Material 3 Expressive is Google’s Wear OS interface redesign for round watches. It changes scrolling, shape-morphing controls, dynamic color, and glanceable Tiles; Google later identified Pixel Watch 4 as the first smartwatch built to showcase the full design on Wear OS 6. Separately, Google says the Fitbit app became Google Health on May 19, 2026.
What changed on Pixel Watch?
Google says Material 3 Expressive centers the round display. Scrolling animations follow the display’s curvature, lists suggest depth, and interface elements change shape to suit a smaller screen. The redesign also refreshes interactions such as entering a PIN and controlling media with more responsive motion and feedback.

- The watch-face color theme can be applied across the system.
- Buttons can stretch to hug the display, making them easier to tap while using space efficiently.
- Tiles provide glanceable routes to information and actions, such as messaging a favorite contact or starting a workout.
- Motion and responsive feedback make common interactions feel more fluid.
Google’s Wear OS 6 announcement describes the design as centered on the round display and says Pixel devices would receive the updates first later in 2025. Google says Material 3 Expressive is intended to make using a watch more fluid, personal, and glanceable.
What did not change?
Material 3 Expressive, the Wear OS operating-system release, and the Google Health app rebrand are related but separate changes:

| Item | What it means | Timing or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Material 3 Expressive | Visual and interaction design for round displays, including curved scrolling, dynamic color, shape changes, and glanceable buttons and Tiles. | Introduced with Wear OS 6. |
| Wear OS 6 | The platform release carrying the redesign and related system components. | Google said Pixel devices would get updates first later in 2025. |
| Google Health | The Fitbit app’s new brand and app experience. | Google says the change began May 19, 2026. |
Pixel Watch 4 is the first smartwatch Google says was built to showcase the full power of Material 3 Expressive on Wear OS 6. That positioning does not mean other watches cannot receive individual design features, app updates, or Tiles.
How to download or update Google Health (Fitbit)
Update it on an Android phone
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Health, or open the existing Fitbit listing.
- Check that the developer is Google LLC.
- Tap Update or Install.
- Open the app and sign in with the Google Account connected to your Fitbit or Pixel Watch.
Google’s Help Center says the Fitbit app became Google Health beginning May 19, 2026. Most users were expected to receive the change automatically between May 19 and May 26, while manual updating through Google Play or Apple’s App Store was also available. Users with a Fitbit account rather than a Google account need to move that account to Google to use Google Health.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdate the watch-side app
- Open the Play Store on your Pixel Watch or Wear OS watch.
- Open Manage apps, or check for available updates.
- Install pending Fitbit, Google Health, Google, or Wear OS component updates.
- Restart the watch if a new interface does not appear immediately.
- Open Fitbit Today and check the available Tiles.
Google’s Wear OS support instructions explain that watch apps can be installed or updated through Google Play, including from a connected phone.
Do you need Wear OS 6?
Material 3 Expressive was introduced with Wear OS 6, but an individual redesigned app surface does not prove that the entire watch is running Wear OS 6. Apps, Tiles, and platform components can be delivered separately.

Google’s May 2025 announcement said Pixel devices would receive the updates first later that year; it did not provide a complete model-by-model eligibility schedule. Pixel Watch 4 was later described by Google as the first smartwatch built to showcase the full design. Wear OS 7 is a subsequent release and should not be confused with the original Wear OS 6 announcement.
Which watches are supported?
Pixel Watch 4 is Google’s showcase device for the full Material 3 Expressive experience on Wear OS 6. Other Pixel Watch and Wear OS devices may receive some system, app, or Tile features, but the cited Google material does not provide a complete eligibility matrix or promise identical behavior on every model.

Why you should not download a random Fitbit APK
Use Google Play or Apple’s App Store when the official Google Health listing is available. An APK mirror can provide the wrong or modified package, omit a watch companion component, cause signature or compatibility problems, and prevent normal automatic updates.
If the redesign is missing
- Update Google Health (Fitbit) on the phone.
- Open the watch Play Store and update the watch-side app separately.
- Update the phone’s Play Store, Google Play services, and the Pixel Watch app if installed.
- Confirm that the watch is connected to the phone or Wi-Fi and has sufficient charge.
- Restart both the phone and watch.
- Check the watch’s Wear OS version and model.
- Open Fitbit Today and inspect individual Tiles rather than relying on the app icon.
- Wait for a staged rollout to reach your account or region.
An unchanged app icon does not necessarily mean the update failed: some changes appear inside system surfaces or Tiles, and components can arrive separately.

What Google Health means in 2026
Google’s Help Center says the Fitbit app became Google Health starting May 19, 2026. For users with a connected Fitbit device or Pixel Watch, Google describes four tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. Without a connected device, the experience is more focused on Today and Health.
Fitbit Premium becomes Google Health Premium. Coaching and other health features depend on age, device, country, and subscription conditions, so installing the app does not guarantee every feature for every user. Google also documents changes such as a personalized weekly cardio target and VO2 max naming replacing cardio fitness score, with feature scope determined by its current Help Center guidance.
Battery claims and developer context
Google claimed up to 10% more battery life with Wear OS 6. This is a company claim, not an independent test or a guarantee for every watch. Google’s later Wear OS 7 post separately says average users moving from Wear OS 6 can expect up to 10% better battery life; that later statement should not be merged with the original Wear OS 6 claim.
For developers, Google documents TransformingLazyColumn and EdgeButton in the Wear OS Compose libraries, plus Watch Face Format version 4 and a Watch Face Push API. These capabilities do not prove that every watch or third-party app has adopted the redesign.

Should you update?
Update through the official app store if you want the newer round-screen interactions, glanceable Tiles, or Google Health/Fitbit integration. Material 3 Expressive is a software and interface change, not a hardware upgrade, and Google’s battery figures are not promises of improved sensor accuracy, sleep tracking, or medical reliability.
