Samsung announced the watch on July 9, 2025, and U.S. sales began July 25, 2025. The useful question now is whether LTE is worth its added cost and carrier requirements.
What the FCC approval meant
Before an LTE device can be sold in the United States, its radio equipment must meet applicable Federal Communications Commission requirements. A reported certification for Galaxy Watch8 LTE models suggested that Samsung had advanced the cellular hardware through a regulatory step. It did not announce the watch, set a retail date, or guarantee availability through any particular carrier.
Secondary reporting in May 2025 said LTE Galaxy Watch8 models had passed FCC certification. The exact FCC grant record and identifiers were not independently verified in that reporting, so the details should be treated as reported rather than as a direct reading of an FCC record. The Commission’s public search portal can be used to look up filings.
FCC approval alone does not establish final pricing, carrier rollout, regional LTE-band compatibility, or whether every size and color will be sold in every market. Samsung controls its announcement and sales plans separately from the regulatory process.

What the filing reportedly revealed
Coverage of the filing attributed LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, and wireless-charging information to the certification materials. One report also described a 10-watt charging capability. These are details reported about the filing, not a complete, independently verified account of the FCC record; see Android Authority’s coverage.
The filing was not a test of everyday battery life, cellular reliability, health-tracking accuracy, comfort, or app quality. Those aspects cannot be inferred from radio certification.

What LTE adds—and what it still depends on
LTE lets the watch connect to cellular service when it is away from its paired phone, enabling functions such as calls, messages, and connected services on outings or workouts. Samsung describes this as useful when the phone is not on hand in its explanation of Galaxy Watch LTE.

It is not a fully independent phone replacement. Cellular use requires a compatible carrier, a supported smartwatch plan, and eSIM provisioning; coverage and supported models vary by carrier and region. Some setup, apps, and Samsung Health or Galaxy AI functions may also depend on a compatible Samsung phone, Samsung account, or other service requirements. Check both the carrier’s current device support and Samsung’s compatibility information before choosing LTE.
LTE or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: which should you choose?
Choose LTE if you regularly leave your phone behind
- You run, cycle, commute, or take short outings without carrying your phone and want calls or messages to remain available.
- You have confirmed that your carrier supports the specific watch and are comfortable with its smartwatch-plan charges.
- The added cellular flexibility is worth both the higher purchase price and the possibility of greater battery use while cellular service is active.
Choose Bluetooth/Wi-Fi if your phone is usually with you
- You want to avoid a recurring carrier charge and can use the watch through its phone connection or Wi-Fi when available.
- Your carrier does not support the watch, or you have not confirmed eSIM activation and regional compatibility.
- You value the lower purchase price more than phone-free connectivity.
For a like-for-like standard Watch8 size, Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet shows a $50 LTE premium. That is separate from any carrier-plan cost. LTE use can also consume more battery than relying on a nearby phone; actual battery life depends on usage and conditions.
Specifications confirmed after launch
Samsung’s official series materials describe Wear OS powered by Samsung, One UI 8 Watch, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo positioning. Samsung corporate documentation lists the Exynos W1000 platform, Wear OS 6, and batteries rated at 325mAh for the 40mm model and 435mAh for the 44mm model. Those capacities are specification figures, not a guarantee of runtime. See Samsung’s series specifications and corporate documentation.

Alternatives within Samsung’s lineup
- Galaxy Watch8 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: The straightforward lower-cost choice if your phone stays nearby.
- Galaxy Watch8 Classic LTE: A distinct design option for buyers who specifically want the Classic model and its rotating bezel, at a higher U.S. MSRP.
- Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025 LTE: A more expensive, premium-positioned alternative; the June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists it at $649.99.
- Galaxy Watch7 LTE: A potential value alternative if available at a discount and you do not need Watch8-specific design or features.
Check compatibility especially carefully if you use an iPhone; do not assume Galaxy Watch features and setup work the same way as they do with a compatible Samsung phone.
