Google appeared to restore “OK Google” hotword detection on at least some Wear OS watches in March 2021, after months of reports that the phrase no longer worked. Droid Life confirmed the feature on a TicWatch Pro 3 after app updates, but reports at the time were mixed: this was not proof of a universal fix, and it is not a new 2026 announcement.
What was broken on Wear OS?
The issue was primarily hotword detection: a watch did not respond when its wearer said “OK Google,” particularly when the watch was idle. On some devices, Assistant could still be opened manually, which points to a different failure from the watch failing to recognize the wake phrase.
Reports had circulated for months before the March 2021 update. Droid Life’s February 24 coverage said Google had acknowledged an Issue Tracker report and that Google had told The Verge it was working on a fix. The exact start of the problem is not established. Droid Life’s February 2021 report
What update appeared to fix it?
In a report published March 11, 2021, Droid Life said “OK Google” was working on its TicWatch Pro 3 after updates. The versions noted on that setup were Google app 12.8.4.25 and Wear OS app 2.45.0.358809240. The paired phone also had a Wear OS app update available. The evidence points to app updates rather than a clearly documented watch-firmware release. Because several components updated around the same time, the report did not establish which one caused the recovery or document a formal, universal Google fix. How to check for the fix on the software covered in 2021
The March 2021 instructions apply to the Wear OS software of that period. Current Wear OS releases, Google Assistant availability, Gemini integration and manufacturer interfaces may have different labels or omit the same setting.

- Wake the watch. The report said the hotword needed the watch to be awake; it was not expected to activate it from every fully idle state.
- Check watch app updates. On the watch, open Google Play, tap My Apps, and install available updates, especially for Google and Wear OS.
- Update the phone companion app. Check the paired phone for an available Wear OS app update as well.
- Check hotword detection. On the watch, the reported path was Settings → Personalization → “OK Google” detection. Confirm the setting is enabled if it is present.
- Test again while the watch is awake. Droid Life recommended tilt-to-wake for more practical hands-free use.
If “OK Google” still does not respond
Use the tests below to identify which part is failing before changing settings or resetting the watch.
- Open Assistant manually or use its on-screen trigger. If Assistant works that way, the problem is more likely hotword recognition than the entire Assistant service. If it opens but cannot understand or complete a request, the failure is further along the chain.
- Update the watch and phone apps. Check Google and Wear OS on the watch and the Wear OS companion app on the phone. These components can update independently.
- Make sure the watch is awake. Test after waking the screen. If needed, enable tilt-to-wake where your watch offers it.
- Restart both devices. Restart the watch and paired phone, then test again.
- Check microphone operation. Look for an obstruction or damage, and test speech in a quiet environment. A microphone problem can resemble a hotword software bug.
- Check support and availability for your specific watch. A 2021 recovery does not establish that an older model still supports the same Assistant features in 2026. Availability can depend on the device and its current software.
- Reserve a factory reset for last. A reset may resolve a local configuration problem, but it cannot restore a feature that has been discontinued or disabled on the service side.
Was every Wear OS watch fixed?
No universal fix is established by the available 2021 evidence. Droid Life’s hands-on confirmation was on one TicWatch Pro 3. The community discussion included reports of the feature working on some watches, including a Fossil Gen 5 Carlyle, as well as reports that it still failed on other devices. The story is best read as a historical update: in March 2021, app-related updates appeared to bring the hotword back for some owners. It does not establish current compatibility for every older watch or describe a new fix released in 2026.
