the watch to astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, who wore a personally purchased watch on Sigma 7, launched October 3, 1962. OMEGA specifies a symmetrical 39.70 mm polished-brushed steel case, a black aluminum tachymeter bezel with “Dot Over Ninety,” a grey-blue dial, vintage-style Alpha hour and minute hands, and Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. Listed configurations include black or brown leather straps and a metal flat-link bracelet. See OMEGA’s official 2024 FOiS announcement for the release details.
This is not the 2012 reference in Fratello’s five: that earlier watch is 311.32.40.30.01.001 with Calibre 1861. The two generations should be treated as separate models; the cited sources do not establish interchangeability of bracelets or other parts. Fratello’s original five-watch article predates the 2024 return, so the newer FOiS can be considered alongside the list, but it was not one of its five selections.
