His choices—published by Fratello on February 17, 2021—cover different priorities: premium materials, display legibility, traditional construction, 1980s-inspired looks, and unusual finishing. He also names a sixth watch as a bonus.
What “top five” means here
Nijenbrinks explicitly cautions that his reasons are personal and “not necessarily empirically grounded.” The list therefore works best as a map of priorities rather than a test result. No controlled comparison or published performance statistic establishes one of these references as the best daily G-SHOCK.
All six watches belong to the long-running square family. Casio dates the first G-SHOCK Square to 1983 and identifies the 5000/5600 watches as its classic Square series. Fratello’s Square guide recommends comparing module functionality, construction and materials, while treating color as personal preference.
Gerard’s five picks at a glance
| Pick | What stands out | Best fit for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMW-B5000TB-1 | Titanium case and bracelet, DLC coating, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating | Someone prioritizing premium materials and light, comfortable wear | Nijenbrinks’ comfort assessment is personal; the model was a 2019 limited edition |
| GW-B5600-2 | Classic square platform; the author’s example was modified to a positive display | Daily use when maximum practicality matters more than showing a premium watch | The positive-display modification is specific to his watch, not necessarily the stock reference |
| GW-5000-1JF | Stainless-steel inner case, resin outer case, softer urethane band | Those who value traditional construction and a closer link to the original 1983 design | The JF designation and availability described in the 2021 article should not be treated as current regional information |
| GW-M5610-1 | Red line around the dial and familiar first-Square styling | A straightforward heritage look with solar and radio-controlled timekeeping | Features and regional reference details should be checked before purchase |
| GMW-B5000CS-1 (“Tron”) | Black ion-plated full-metal design with matrix-like laser engraving | Collectors who want distinctive finishing and accept a negative display | It was a 2020 limited edition; its appeal is primarily visual in this list |
1. GMW-B5000TB-1: the premium-material favorite
This is Nijenbrinks’ top choice. He highlights its titanium finish, DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. He also describes it as comfortable, but that is his first-person judgment rather than a measured wear test.
#1 Best Overall
- Iconic G-SHOCK Square Design – The legendary square case that started it all, delivering timeless style and the rugged durability G-SHOCK is known for.
- Shock Resistant & 200M Water Resistant – Built to withstand impacts, swimming, snorkeling, and demanding everyday use.
- Super Illuminator LED Backlight – Bright white LED with afterglow ensures excellent readability in low-light conditions.
- Essential Digital Features – Includes 1/100-second stopwatch, 24-hour countdown timer, multi-function alarm, flash alert, and full auto-calendar.
- Reliable 5-Year Battery Life – Powered by a CR2016 battery for long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance.
The watch’s appeal is easy to define: it keeps the unmistakable Square outline while using materials associated with higher-end watches. Nijenbrinks says the model was a 2019 limited edition and recounts tracking one down after seeing a demonstration. Because that edition is no longer a current product guarantee, buyers should verify condition, provenance and regional availability rather than assume new stock exists.
2. GW-B5600-2: the practical daily beater
Nijenbrinks’ second pick is a GW-B5600-2 modified to use a positive display. He says he dislikes negative displays and reaches for this watch when he does not want to expose the titanium model to harsh activities.
That distinction matters. His modified example should not be read as proof that every stock GW-B5600-2 has the same display configuration. If legibility is your priority, confirm the exact reference and display before ordering; a positive display generally matches the author’s stated preference, while the model designation alone may not describe every market variant or modification.
Rank #2
- Approx. battery life: 2 years on CR2032
- 200-meter water resistance
- LED backlight (Super illuminator); Auto light switch, selectable illumination duration (1.5 seconds or 3 seconds), afterglow
- Display of distance, speed, pace, and other calculated values based on accelerometer, auto/manual lap times, Auto Pause, target alert setting (time, altitude, calories burned) on/off, training display customization (elapsed time, distance, pace, lap time, lap distance lap pace, average pace, speed, average speed, calories burned)
- Training Function
This choice represents a useful daily-wear principle: keep a tough, familiar square for rough work and reserve a more expensive or harder-to-replace piece for less demanding days.
3. GW-5000-1JF: traditional construction in a modern classic
For his third choice, Nijenbrinks points to the GW-5000-1JF’s stainless-steel inner case, resin outer case and softer urethane band. He also sees it as more closely related in construction to the 1983 DW-5000C than many other modern squares.
This is the selection for readers who care about how a watch is built, not only how it looks. The metal inner case adds a traditional structural detail while the resin exterior preserves the protective square profile and the softer band addresses everyday comfort.
Rank #3
- Shock resistant structure protects against impact
- 200 meters water resistance for swimming and snorkeling
- Solar-powered battery charges itself from any light source
- Atomic timekeeping syncs to radio towers for precise accuracy
- LED backlight illuminates the digital display in low light
Fratello’s article described the JF version as Japan-only and gave an approximate historical price. Those details belong to the February 2021 article and are not a current price or availability guide. Check the exact regional reference, warranty and seller status before buying.
4. GW-M5610-1: the clearest visual link to the first Square
Nijenbrinks’ fourth pick is the GW-M5610-1, chosen largely for its appearance. He singles out the red line around the dial as the cue that makes it look close to the first Square.

Fratello’s starter guide identifies this model as solar-powered and radio-controlled. Those functions make it a practical everyday option for someone who wants the classic red-line aesthetic without moving into a special-material or highly decorative limited edition.
Rank #4
Solar charging and radio reception can vary with use, environment and regional configuration. Confirm the specifications for the precise reference sold in your country, especially if a listing uses a similar-looking model number.

The fifth pick is the GMW-B5000CS-1, nicknamed “Tron.” It breaks one of Nijenbrinks’ own general rules: he normally does not prefer negative displays for practical reasons, yet he includes this watch because of its matrix-like laser engraving.
The pattern runs across the black ion-plated case, case back and bracelet, giving the full-metal Square a cohesive, futuristic surface. In other words, the finishing is the point. This is a useful reminder that a daily-wear choice can be emotional or aesthetic even when it sacrifices a feature—such as a preferred display style—that would win in a purely practical comparison.

- Case size (L× W× H): 48.9 × 42.8 × 13.4 mm
- Case and bezel material: Resin / Bio-based resin
- Construction: Shock Resistant | Band: Bio-based resin band
- Weight: 52 g
- Water resistance: 200-meter water resistance
The watch was a 2020 limited edition. Treat the historical release context as part of its identity, not as evidence that current retail stock or pricing is available.
Bonus pick: GMW-B5000D-1
Nijenbrinks adds the GMW-B5000D-1 because stopping at five was difficult. It is a full-metal Square and serves as the straightforward metal alternative to the more specialized titanium and engraved editions discussed above.
The Fratello article’s price for this model is historical. It should not be used as a 2026 buying figure; compare current, region-specific listings and verify that the seller is authorized or reputable.
How the choices translate into buying priorities
Choose materials and comfort
- Select the GMW-B5000TB-1 if titanium, DLC treatment and sapphire are the attraction, while recognizing that comfort is subjective and the edition is limited.
- Consider the GW-5000-1JF if a steel inner case, resin exterior and softer urethane band matter more than exotic finishing.
Choose display legibility
- The author’s stated preference is a positive display, illustrated by his modified GW-B5600-2.
- The GMW-B5000CS-1 is the deliberate exception: its negative display is accepted because the engraved design is more important to him.
Choose heritage styling
- The GW-M5610-1 emphasizes the red-line look associated with the early Square.
- The GW-5000-1JF emphasizes construction lineage and the relationship to the DW-5000C.
Choose distinctive finishing
- The “Tron” GMW-B5000CS-1 is the standout when the case, bracelet and back engraving are the main reason to wear the watch.
- The GMW-B5000D-1 is the cleaner full-metal option when you want metal without the titanium or laser-pattern treatment.
Check functions and exact references
Before purchase, verify whether the specific regional model is solar-powered, radio-controlled or Bluetooth-equipped, and confirm its display type, case material, band and warranty. Similar Square silhouettes can conceal meaningful differences in module and construction.
What this list does—and does not—prove
These watches are not ranked by durability testing, accuracy measurements, comfort trials or ownership-cost data. They are Gerard Nijenbrinks’ personal daily-wear favorites, with reasons that range from practical legibility to historical design and visual novelty. The value of the list is its spread of priorities: it lets you identify which qualities you want before comparing current references and prices.
