Fratello’s five favorite vintage Rolex Datejusts with exotic dials pair unusual surfaces—from tiger-eye stone to woven-looking linen—with specific references and metals. The selection, published May 16, 2025, is curated rather than exhaustive; its euro price ranges are dated estimates, not current market quotes.
What makes these Datejust dials different?
The Datejust launched in 1945 and displays the date in a window at 3 o’clock. Rolex identifies the Cyclops lens and Jubilee bracelet as emblematic features of the line. These five vintage examples stand out for what is on the dial: two use stone, one uses wood, and two rely on surface texture. Rolex’s official Datejust page provides the collection’s historical and design context.
The list reflects Fratello author Jorg Weppelink’s personal five picks, not every unusual Datejust dial. It does not include other dial types such as Jubilee, Buckley, palm-leaf, or meteorite.

1. Tiger-eye, ref. 1601/8
The tiger-eye dial’s brown stripes give this yellow-gold Datejust a distinctly 1970s look. Fratello describes the dial as a stone surface without hour or minute markers, making the natural pattern the focus. The broader ref. 1601 run is given as 1959–1977; standard examples have a 36 mm case and pie-pan dial. Fratello notes that caliber 1565 was replaced by caliber 1575 in 1965. Its May 2025 estimate for the tiger-eye ref. 1601/8 was a little over €20,000 to about €35,000 depending on condition.
2. Burl wood, ref. 16019
This rare white-gold configuration combines a dark brown burl-wood dial with an Oyster bracelet whose center links are polished. The 160xx series ran from 1977 to 1988, according to Fratello, and the quickset-date caliber 3035 was a key update for the series. Fratello estimated the ref. 16019 at around €90,000–€100,000 in May 2025; that historical estimate should not be read as a current asking or selling price.

3. Linen, ref. 1601
A linen dial uses a fine crosshatch pattern to evoke woven cloth rather than a literal textile surface. Fratello says linen dials appear mainly in Datejust 16xx and 160xx references, most often in silver, with gray also used. Unlike the stone examples here, linen is described as relatively easy to find. The ref. 1601 estimate in May 2025 was roughly €4,000–€6,000.
4. Malachite, ref. 1601/8
Malachite gives the Datejust a vivid green stone dial, most often in 1970s yellow-gold ref. 1601/8 examples. As with classic stone dials, the surface is left without hour markers or a minute track. Fratello’s May 2025 estimate was €40,000–€80,000.

5. Tapestry, ref. 16014
The tapestry dial offers texture rather than stone or wood. Fratello shows gray and silver versions of ref. 16014, both with fluted white-gold bezels, and presents them as textured alternatives to linen. Its estimate in May 2025 was €4,500–€6,500.

How to compare exotic-dial Datejusts
- Start with the exact combination. A dial type alone does not identify the watch: note the reference, case metal, and bracelet as well as the dial.
- Distinguish material from texture. Tiger-eye and malachite are stone; burl is wood; linen and tapestry describe patterned or textured appearances.
- Check the dial layout. Fratello says the classic stone dials omit hour markers and minute tracks, while its linen and tapestry examples are textured alternatives.
- Assess condition before comparing prices. The tiger-eye range explicitly varies with condition, and the other figures are estimates rather than guaranteed values for every example.
- Use the figures as dated context. The cited article provides May 2025 estimates, not live listings, completed-sale data, or a market-wide pricing study. A current valuation needs recent evidence for the same reference, metal, dial, and condition.
