Its defining detail on the documented C02SS is a retrograde central hand and a side lever that Phillips describes as operating the winding and time-setting functions. Specifications differ by reference, so the name alone does not identify one universal dial layout or case finish.
What makes the Contagiri distinctive?
Giuliano Mazzuoli drew on his interest in automobiles and motor racing to create a watch inspired by dashboard instruments. The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) records four years of research, development and testing before the Contagiri’s 2010 launch, and describes its design as celebrating automobiles through technical innovations. The tachometer theme is more than a printed motif: on the C02SS, the hand arrangement and side control are presented as part of the automotive concept.
How do the C02SS hand and side lever work?
Phillips describes the C02SS as having a retrograde central hand and a side lever styled like a gear shift. In its catalog description, turning the bezel winds the automatic movement or sets the time. A small aperture at six o’clock indicates the selected position: “1” for winding and “2” for setting. This explains the cataloged mechanism, rather than independently verifying operation on every example.
Orologi.it’s 2017 C02SS reference entry calls it a single-hand watch inspired by an automobile rev counter and describes the hand as returning across a 270-degree arc. In other words, the hand travels over part of the dial before jumping back to begin its sweep again.

Why the reference number matters
Published descriptions do not present every Contagiri reference with the same functions or layout. For example, GPHG lists hours and seconds for reference 1010STN, while descriptions of the C02SS emphasize its retrograde hand. These are reference-specific descriptions, not evidence that one watch combines every listed function.

Launch date and historical price
GPHG records the Contagiri’s launch in 2010 and lists CHF 12,500 excluding VAT as the launch price for reference 1010STN. That is a historical launch figure, not a current retail price or estimate of present market value.
What to check when considering an example
Because the records describe different references and a Phillips auction example, identify the exact watch before comparing listings. Ask the seller for clear photographs of the dial, case and reference information, and check that the stated functions match that reference’s documentation.

- Reference and configuration: Confirm the reference number, case material and finish, dial, and hand layout. Do not assume C02SS details apply to 1010STN or vice versa.
- Condition and service: Review the case and crystal condition, whether the mechanism and controls operate as described, and any available service records.
- Included items: Confirm the strap, buckle, papers, box and other accessories actually included in that specific sale. Phillips documents accessories for its auctioned example; that does not establish what accompanies other watches.
- Price and availability: Compare only listings for the same reference and a clearly stated condition. Current authorized-retailer stock and current pricing are not established by the cited model and auction records.
What “hands-on” can—and cannot—mean here
The available documentation supports a design and reference overview, not a firsthand wear assessment.
