The Google Pixel Watch 2 fixes several of the original watch’s biggest weaknesses: it lasts longer with the always-on display on, tracks exercise heart rate more convincingly, and adds useful health and safety features. It is still a compact, daily-charging smartwatch rather than a serious endurance watch. In 2026, it makes the most sense at a substantial discount for an Android user—especially a Pixel owner—who wants Fitbit health tracking and Google apps in one device.
What’s better than the first Pixel Watch?
The Pixel Watch 2, announced in October 2023, is a refinement, not a redesign. Its strongest upgrades are under the glass: a more efficient processor, a redesigned heart-rate system, skin-temperature sensing, continuous electrodermal activity sensing for Fitbit’s Body Response feature, and more automatic workout detection. Google also improved the battery claim and changed the charger.
| Area | Pixel Watch 2 | What the change means |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 with Cortex M33 co-processor, according to Google’s specifications | More efficient hardware; independent testing found it responsive, though everyday interactions are not transformed dramatically. |
| Battery rating | Up to 24 hours with always-on display enabled, per Google | A more useful basis than the original model’s 24-hour claim, which did not use the same always-on-display condition. |
| Health sensors | Redesigned multi-path heart-rate sensor, skin-temperature sensor and cEDA sensing, per Google’s launch announcement | Better exercise heart-rate tracking and new wellness features. |
| Automatic exercise detection | Seven additional workout types, according to DC Rainmaker’s review | More activities can be recognized without starting a workout manually, but detection may begin late. |
| Charging | Four-pin contact charger rather than the original’s wireless charging puck | Faster charging, but less flexibility if you lose the supplied charger. |
| Launch price | $349 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth; $399 LTE, in October 2023 | These are historical launch prices, not a statement of its current 2026 price. |
The processor upgrade matters more for efficiency than for a startling speed boost. The more persuasive improvement is the overall package: the second watch is a more credible everyday smartwatch and fitness companion than the first, even though its core concept and appearance remain familiar.
Does the battery last longer?
Google rates the Pixel Watch 2 for up to 24 hours with the always-on display enabled. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime, and results vary with display settings, LTE, GPS workouts, notifications, music streaming, sleep tracking and other activity. In particular, the original Pixel Watch’s 24-hour figure was not measured on the same always-on-display basis, so the headline numbers are not a like-for-like comparison.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Independent reviewers reported different outcomes. DC Rainmaker generally got through a full day and described charging roughly every day and a half on a non-LTE model, with longer GPS sessions reducing endurance. Engadget often ended the day with around 35–40% remaining, while WIRED found its unit did not consistently meet Google’s figure during daily activity tracking. Those are review observations, not a promise of what every owner will see.
- For ordinary smartwatch use: plan on making charging part of your daily routine, even if your use sometimes stretches beyond a day.
- For GPS workouts or LTE use: expect greater drain; a long workout can cut into the remaining charge substantially.
- For sleep tracking: you will need to choose a regular charging window, such as while getting ready or showering.
- During setup: updates, syncing and initial use can make early battery results unrepresentative of settled daily use.
The watch is viable if nightly or daily charging is acceptable. If you want several days between charges for travel, hiking or long training blocks, a Garmin or a fitness tracker is a better starting point.
Charging is faster, but less universal
The contact-pin charger can refill the watch quickly. Launch-era specifications and coverage put a full charge at about 75 minutes, with roughly 12 hours of use from a 30-minute charge. But the Pixel Watch 2 cannot simply be set on a generic Qi pad or charged from a phone’s reverse-wireless-charging feature. Keep its specific charger available at home and when travelling; losing or damaging it is more inconvenient than losing a standard wireless puck.
How good are its health and fitness features?
Heart rate: a meaningful improvement
Google said the Pixel Watch 2 had its most accurate smartwatch heart-rate tracking at launch. More importantly, DC Rainmaker’s independent exercise testing found readings close to a chest strap for most of the activities tested, with occasional errors during warm-up. That makes heart-rate tracking one of the watch’s best-supported improvements over the first generation.

Optical readings are still affected by fit, skin contact, movement and temperature. Wear the watch snugly enough to maintain contact during exercise, and treat its measurements as wellness and workout information—not a medical diagnosis.
GPS and workouts
Independent testing found GPS performance generally strong in open conditions and close to a respected multiband sports watch in some comparisons. The Pixel Watch 2 does not have multiband GPS, however, and testing found errors around dense buildings and some forested sections. It is suitable for everyday walks, runs and workouts; athletes who need maximum route consistency, extensive training tools or dependable long-session endurance should look at a dedicated sports watch.
Automatic detection for seven additional workout types is convenient when you forget to start an activity. It is not a substitute for starting an important workout yourself: automatic detection can begin late, leaving an incomplete record. Manually start a GPS workout when route and heart-rate data matter, and begin long sessions with a healthy charge.
Stress, temperature and sleep
The cEDA sensor supports Fitbit’s Body Response feature. It uses electrodermal activity with other physiological signals to flag possible body responses and can prompt you to log an emotion or try guided relaxation. This is a wellness prompt, not an objective reading of your emotional state or a diagnosis of stress or a mental-health condition. The skin-temperature sensor adds another health signal; readings and the interpretation of health features can depend on settings and availability.

ECG and safety-related functions are not necessarily available to every owner. Country, regulatory approval, watch model, carrier and account configuration can affect access to ECG, emergency communication and fall detection. Check Google’s Pixel Watch feature support information for the function and location you care about.
Do you need Fitbit Premium?
No. Basic activity, exercise, heart-rate and sleep tracking, along with historical data and the Health Metrics dashboard, can be used without Premium, subject to feature and regional limits. DC Rainmaker tested the watch with a free Fitbit account and found that historical data and the dashboard remained available.
Premium is for the extra layer: coaching, guided content and some deeper insights. Engadget cited a U.S. price of $9.99 per month in Pixel Watch 2-era coverage; current pricing and included features can change, so check Fitbit’s Premium page before subscribing. Google included six months of Premium with the watch at launch, but that historical offer should not be assumed for a 2026 purchase.
What is it like as a smartwatch?
Unlike a basic Fitbit tracker, the Pixel Watch 2 runs Wear OS and supports apps from Google Play. Its everyday strengths include Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Wallet, notifications, music controls and apps such as Spotify, Strava and Komoot. Fitbit remains central to exercise and health data, while Wear OS provides the broader app and smartwatch experience. That combination is the watch’s appeal, but it also means health tracking and general smartwatch functions live across Google and Fitbit services.

The LTE version can support calls, messages and connected use away from a phone, but buying LTE does not provide free cellular service. Cellular use requires a compatible carrier plan, and emergency or safety functions may have separate availability and account requirements. Synchronization with a phone also depends on an internet connection; Engadget documented an instance of an incomplete workout after the watch ran out of power before the record was complete.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the design comfortable?
The case remains a single 41-mm size. Google lists a 31-gram weight without the band, an AMOLED display at 320 pixels per inch with up to 1,000 nits brightness, Gorilla Glass 5 and a 50-meter water-resistance rating. Existing Pixel Watch bands remain compatible. The aluminum body is lighter than the first watch’s stainless-steel case, while the rounded, domed screen keeps the distinctive compact look.
Small size is a real trade-off. It suits smaller wrists and is comfortable for sleep tracking, but users with larger wrists may find it undersized. The screen also leaves less room for text and controls, and the compact body limits space for a larger battery. The curved glass is exposed to knocks and scratches; a protector or case may be sensible for outdoor, construction or contact-sport use, though either changes the watch’s appearance and feel.
Who should buy the Pixel Watch 2 in 2026?
It is an older model by 2026, so its value depends on its actual selling price and the cost of newer Pixel Watch models available where you live. Google’s Pixel Watch comparison page is the place to check current models and specifications. The Pixel Watch 2’s $349 and $399 figures are its October 2023 launch prices; do not treat them as current offers.

- Consider it at a substantial discount if you use Android, want Fitbit tracking with Google apps, prefer a compact watch and can charge daily.
- Compare carefully at a moderate discount if you are a Pixel or Fitbit user who values its health platform; weigh the savings against the newer model’s hardware and support runway.
- Choose the newer model instead if the Pixel Watch 2 is priced near a current-generation watch. At near-parity pricing, an older model is difficult to justify.
It is a particularly natural fit for Pixel-phone owners, but it works with most phones running Android 9.0 or newer. Setup requires a Google Account, the Google Pixel Watch app, the Fitbit app/account and internet access for setup and syncing. It does not work with iPhones, so it is not an option for someone who intends to keep using an iPhone with an Apple Watch-style experience.
How does it compare with the main alternatives?
| Alternative | Choose it when… | Trade-off versus Pixel Watch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Newer Pixel Watch model | You want the current Google watch and the price is close to the Pixel Watch 2. | Check the current Google comparison for model-specific screen, case and battery differences; newer hardware generally offers a longer support runway. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | You want a feature-rich Android smartwatch, more size choices or Samsung-phone integration. | Some advanced features work best or exclusively with Samsung phones; health-platform preference may also differ. |
| Garmin | You prioritize multiday battery, endurance training, navigation or outdoor use. | It is generally less focused on Google apps, voice-assistant integration and Wear OS smartwatch polish. |
| Fitbit Charge 6 | You mainly want health and fitness tracking in a smaller device. | It does not provide the full Wear OS app and smartwatch experience. |
| Fitbit Sense 2 | You prefer Fitbit’s health and stress focus over third-party smartwatch apps. | The Pixel Watch 2 is the more capable full smartwatch; Sense 2 is more tracker-oriented. |
| Apple Watch | You are considering moving to an iPhone. | Apple Watch requires an iPhone and is not compatible with Pixel Watch 2’s Android setup. |

Should Pixel Watch owners upgrade?
For a first-generation owner, the case to upgrade is strongest if the original watch’s battery, workout heart-rate results or performance frustrate you. The new sensors, more useful always-on battery rating and faster contact charging are meaningful changes. If your first watch still lasts long enough for your routine and you are satisfied with its tracking, the similar design and basic smartwatch experience make an immediate upgrade less compelling. If what you really want is a larger case, several days of battery or serious training tools, neither the Pixel Watch 2 nor its modest refinements address that priority.
