Garmin announced the original fēnix 8 on August 27, 2024, with U.S. launch suggested retail prices starting at $999.99. That is the launch MSRP baseline, not a verified current street price. The main choice is between AMOLED models in 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes and solar-charging models in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes.
The fēnix 8 is a multisport GPS watch with training, mapping, health, music, and safety features, plus a microphone and speaker and a built-in LED flashlight. Configuration, regional availability, phone compatibility, subscriptions, and software can affect what is available. The original fēnix 8 is separate from the fēnix 8 Pro, whose LTE and satellite capabilities should not be attributed to this model.

AMOLED or Solar: which fēnix 8 should you choose?
AMOLED
Choose AMOLED if a bright, colorful display is your priority. Garmin describes it as offering increased brightness, color, and detail. It comes in 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes, so buyers can choose case size as well as display type. [c001]
Solar
Choose a solar model if solar charging and its outdoor-oriented display appeal to you. The solar models come in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes and use a Power Sapphire lens to harvest solar energy. Solar battery figures are manufacturer estimates and depend on the stated light conditions; they are not a guarantee of indefinite operation. [c001]

Later Garmin announcements provide dated examples of software updates: a May 22, 2025 update included breathing variations and a rucking activity, while an August 28, 2025 announcement described running tolerance and Garmin Triathlon Coach plans for select watches. These announcements do not establish a complete current feature inventory for every fēnix 8 model or firmware version. [c004][c005]
