Fratello’s five modern Vacheron Constantin favorites are the Historiques American 1921, Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, 1972 Prestige, Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 and Historiques 222. The list is a personal selection by Jorg Weppelink, not a definitive ranking: four are modern revivals of historic designs, and Fratello notes that other writers might choose different watches.
Weppelink’s article was published March 21, 2025. Its specifications and catalog observations below reflect that article unless a current listing is noted. Vacheron Constantin’s UK collection site, consulted October 7, 2026, lists the American 1921 in several sizes and metals and a 41.5 mm white-gold Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin; that does not establish availability in other markets.

1. Historiques American 1921: an angled dial made for driving
The American 1921 stands out because its dial is rotated within the case, making the display easier to glance at when the wearer’s hand is on a steering wheel. Fratello presents the modern watch as a recreation of a driver’s watch for the American market. It is the most immediately distinctive choice in the five if dial orientation matters more to you than a conventional layout.

Weppelink describes 36.5 mm and 40 mm versions in white or rose gold, with hand-wound caliber 4400 AS visible through a sapphire caseback. The article gives the movement’s thickness as 2.8 mm, its rate as 28,800 vibrations per hour and its power reserve as 65 hours. The official UK all-collections page currently lists 36.5 mm and 40 mm versions in pink and white gold. Fratello also identifies a platinum Excellence Platine edition limited to 100 pieces; that limited edition is distinct from the current UK listings.
2. Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin: a complicated sports watch
This pick combines the Overseas’ integrated-bracelet sports-watch design with a perpetual calendar, a complication that tracks calendar irregularities. Fratello traces the generation to the 2016 overhaul of the Overseas collection and discusses white gold with a gray dial, pink gold with silver or blue, and another white-gold variant.

The article reports a 41.5 mm gold case and caliber 1120 QPSQ, with 36 jewels. The movement is reported as 4.05 mm thick, running at 19,800 vibrations per hour, with a 40-hour reserve. The official UK page currently lists a 41.5 mm white-gold Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. Fratello’s article also reported a CHF 119,000 list price and pre-owned asking prices starting at about €75,000 in March 2025; these are historical figures, not current quotations or a guarantee of transaction prices.
3. 1972 Prestige: an asymmetric dress-watch reissue
The 1972 Prestige revisits an asymmetrical Vacheron Constantin design from 1972. Fratello describes the reference 33172 as a 2013 reissue, with an unusual long, angled silhouette and proportions based on the golden ratio. Its 25 × 47 mm white-gold case is only 8.62 mm thick, making it a shaped dress watch rather than a conventional round everyday model.
Weppelink distinguishes a silver chevron-dial version limited to 40 pieces from an unlimited version with a gray satin sunburst chevron dial and pink-gold hands. Both are associated with hand-wound caliber 1003, which the article says is 1.64 mm thick. Fratello characterizes examples as scarce on the pre-owned market; it gives no current availability or verified market price.
4. Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955: a chronograph with sculptural lugs
Launched in 2015 as a modern interpretation of the 1955 reference 6087, the Cornes de Vache gets its name from its distinctive “cow-horn” lugs. The shape gives the chronograph a recognizable profile without relying on an oversized case. Fratello’s described launch version has a 38.5 mm platinum case and caliber 1142.

The article reports that caliber 1142 runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and has a 48-hour power reserve. It also notes later pink-gold and stainless-steel variants. Fratello said in March 2025 that the brand offered pink-gold and steel versions; its article does not establish whether those remain in the catalog now.

The 222 takes its design cues from Vacheron Constantin’s 1977 integrated-bracelet watch, designed by Jorg Hysek. The modern revival first appeared in full gold in 2022; a stainless-steel version returned in 2025. Fratello describes that steel watch with a 37 mm case, blue dial and gold Maltese cross.

Weppelink points to the modern movement’s 28,800-vibrations-per-hour rate and quick-set date as useful differences. The 222 is the pick in this group for someone drawn to vintage integrated-bracelet proportions, rather than a complication or a shaped case.
How to choose among the five
- For an unconventional time display: choose the American 1921 and its rotated dial.
- For a high complication in a sports-watch format: the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin combines the integrated bracelet with a perpetual calendar.
- For an unusual dress-watch silhouette: the 1972 Prestige has the most visibly asymmetric case.
- For a chronograph: the Cornes de Vache pairs that function with its signature lug shape.
- For a historically rooted integrated-bracelet watch: the 222 carries the clearest link to the 1970s sports-watch design.
These distinctions describe the models, not a universal ranking. Fratello itself names the Overseas Dual-Time “Everest” and Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Chronograph as examples it could have included, underscoring that its five are personal favorites rather than an exhaustive shortlist. Current prices, specific reference availability and service considerations should be checked for the precise watch and market before buying; the cited material does not establish present-day prices or a comparative service-cost record.
