The list is an editorial selection—not a ranking of the five rarest or most valuable Turtles. Its first four choices emphasize historical importance; the King Turtle is the author’s wild card, informed by market price and collectability at the time of publication.
“Turtle” refers to the rounded cushion case, which resembles a shell from above. Fratello credits Ikuo Tokunaga with designing the first watch now known by that nickname. Here is what distinguishes each reference, in the order Fratello selected them.
How to read Fratello’s five picks
Fratello published its selection on March 24, 2023. The five references are the 6306-7000/1, 6309-7040/9, SRP777, SRPC35K1 Mini Turtle and SRPE05 King Turtle. The choices make most sense as milestones in the Turtle family rather than interchangeable versions of one watch: two vintage references, a modern return, a smaller-format branch and a feature-upgraded modern model.

1. Seiko 6306-7000/1: the Japanese-market vintage pick
Fratello presents the 6306-7000/1 as the first Japanese-market Turtle selection and calls it a grail for many collectors. It characterizes the 6306 as rarer than the 6309, but the article supplies no production or population figures, so that is an editorial assessment rather than a quantified rarity claim.
The 6306A movement has 21 jewels and hacking seconds, which let the wearer stop the seconds hand when setting the time. Fratello contrasts it with the 6309A’s 17 jewels and lack of hacking. The 6306 also has an English/Japanese kanji day wheel; most 6309 examples have an international day wheel. The article gives the 6306 a roughly 45 mm cushion case and a stated 150 m water-resistance rating.

2. Seiko 6309-7040/9: the international-market vintage pick
The 6309-7040/9 represents the international vintage side of Fratello’s list. The article says the 6309-7040 was used in Japan and elsewhere, while the 6309-7049 was intended for North America. It describes the 6309 family as remaining in production until 1988.
Fratello frames the 6309 as a more accessible alternative to the 6306, with much of the same design and appeal. For a pre-owned example, however, condition and originality matter: the article cautions that unofficial aftermarket parts may have replaced original components. Check the watch’s parts and service history rather than assuming a worn or polished example is original.
Rank #3
- PADI SPECIAL EDITION: Men's Prospex Sea diver featuring a PADI Special Edition design with a stainless-steel case and ceramic bezel display.
- AUTOMATIC MOVEMENT: Seiko 4R36 automatic movement offers manual winding, 24 jewels, day/date display, stop-second function, and approximately 41 hours of power reserve.
- 200M DIVER'S WATER RESISTANCE: Rated to 200 meters / 660 feet for diving, with a screw-down crown and screw case back.
- SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL: Sapphire crystal with magnifier and inner anti-reflective coating provides durable dial protection and improved readability.
- DIVER-READY FEATURES: 45mm stainless-steel case, unidirectional rotating bezel, LumiBrite hands, indexes and bezel, plus a secure three-fold clasp with extender.
3. Seiko Prospex SRP777: the modern Turtle return
Seiko announced the SRP777 in 2015, and sales began in 2016, according to Fratello. It retains much of the 1970s Turtle appearance but updates the stated water resistance to 200 m and uses the 4R36 movement. Changes from the vintage look include Prospex dial marking, revised applied indices, a different crown shape and a changed seconds-hand detail.
Among these five, the SRP777 is the clearest bridge between the old and new: it brings the familiar full-size Turtle design into the modern Prospex line without being identical to the vintage models.
Rank #4
4. Seiko Prospex SRPC35K1 Mini Turtle: the smaller option
Introduced in 2017, the Mini Turtle is the choice for someone who wants the family’s rounded case design in a smaller format. Fratello describes its case as a little over 42 mm, compared with roughly 45 mm for the full-size Turtle. That makes it the smaller-case alternative, not a guarantee that it will feel comfortable on every wrist.
It also differs in layout and details: the crown sits at 3 o’clock, the display is date-only, and the date has a magnifier. It uses the 4R35 movement. These differences make it a Turtle-family design with its own proportions and dial arrangement, rather than simply a scaled-down classic.

Seiko Boutique UK’s SRPE05K1 product sheet lists a 45.0 mm diameter, 47.7 mm case length, 13.2 mm thickness and 22.0 mm lug width. It specifies 20 bar water resistance, sapphire crystal with a magnifier, automatic 4R36 movement and a stated 41-hour power reserve. These are manufacturer-retailer specifications, not claims about comfort or performance in actual use. See Seiko Boutique UK’s SRPE05K1 product specifications.

Which Seiko Turtle from this list should you consider?
- For the vintage Japanese-market distinction: start with the 6306-7000/1, especially if hacking seconds and the kanji day wheel matter to you.
- For a vintage Turtle with broader international-market context: consider the 6309-7040/9, and verify originality and service history on any used example.
- For the classic full-size look in a modern Prospex watch: the SRP777 is Fratello’s modern revival pick.
- For a smaller case: the SRPC35K1 Mini Turtle is the family’s smaller-format option in this selection.
- For the specified modern upgrades: the SRPE05 combines the Turtle case with a sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel insert.
Fratello’s list is useful for understanding the family’s design history and differences, but it does not establish current prices or availability. Those can vary by market and over time; the article’s market commentary reflects its March 2023 publication, not a current quote. Seiko product specifications likewise do not establish present stock in every region.
