Its Labormatic makes the proposition tangible: a distinctive seven-part rounded case, a crown at 12 o’clock and a disc-led time display. The company describes this as Italian creativity joined to Swiss precision; its own account places concept work in London and engineering, development and production in Switzerland.
Who founded Gagà Laboratorio?
Ruben Tomella began Gagà Laboratorio in 2020, drawing on his experience with Swiss watchmaking through Manufacture Gagà SA. He had spent two decades leading the Gagà Milano brand before turning to a new watchmaking project focused on design. The company’s official history traces that origin, while its People and Vision page identifies Tomella as founder.
Tomella partnered with Mo Coppoletta, a London-based Italian artist and designer who serves as Gagà Laboratorio’s Art Director. Coppoletta’s role is central to the brand’s visual identity: the watches are conceived as designed objects, not merely conventional watches decorated with unusual colors or materials.
Where does the brand’s Italian-Swiss identity come from?
“Italian design, Swiss precision” is the company’s positioning, rather than a neutral certification or independent assessment of accuracy. In the brand’s account, Coppoletta develops the creative concept in his London studio, while research and development, prototyping and production take place in Switzerland with partners in Ticino. The company says its watches are Swiss Made; its production description is available on its People and Vision page.

An October 2024 MONOCHROME interview also quotes Tomella describing assembly in Ticino and the use of a La Joux-Perret movement. Neither the brand materials nor the interview cited here establish chronometer certification or independently measured accuracy, so “Swiss precision” should be read as brand identity and manufacturing context—not a specific performance rating.
What makes the Labormatic distinctive?
Presented in 2024, Labormatic is Gagà Laboratorio’s inaugural collection and the clearest expression of its design language. The company links its design to post-war Italian design, while the case and display depart from the familiar round watch with a central set of hands. Its name combines “Labor,” the artist’s work, and “Matic,” the mechanics: the company describes the laboratory as both an artist’s studio and a mechanic’s workshop.

- Seven-part rounded case: a segmented construction that gives the watch a recognizable outline.
- Crown at 12 o’clock: positioned at the top of the case rather than at the customary 3 o’clock.
- Disc-led display: hours are shown digitally, with analog minutes and a central seconds indication on the Azzurro. Rather than relying on the potentially ambiguous label “jumping hours,” it is clearer to describe how the display presents time.
The collection page explains the design and current offerings at The Timepieces. The brand’s homepage presents Cinquanta, Bauhaus, Champagne and Azzurro as distinct visual directions: Bauhaus draws on the German movement, Champagne pairs expressive styling with Bauhaus restraint, and Azzurro is presented as a pastel-colored companion to Cinquanta. The lineup can change, so these names describe the editions shown in the brand’s current presentation, not a guaranteed exhaustive range. Revolution Watch’s September 2025 interview likewise identifies the four editions.
Azzurro: one edition’s published specifications
The Azzurro offers a concrete example of how the Labormatic’s unusual styling is paired with conventional mechanical-watch specifications. These figures are published by Gagà Laboratorio, not independently tested results.

Specifications and the live product listing are on the official Azzurro page. A 42 mm diameter and 13.30 mm thickness are useful starting points for judging fit, but wrist comfort depends on more than diameter; trying the watch on is preferable where possible. The disc layout is also a practical consideration: prospective buyers should check whether the indications are easy to read at a glance for them.

Labormatic’s appeal depends heavily on whether its visual character and display suit the wearer. Before choosing an edition, consider these points:

- Fit: compare the published case dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable, then try the Labormatic on if you can.
- Legibility: inspect the hour discs and minute indication in person or in clear product imagery; an unconventional display may not suit every reading habit.
- Water use: use the Azzurro’s published 50 m rating as a specification, not a promise about every edition or every water activity. Check the current model documentation for intended use.
- Service and warranty: confirm current terms and the route to service for your country before purchase.
- Price and access: check the price in your market, taxes, stock and whether a local authorized retailer can supply or service the watch.
The brand displayed CHF 3,900 for the Azzurro, and the collection page showed listed entries from CHF 3,900 to CHF 4,000, when accessed in 2026. Those are live displayed prices, not permanent or globally applicable prices; taxes, regional availability and stock may differ. Check the current Azzurro listing and collection page for the model and market you are considering.
Gagà Laboratorio advertises a three-year international warranty that can be renewed for a lifetime through The Clab. Eligibility and terms matter, so read the brand’s current warranty information on its homepage before relying on that coverage.

A design-led proposition, not a proven performance ranking
The Labormatic is most compelling as a clearly authored design: Coppoletta’s visual concept, Tomella’s watchmaking venture and the unconventional case and display give the collection a coherent identity. The Azzurro’s listed movement, reserve and construction details provide a useful technical baseline, but the available sources do not establish standardized comparative tests or direct competitor specifications. That makes it sensible to judge it by its fit, readability, design and verified local ownership terms rather than claims of technical superiority.
