Garmin’s announcement describes AMOLED models rated for up to 24 days in smartwatch mode and Solar models promoted for potentially unlimited battery life under specified sunlight conditions; these are Garmin estimates, not independent test results.
The lineup comes in 45 mm and 50 mm sizes, with AMOLED or solar-powered display options. Choose AMOLED for a bright color display, or Solar if outdoor light exposure and a less frequent charging routine matter more.
What Garmin announced at CES 2025
Garmin said it would display the Instinct 3 series at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The announcement presented it as a rugged smartwatch range combining either an AMOLED display or a solar-powered display with outdoor navigation, activity, and connected features.
Garmin highlighted a metal-reinforced bezel, a fiber-reinforced polymer case, a scratch-resistant display, and a built-in flashlight across the range. It also described the series as built to MIL-STD 810 for thermal and shock resistance and water-rated to 100 meters. These are manufacturer claims, not results from independent testing.

AMOLED or Solar: which should you choose?
| Option | What Garmin emphasizes | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|
| AMOLED | Bright color display and up to 24 days in smartwatch mode | You prefer a vivid display for everyday use |
| Solar | Solar charging and potentially unlimited battery life under Garmin’s stated light conditions | You spend substantial time outdoors and prioritize endurance |
Both display options are offered in 45 mm and 50 mm sizes, according to Garmin. Check the exact size and display type when comparing listings, since the lineup includes several configurations. The Garmin Instinct 3 GPS smartwatch range is best approached as a choice among display type, case size, and charging routine.
How long does the Garmin Instinct 3 battery last?
Garmin advertised up to 24 days in smartwatch mode for the AMOLED models. Solar models were promoted for potentially unlimited battery life, but Garmin’s estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours outdoors per day in 50,000-lux conditions. Treat these as Garmin’s published estimates, not a promise of real-world results.
Garmin also said the 50 mm Instinct 3 Solar gets more than five times the GPS-mode battery life of the Instinct 2 Solar when solar charging. That is Garmin’s comparison, not an independent test.

Garmin says every Instinct 3 model includes a built-in flashlight with variable intensities, red light, and strobe mode. The announcement also specifies a 100-meter water rating. These manufacturer descriptions do not mean the watch is indestructible or remove the need to follow Garmin’s use and care guidance.
Which Garmin Instinct 3 should you buy?
- Choose AMOLED if a bright color display is your priority and you are comfortable treating the battery figure as Garmin’s estimate.
- Choose Solar if you prioritize solar charging and expect to spend time outdoors in conditions that can support Garmin’s stated light-exposure assumption.
- Choose the case size—45 mm or 50 mm—based on the fit you want, and verify that the listing matches your preferred display type and size.
- Check feature requirements if Garmin Pay, messaging, incident detection, or other connected features are important to you.
At announcement, Garmin listed U.S. suggested retail prices starting at $449.99 for AMOLED and $399.99 for Solar, with ordering scheduled to begin January 10, 2025. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices; check a retailer for current availability and pricing.
