Garmin Enduro 3: Power, Precision and Endurance in One GPS Watch

Garmin Enduro 3 is built for activities that outlast ordinary smartwatches. Its 51 mm, 63-gram solar design combines very long GPS runtimes, multiband navigation, detailed maps and an outdoor-readable MIP screen. It is an excellent fit for ultrarunners, trail runners, hikers, backpackers and adventure racers who value operating time and route confidence above smartwatch conversation features or a compact case.

What the Enduro 3 is designed to do

Enduro 3 is a purpose-built endurance instrument rather than a conventional lifestyle smartwatch. Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales Dan Bartel described it as being made for “an ultrarunner, adventure racer, thru-hiker or somewhere in between.” The design priorities are clear: carry less weight, navigate for longer and keep recording when an event or trip runs into a second day.

The watch retains Garmin’s broad sports ecosystem, onboard music, Garmin Pay, phone notifications and Connect IQ apps. It does not have cellular service, a microphone or a speaker, so calls and voice-assistant interactions are not part of the experience.

Battery life and what solar really changes

Garmin’s owner manual gives mode-specific maximums, not one universal battery figure:

Garmin Enduro 3 GPS Smartwatch 51mm Solar Sapphire, Ultra Battery Life, Mapping, Built-in LED Flashlight, Carbon Gray DLC Titanium, Black UltraFit Nylon Strap (Renewed)
  • Designed for ultra-endurance athletes, with a lightweight design weighing just 63 g to help improve performance
  • Take on the elements with a titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and built-in LED flashlight to light up the dark; UltraFit nylon band provides long-distance comfort - even in punishing conditions
  • Up to 90 days of battery life in smartwatch mode (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and 320 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) - all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
  • Preloaded TopoActive maps are optimized for outdoor activities to help keep your adventures on track
  • Dynamic round-trip routing allows you to set a target destination for your run, bike or hike; Enduro 3 will continually adjust the route to get you back home on schedule
Mode Garmin-rated maximum Qualification
Smartwatch Up to 36 days Up to 90 days with solar under Garmin’s stated solar conditions
GPS only Up to 120 hours Up to 320 hours with solar under Garmin’s stated solar conditions
All-satellite systems Up to 80 hours Up to 144 hours with solar
All-satellite systems plus multiband Up to 60 hours Up to 90 hours with solar

Those figures assume Garmin’s test conditions. The manual says actual life varies with wrist heart rate, phone notifications, GPS use, internal sensors and connected sensors. Solar is therefore a boost to a selected mode, not a guarantee that the watch will never need charging.

Why personal results can be much lower

In Tom’s Guide testing in London, the Enduro 3 lasted 17 days on its first charge and 18–19 days on a second charge while the reviewer ran frequently and received relatively little solar exposure. The reviewer averaged about 30K lux-hours of light per day, compared with Garmin’s 150K lux-hour basis for its solar estimates. That test demonstrates why Garmin’s “with solar” numbers should be read as best-case mode estimates rather than an expected gain for every wrist.

Hardware, display and durability

Specification Enduro 3
Case diameter 51 mm
Display 1.4-inch, 280 × 280-pixel MIP
Lens Sapphire glass
Bezel and case back Titanium
Water rating 10 ATM
Weight 63 grams including strap (Garmin announcement, 2024)

The memory-in-pixel display is less visually vivid than an AMOLED panel, but it is highly legible in direct sunlight and supports the watch’s low-power mission. Sapphire glass and titanium help it tolerate scrapes on rock, trail and travel. The 51 mm case is substantial: it provides room for a large battery and readable data fields, but it will feel oversized on smaller wrists.

Navigation and training tools

Maps and route planning

Preloaded TopoActive maps provide terrain context without requiring a phone during a route. Dynamic round-trip routing can create a course to a chosen distance and return you to the start, useful when weather, daylight or fatigue changes a plan. The watch is intended to keep navigation available deep into long outings rather than merely display a breadcrumb line for a few hours.

GNSS precision

Enduro 3 supports multiband GNSS and Garmin’s SatIQ technology. SatIQ can select an appropriate satellite mode to balance positioning performance and power use, while multiband reception is designed to improve tracking in difficult environments such as urban canyons, dense vegetation and mountainous terrain.

Endurance-focused metrics

Grade-adjusted pace helps translate a hilly effort into a comparable flat-running effort. Trail-run VO2 max adds a trail-specific view of fitness rather than treating every run as road running. Together with Garmin’s training and recovery features, these tools make the watch relevant to structured ultramarathon preparation as well as navigation.

How accurate are GPS and heart-rate readings?

Independent testing has found strong overall GPS performance and generally good agreement between the optical heart-rate sensor and reference measurements. Wareable described GPS results as solid, while Tom’s Guide also reported very good GPS and heart-rate results in normal use.

Optical heart rate is not infallible. Tom’s Guide observed missed spikes and dips during short 30-second efforts, and Wareable reported occasional disagreement with a Polar H10 chest strap during intense or rapidly changing efforts. For intervals, race pacing or any analysis where a few seconds matter, pair the Enduro 3 with a compatible chest strap. For steady runs, hikes and long aerobic work, the wrist sensor is generally suitable.

Enduro 3 versus Fenix 8

The key difference is not the presence or absence of Garmin’s core sports functions; both families target serious training and navigation. The Enduro 3 instead gives priority to battery endurance and a lightweight-for-size build.

Garmin Enduro™ 2 – Ultraperformance Watch
  • The 1.4” Power Sapphire lens harvests the sun’s energy, giving you more power and time between charges
  • AutoSelect mode uses SatIQ technology to dynamically determine the GPS mode necessary to maximize battery life without compromising positional accuracy
  • The rugged, lightweight design won’t slow you down, and the light UltraFit nylon band provides a secure, comfortable fit during all of your activities
  • Navigation tools help you find your way with preloaded TopoActive and ski maps
  • A superbright LED flashlight (twice as bright as the fēnix 7X multisport GPS watch) offers variable intensities with a strobe that matches your running cadence; red safety light mode helps you keep an eye on your immediate surroundings while running at night
Consideration Enduro 3 Fenix 8 comparison
Battery focus Longer endurance, with solar-rated figures up to 90 smartwatch days and 320 GPS hours in specified modes Choose the exact Fenix 8 size and display; battery varies by model and mode
Display Power-saving MIP, especially clear in bright sun AMOLED versions look brighter and more colorful in many indoor and low-light conditions
Voice hardware No microphone or speaker Fenix 8 adds microphone and speaker for supported interactions
Diving No dive capability Fenix 8 includes dive-oriented capability
Core sports and maps TopoActive maps, routing, multiband GNSS, SatIQ and extensive training tools Comparable Garmin sports and navigation breadth, depending on model
Launch price $899 in the United States (Tom’s Guide, 2024 review) Varies by Fenix 8 size, material and display configuration

Choose Enduro 3 when replacing a charge or preserving GPS runtime is more important than calls, voice controls, AMOLED presentation or diving. Choose Fenix 8 when those smartwatch and dive features justify accepting a different battery, size or price combination.

Who should buy the Enduro 3?

Strong matches

  • Ultrarunners needing GPS recording through very long races.
  • Trail runners who want maps, grade-aware pacing and trail-specific fitness data.
  • Hikers and backpackers planning multi-day routes away from reliable charging.
  • Adventure racers who need navigation and sensor support in one rugged watch.
  • Sun-exposed users who can take advantage of solar charging and prefer a display that excels outdoors.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a smaller or lighter-feeling case than 51 mm.
  • An AMOLED screen is more important than maximum battery life.
  • You expect to make calls, use a voice assistant or play audio through the watch itself.
  • You need dedicated dive functions.
  • Your training depends on precise short-interval heart-rate changes and you do not want to wear a chest strap.

Verdict: is Garmin Enduro 3 worth it?

For endurance athletes and backcountry users, yes. Enduro 3 brings unusually long operating time, dependable navigation hardware, useful maps and a durable 51 mm package without the weight penalty its size might suggest. Its limitations are deliberate: MIP instead of AMOLED, no microphone or speaker, no cellular connection and no dive mode. If your priority is recording and navigating for hours or days, those compromises are easier to accept; if your priority is smartwatch interaction, compact wear or vivid graphics, Fenix 8 or an AMOLED alternative is the better direction.
