What both watches offer
Garmin lists a substantial shared running and multisport foundation, including training status, wrist-based running power, running dynamics, acute load, training effect, performance condition and VO2 max. Both support multisport activities and connected smartwatch functions. The dossier also identifies AMOLED touchscreen displays and five-button designs on both models.

Forerunner 570: size choice and shared training tools
The 570 comes in 42 mm and 47 mm sizes, making it the only choice in this pair for someone who wants a smaller case. Garmin’s manual specifies 20 mm quick-release bands for the 42 mm model and 22 mm bands for the 47 mm model. Its materials include an aluminum bezel and Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Garmin’s manual rates smartwatch-mode battery life at up to 10 days for the 42 mm model and up to 11 days for the 47 mm model. For context, it estimates up to 18 hours in GPS-only GNSS mode for both sizes, or up to 13 hours (42 mm) and 14 hours (47 mm) in all-systems, multi-band GNSS mode. Music playback and enabled features can reduce runtime; Garmin says actual battery life depends on settings and use.

The 970 is a 47 mm model with a titanium bezel and sapphire lens. Its clearest functional advantage is full-color built-in mapping, with course turn-by-turn directions and dynamic round-trip routing. That makes it the stronger fit for runners or cyclists who want navigation on the watch when exploring unfamiliar routes.
It also has a built-in LED flashlight, an ECG app and additional running metrics. ECG availability may vary by region. Do not treat ECG or other wellness features as diagnosis or treatment.

Metrics that require the HRM 600
Garmin identifies running tolerance, running economy and step speed loss among the 970’s running features. Running economy and step speed loss require a separately sold HRM 600 heart-rate monitor, so they should not be assumed to work from the watch alone. If these metrics matter to you, include the strap in your budget and verify compatibility for your intended setup.
