Fratello’s five vintage Zenith picks span a pre-El Primero chronograph, the 1969 launch-era designs, a 1971 model and a late-1990s pilot’s watch. They are an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking of every vintage Zenith. The value of the list is in the contrast: angular and round cases, restrained and colorful dials, and different kinds of chronograph history.
What Fratello’s top five includes
Jorg Weppelink’s February 28, 2025 selection ranges from the A277, produced before the El Primero, to the Rainbow Fly-Back, which arrived decades later. The list also includes three early El Primero references: the A384, A386 and A3817. Fratello’s article is the source for the selection and its evaluations.
| Model | Period | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| A277 | 1968–1970 | Steel chronograph that predates the El Primero |
| El Primero A384 | 1969 launch era | Angular tonneau case and three black subdials |
| El Primero A386 | 1969 launch era | Round case and overlapping tri-colour subdials |
| El Primero A3817 | 1971 | Tonneau case paired with a colorful dial |
| El Primero Rainbow Fly-Back ref. 02.0480.405 | Debuted in 1997 | Aviation-inspired details and fly-back chronograph function |
The five watches
El Primero A384: the angular 1969 launch model
The A384 was one of the three watches in the El Primero’s 1969 launch family. Its 37 mm tonneau-shaped case has a silver dial, three black subdials and a black outer tachymeter ring. Fratello identifies its movement as caliber 3019 PHC, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, with 31 jewels and a 50-hour power reserve.
Age can change the look significantly: Fratello notes that black dial elements may fade toward brown, and that dials and lume can deteriorate. The Gay Frères ladder bracelet may also be worn or need cleaning or restoration. These are possible issues to inspect, not a diagnosis of every surviving A384. Zenith’s official historical material places the A384 among the sporty tonneau-case El Primero references of 1969.
El Primero Rainbow Fly-Back: a pilot’s chronograph from 1997
Fratello dates the Rainbow Fly-Back’s public debut to 1997 and describes it as a response to a French Air Force request for a pilot’s chronograph. Zenith added a fly-back function to caliber 400 to create caliber 405. The reference 02.0480.405 has a 40 mm case and is 12.6 mm thick.
Its aviation character comes through in the details: red markings for the first 20 minutes on the bezel, a red central chronograph hand, aviation-sector colors on the minute counter, and a matte satin-brushed case and bracelet. Fratello warns that the red bezel markings have faded on some examples, so inspect their condition rather than assuming every watch retains its original appearance.
Rank #2
- Automatic movement
- Silver chronograph dial
- Brown leather strap
- Rose gold case
- Water resistant to 330 feet (100 M): suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving
El Primero A386: the classic round-case counterpart
The A386 was also part of the 1969 El Primero trio. It pairs a round 38 mm case and long lugs with a white dial and overlapping blue, light gray and anthracite subdials. Fratello identifies caliber 3019 PHC and notes the date at 4:30, red central chronograph hand and pump pushers.
On older examples, Fratello flags dial and lume discoloration and wear to the ladder bracelet as points to assess. Zenith’s history of the A3817 also identifies the A386 as a more classical round-case El Primero, with the tri-colour dial as a defining feature.

- Used Book in Good Condition
A277: a pre-El Primero chronograph
Produced from 1968 to 1970, the A277 is a 40 mm steel chronograph that came before the El Primero. Fratello gives its thickness as 14.5 mm and its lug spacing as 22 mm. It describes two dial-and-hand variants and a manual-winding caliber 146H, with later examples using caliber 146HP. Zenith’s official ICONS material independently identifies the A277 as a 1968–1970 chronograph predating the El Primero.
Condition is especially important when judging an individual A277: Fratello describes bezel wear ranging from natural fading to heavy damage. The model is associated with a Gay Frères ladder bracelet, though a buyer may prefer a more robust bracelet. Check the specific watch and bracelet rather than assuming they are original, intact or appropriate for every wearer.

- Vintage style hypoallergenic croc-print vegan leather bracelet with matching brass buckle.

El Primero A3817: a 1971 blend of two early designs
The A3817 combines the tonneau case associated with the A384 and the colorful dial approach of the A386. Fratello describes its shark-tooth minute track and says it uses the same early El Primero movement as the original trio. Zenith’s May 18, 2021 press material confirms the 1971 release year and design combination. Zenith stated that only 1,000 were produced; that is the manufacturer’s figure, not an independently verified population count. See Zenith’s A3817 press material.

Vintage condition can alter both a watch’s appearance and how confidently its originality can be assessed. Focus on the specific example, not just the reference name.
- Dial and lume: Look for discoloration, deterioration and consistency across the dial and luminous material. Aged appearance alone does not establish originality.
- Bezel: Check wear and legibility, especially on an A277 or the Rainbow Fly-Back, where Fratello notes bezel condition or faded red markings.
- Bracelet: Examine a ladder bracelet for wear and condition. Confirm whether it is included and whether it suits your needs; a replacement bracelet changes the watch’s configuration.
- Identity and provenance: Compare the watch’s movement and case serial numbers with its documentation and ask what is known about its service history.
Zenith archive, certificate and restoration options
Zenith’s Extracts and Certificates service says a register extract can identify a watch’s model, functions, caliber and production date from its movement and case serial numbers. The brand describes its certificate-of-origin service as an in-depth examination at Le Locle. Check Zenith’s current service terms directly before relying on a particular service or turnaround.
Zenith describes its ICONS collection as vintage watches sourced, restored and certified by the Manufacture. Its ICONS Epilogue restoration history discusses the use of historical components and traceability for selected ICONS watches.
