Google’s Phone by Google app for Wear OS has been receiving Material 3 Expressive changes in stages: the first reported update focused on call screens in 2025, while a broader redesign was reported in June 2026. The changes refresh controls and navigation; they are not evidence of a new calling service or improved call quality. Availability can vary by watch, software version and rollout.
What “M3 Expressive” means for the Wear OS Phone app
“M3 Expressive” is shorthand for Material 3 Expressive, Google’s design language for Android and Wear OS. On watches, Google describes features such as Dynamic Color, responsive controls, larger touch targets, animations that follow round-screen curves and shape-changing elements. Those system-level design goals do not mean every screen in every Google app changes at once. Google announced Material 3 Expressive for Android and Wear OS on May 13, 2025.
This update applies to the Phone by Google app running on a Wear OS watch. It is not a new phone, a replacement for the watch’s operating system or a confirmed change to how calls are carried over Bluetooth or LTE.
What changed in the first reported rollout
In a report dated July 18, 2025, 9to5Google described an early, limited Wear OS update centered on dialing and the active-call experience. Its observations included:

- A larger end-call button positioned near the bottom edge of the round display.
- Mute and overflow controls moved higher, with call duration between them.
- An updated dialing interface and a redesigned incoming-call screen.
- Incoming calls that could be answered with horizontal swipes or buttons.
- A “More” menu presented as a list instead of the earlier grid-style layout.
These were reported interface observations, not a complete Google changelog. At the time, the rollout was not widespread: some beta users reportedly saw the new interface, others only parts of it, and some retained the older layout. Read the July 2025 report.
What the broader redesign adds
A June 16, 2026 report from 9to5Google described a more extensive redesign than the earlier call-screen changes. The app opened to a Recents feed with card-like entries, used Dynamic Color, and placed large Contacts and dialer shortcuts at the top. The keypad also used Material 3 Expressive styling; its symbols include *, # and +, accessible by scrolling.

The new landing-page organization replaces or rearranges the older structure of Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Dialpad and Voicemail. That can make common destinations more direct, but users accustomed to the previous layout may need to find familiar options again. The report described the redesign on Wear OS 7 and also on Wear OS 6 with Phone by Google version 165. That observation does not establish version 165 as a universal minimum, nor does it confirm that every watch on either OS version has the same screens. Read the June 2026 report.
How to check whether your watch has it
- On the watch, open the Play Store and check for updates to Phone by Google and other available system apps.
- Check the watch’s Wear OS version in its Settings. The redesigned interface has been reported on Wear OS 6 and Wear OS 7, but that does not guarantee availability on every device running either version.
- Open Phone by Google. Look for a Recents-first home screen, prominent Contacts and dialer shortcuts, updated keypad styling, or larger call controls.
- If an update installed but the interface has not changed, restart the watch. Restarting is a basic troubleshooting step, not a way to force Google to enable a staged rollout.
These checks can help identify an update; they cannot guarantee activation. Google has not established a universal release date or a single procedure for enabling the redesign.

Why the interface may differ between watches
Wear OS system updates and app changes can arrive at different times. A watch may be waiting for an app update, a manufacturer software build or a staged Google-side enablement. The reported rollout has also appeared piecemeal, so a user might see redesigned call controls but an older home screen, or the reverse.
- Watch model and manufacturer: Pixel Watch and other manufacturers’ watches may receive system builds on different schedules. The available reports do not establish identical behavior across brands or models.
- Watch size: The June 2026 report said the favorite-contact grid appeared on larger Pixel Watch screens, citing 45 mm versus 41 mm models. Do not assume that a smaller watch will show the same layout.
- App version and rollout state: Version 165 was noted in one Wear OS 6 observation, but it is not a confirmed universal requirement.
- Region and account: The reports do not confirm worldwide availability or a country-by-country release schedule.
Google’s Material 3 Expressive program is broader than Phone. A 9to5Google roundup published October 3, 2025, showed that Google’s Wear OS app updates were uneven and app-specific; one app’s redesign did not establish that other apps had been updated. See the roundup.

What to do if you do not see it
- Install available Wear OS and Phone by Google updates through the watch’s Play Store and system settings.
- Restart the watch and paired phone, then confirm the watch is using the Google account you expect.
- If the app still looks unchanged but calls work, wait for the staged rollout rather than repeatedly clearing app data or factory-resetting the watch.
- If calling itself is broken, troubleshoot the connection separately: check Bluetooth pairing, LTE or eSIM service where applicable, app permissions and phone-watch connection. The redesign is primarily a user-interface update.
Sideloading an APK is not a reliable default fix. A staged rollout may depend on more than the installed package, and an incompatible package can cause app or security problems.

The reported changes concern visual design, control size and navigation. Larger controls may be easier to tap on a small round screen, and direct Contacts and dialer shortcuts may reduce the steps to common tasks. The cited reporting does not establish new carrier support, improved call quality, new LTE functionality, emergency-calling changes or watch-specific Call Screen or Call Assist features.

Do not buy a new watch solely to get this redesign. It is a usability update, and availability varies; choose hardware based on broader needs such as LTE, battery life, health features, performance and support duration. Google’s claim of up to 10% better battery life applies to Wear OS 6 generally, not to this Phone app redesign. The announcement does not attribute a battery gain to the Phone app.
