What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but only as a phone-connected companion. After you download a trail or area to the AllTrails Android app and load it into Navigate, the Wear OS app can show route progress, activity data and alerts without cellular service. The watch is not a standalone AllTrails navigator: your phone must be present, signed in and running the AllTrails app.
AllTrails requires a watch running Wear OS 3.0 or newer. Its offline maps are downloaded on the phone; AllTrails does not document a supported way to store those maps on the watch for phone-free use.
What works offline—and what does not
| Capability | Offline result | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Continue recording and tracking | Yes | Phone and watch remain part of the setup. |
| Follow a downloaded route | Yes | The map must be downloaded to the phone and loaded into Navigate first. |
| View route progress on the watch | Yes | The watch acts as a companion display and control surface. |
| Wrong-turn notifications | Advertised when a planned route is loaded | Requires the compatible paid offline-map workflow. |
| Find nearby trails | No | Nearby-trail discovery needs service. |
| Download a new map | No | Downloads require an internet connection. |
| Use AllTrails with no phone | No | AllTrails describes the Wear OS app as non-standalone. |
These distinctions matter: “offline” means continuing a prepared session without cellular or internet access, not replacing the phone.
How AllTrails offline navigation works
- Download on the phone: While connected, open a trail, park or area in the Android app and tap its download control. For a custom area, use Explore > search destination > Map > three-dot menu > Download area, position the selection box, then tap Download [number] trails. A custom area can contain up to 500 trails, subject to size, storage and map-provider limits. See AllTrails’ phone-download instructions and custom-area guidance.
- Verify the local copy: Open Saved > Downloads and check the completed download indicator. A favorited or synced trail is not necessarily downloaded. AllTrails explains access to downloads here.
- Load Navigate before leaving service: Open the downloaded map, tap it to load it into Navigate, confirm the route, and tap the green Start button. Then open AllTrails on the watch and confirm that the activity and route information appear. Follow the documented sequence at AllTrails’ navigation guide.
- Test the setup: Simulate lost service with the phone in airplane mode while retaining the phone-watch connection. Reopen the download, verify the route and location, and check watch controls before hiking.
What the watch can display and control
- Activity statistics and route-progress information.
- Estimated mileage remaining on a planned route.
- Pause and resume controls; swipe right and tap the red Pause button.
- A map view with a recenter control.
- Wrong-turn notifications when a planned route is loaded.
- A green completion ring for a set route and a blue line showing the route already traveled. The green ring does not appear when recording without a planned route.
AllTrails presents this as a companion interface, not as an equivalent to a dedicated outdoor watch with independently stored maps.

Requirements and membership
Compatible phone and watch
Use the AllTrails Android app with a watch running Wear OS 3.0 or newer. AllTrails does not publish a complete supported-model list in its cited support article, so check the watch’s installed Wear OS version and the current Play Store listing. The official requirement is documented by AllTrails.
Base, Plus or Peak?
The Wear OS app is available to AllTrails members, including Base users, but offline trail, park and area downloads require Plus or Peak. On AllTrails’ U.S. plans page, prices displayed on August 18, 2026 were $35.99 per year for Plus ($2.99 per month when annual pricing is divided) and $79.99 per year for Peak ($6.67 per month). Prices, taxes, app-store billing, promotions, eligibility and renewal rates can differ; confirm checkout at AllTrails’ plans page. Plus is sufficient when downloaded offline maps are the only premium requirement; Peak is for users who also want its additional planning and mapping tools.

What “offline” does not mean
- No internet during preparation: You cannot create or refresh downloads without connectivity.
- No phone nearby: AllTrails does not promise full navigation when the phone is absent or disconnected.
- No GPS: An offline map is stored data; it does not itself provide a location fix.
- Watch-only map storage: AllTrails documents downloads as accessible through its iOS and Android apps, not as files transferred to Wear OS.
Troubleshooting common failures
The watch says the phone app is required
Open AllTrails on the phone, sign in, confirm Bluetooth and watch connectivity, and reopen AllTrails on the watch. Check that the watch meets Wear OS 3.0. Start from the phone’s downloaded map rather than the watch’s nearby-trail list.
The trail is missing offline
Check Saved > Downloads and the completed indicator. If it was only saved, failed to finish, belongs to another account, or storage is low, free space and download it again while connected. Load it into Navigate before service disappears. AllTrails lists additional offline-map causes at this troubleshooting page.

Who should use this setup?
AllTrails Wear OS suits hikers who already carry an Android phone and want wrist-level statistics, controls, route progress and AllTrails’ trail database. It is a poor fit if the phone must stay home, may die during the hike, or you require maps stored solely on the watch.

Google’s Wear OS offline-map documentation limits offline maps to driving directions, so it is not a like-for-like hiking replacement: Google’s Wear OS guidance. A compatible Garmin outdoor-watch setup is the more natural alternative for phone-independent navigation, although it requires different hardware and workflow. AllTrails documents sending routes to Garmin for Plus and Peak members at this integration page; Garmin’s outdoor mapping product information is available here.

Finish the activity on the watch or phone, reconnect the phone to the internet and allow synchronization before deleting the download. AllTrails’ cited documentation does not quantify final sync timing, battery impact, phone-distance limits or reconnection reliability, so those should not be assumed.
