Garmin brought AMOLED and solar-display options together under the fēnix name, but that does not make every Epix obsolete or every owner due for an upgrade. The fēnix 8’s clearest additions include a built-in speaker and microphone, voice functions, and dive support. Whether those matter depends on which Epix generation, edition, and size you own.
For a useful like-for-like reference, Garmin lists both the 47 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED and 47 mm epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire for up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. Its always-on estimates are up to 7 days for the fēnix 8 and up to 6 days for the Epix Pro. The differences are real, but not a universal reason to replace a watch that already meets your needs.

What Garmin actually changed
Before the fēnix 8, Garmin’s high-end outdoor lineup made shoppers choose between two identities:
- fēnix: a premium multisport watch family that includes solar-display models;
- Epix: a related premium outdoor-watch line associated with AMOLED models.
With the fēnix 8, Garmin put AMOLED and solar-display choices under the fēnix name. Garmin announced AMOLED models in 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes, and solar-display models in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes. This makes “Epix obsolete” a reasonable shorthand for product-line positioning, not a claim that existing Epix watches are unusable or automatically worth replacing.

The exact comparison matters: “Epix” can mean different generations, sizes, and editions. Garmin’s comparison cited here is specifically between fēnix 8 and epix Pro (Gen 2) variants; it does not establish the same differences for every Epix model.
The fēnix 8 is more than an Epix renamed
Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement describes AMOLED and solar-display options alongside hardware and functions including a built-in speaker and microphone, voice functions, an LED flashlight, and support for scuba and apnea diving to a stated maximum depth of 40 meters. Which features matter in a comparison depends on the exact watches being compared.
AMOLED and solar are now choices within one family
The main buying decision is no longer simply “Epix or fēnix?” It is which display and configuration fit your needs.
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| fēnix 8 AMOLED | People who prefer an AMOLED display and want a choice of 43 mm, 47 mm, or 51 mm case | Battery estimates vary by case size and whether the display is always on |
| fēnix 8 Solar | People interested in a solar-display option in a 47 mm or 51 mm case | It is a different display and battery approach from AMOLED; the models are not interchangeable |
Garmin’s announcement and product information describe different sizes and display options, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming every fēnix 8 has the same hardware or battery performance.
Speaker, microphone, and voice functions
Garmin describes the fēnix 8 as having a built-in speaker and microphone and voice functions. Its comparison lists making calls and sending texts via voice for the fēnix 8, but not for the compared epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire. Feature availability can depend on the supported function and connected phone; do not assume the watch is a standalone smartphone.
LED flashlight and dive support
Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement highlights a built-in LED flashlight and support for scuba and apnea diving to a stated maximum depth of 40 meters. These may be useful reasons to consider the fēnix 8 if you will use them. Garmin’s comparison lists an LED flashlight for both the 47 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED and the compared epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire, so the flashlight alone is not a difference in that specific comparison.

A stated maximum depth is a product specification, not a replacement for dive training, planning, or equipment appropriate to the activity.
Battery life: compare the exact models
Battery estimates depend on watch size and settings. Garmin’s current comparison gives this like-for-like reference for 47 mm AMOLED models:

| 47 mm AMOLED model | Smartwatch mode | Always-on display |
|---|---|---|
| fēnix 8 | Up to 16 days | Up to 7 days |
| epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire | Up to 16 days | Up to 6 days |
These are Garmin estimates from its product comparison, not independent test results. The figures do not show a large smartwatch-mode difference for these two particular models.
Garmin’s fēnix 8 Series Owner’s Manual gives these AMOLED estimates by size:
| fēnix 8 AMOLED size | Smartwatch mode, wrist gesture | Always-on display |
|---|---|---|
| 43 mm | Up to 10 days | Up to 4 days |
| 47 mm | Up to 16 days | Up to 7 days |
| 51 mm | Up to 29 days | Up to 13 days |
Garmin’s manual says: “The actual battery life depends on the features enabled on your watch, such as wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors, and connected sensors.” Treat the figures as manufacturer estimates rather than a promise of individual real-world performance.
Who should buy the fēnix 8?
Consider the fēnix 8 if its specific display, case size, or functions suit your needs. Garmin’s announcement describes several sizes and display options, and its comparison identifies voice calling and texting functions for the fēnix 8 that are not listed for the compared Epix Pro.

Should an Epix Pro owner upgrade?
For many owners, the answer is only if a fēnix 8 feature or configuration solves a real need. In Garmin’s 47 mm comparison, the fēnix 8 AMOLED and epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire share a listed maximum of 16 days in smartwatch mode. Garmin also lists mapping, Pulse Ox, its ECG app, Garmin Pay, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness, training status, touchscreen, and LED flashlight for both compared watches.
The fēnix 8 comparison lists making calls and sending texts via voice for the fēnix 8, but not for the compared Epix. Garmin also describes dive support for the fēnix 8. Those functions may make upgrading worthwhile if you will use them. The battery comparison alone is not a strong reason to upgrade from the compared 47 mm Epix Pro.
Before deciding, identify your Epix generation, size, and edition. Garmin’s comparison is not a universal comparison covering every Epix model, and your priorities may differ from the listed features.
Is a discounted Epix Pro still worth considering?
It may be, if the exact Epix Pro configuration has the features you want and is available at a price you consider worthwhile. Check the precise edition, size, seller, warranty, and return terms before buying. Current prices and stock can change, and the research does not establish a guaranteed price or availability.

Putting AMOLED and solar-display choices under the fēnix name gives shoppers a single family to compare. It also leaves buyers with configuration choices: display type, case size, and features still matter.

The consolidation does not make every upgrade transformational. In Garmin’s specific 47 mm comparison, smartwatch-mode battery estimates match, always-on estimates differ by one day, and many core features are listed for both watches. Owners should compare their exact model with the fēnix 8 configuration they are considering.
Verdict
Garmin fēnix 8 makes the Epix less necessary as a separate product-line identity, not obsolete as a functioning watch. Garmin brought AMOLED and solar-display options into the fēnix family and added features including speaker and microphone hardware, voice functions, and dive support.
For the compared 47 mm AMOLED models, Garmin lists up to 16 days of smartwatch-mode battery life for both the fēnix 8 and epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire. Upgrade if the fēnix 8’s particular functions or configuration matter to you; otherwise, an Epix Pro that meets your needs can remain a sensible watch to keep.
FAQ
Is the Garmin Epix discontinued or obsolete?
Garmin has brought AMOLED options under the fēnix name, but that does not make existing Epix watches unusable. “Epix” covers different generations and configurations, so compare the exact watch before deciding whether to upgrade.
How does fēnix 8 battery life compare with the 47 mm Epix Pro?
Garmin lists up to 16 days in smartwatch mode for both the 47 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED and the epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire. Its always-on estimates are up to 7 days for the fēnix 8 and up to 6 days for the Epix Pro. These are Garmin estimates.
Should an Epix Pro owner upgrade to the fēnix 8?
Upgrade if you need functions such as the fēnix 8’s listed voice calling and texting or its dive support, or want a different size or display configuration. Many listed mapping, GPS, training, and health features overlap in Garmin’s 47 mm comparison, so an upgrade is not automatic.
