Google Pixel Watch 4 review: The Gemini smartwatch

Pixel Watch 4 is Google’s best smartwatch yet, with a brighter display, faster charging, better GPS and Gemini wrist interaction—but its subscription model and modest battery life still matter.

Verdict: The Google Pixel Watch 4 is the best smartwatch for people who want Google’s services, Fitbit-style health tracking, fast charging and Gemini on their wrist. Its brighter domed display, dual-frequency GPS, improved battery claims, repairable design and LTE satellite SOS make it a substantial product—not just a software refresh.

It is not the best choice for everyone. The Gorilla Glass 5 screen is less reassuring than sapphire crystal, battery life still falls short of Garmin-class watches, advanced athletes may want deeper training metrics, and Google’s most personalized AI health coaching requires a Google Health Premium membership. Gemini improves hands-free interaction, but it does not turn the Pixel Watch into a fully local, always-available AI computer.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: Pixel owners and Android users who want the most Google-centric smartwatch.
  • Biggest strengths: Bright display, fast charging, Google and Fitbit integration, Gemini access, improved GPS and safety features.
  • Biggest weaknesses: Gorilla Glass durability, subscription-dependent coaching, and battery life that remains modest beside Garmin and some OnePlus watches.
  • Recommended size: 45mm if your wrist can accommodate it; 41mm for smaller wrists or a lighter watch.
  • Recommended connectivity: Wi-Fi/Bluetooth for most users; LTE for standalone calls, emergency connectivity and satellite SOS.
  • Gemini verdict: Useful for short conversational tasks and wrist-first control, but not a reason by itself to upgrade from a Pixel Watch 3.

Price, sizes and connectivity

In the US, the Pixel Watch 4 starts at $349.99 for the 41mm model. The 45mm version starts at $399.99. LTE versions cost more and may require a separate carrier plan; any promotional data offer should be checked with Google and the carrier before purchase.

The 41mm watch weighs 31g without its band and uses a 325mAh battery. It is rated for up to 30 hours with the always-on display enabled and up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode. The 45mm weighs 36.7g, has a 455mAh battery and is rated for up to 40 hours with always-on display and up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed everyday results.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel Watch 4 (45mm) - Smartwatch - Moonstone Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

The 41mm fits approximately 130–210mm wrists, depending on the band; the 45mm fits approximately 150–215mm wrists. If both sizes fit, the 45mm is the better default because its extra screen area and battery capacity are meaningful. Choose the 41mm if comfort, lower price or a smaller profile matters more.

Most Android phones running Android 11 or newer are supported, with a Google Account and the Google Pixel Watch app required. The watch does not work with iPhone. Compatibility does not guarantee identical feature support: carrier policies, regional approvals, account permissions and Google services can affect the experience.

Design and display: more screen, more personality

The Pixel Watch 4 retains Google’s distinctive circular, minimalist design but replaces the previous flat-topped presentation with a domed Actua 360 display. Google says the active display area is 10% larger and the bezels are 15% smaller. The 320ppi AMOLED LTPO panel supports a responsive 1–60Hz refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

The dome is the most visible hardware change. Content appears to reach farther toward the edges, and the watch looks more like a small curved lens than a traditional flat smartwatch. It is bright enough to remain legible outdoors, while the larger active area makes notifications, tiles and maps easier to read.

There is a trade-off. Curved glass can introduce optical distortion at certain angles, and some users may find horizontal swipes feel less predictable near the edge. The cover is custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5, not sapphire crystal. That should be adequate for ordinary use, but buyers who regularly climb, work around hard surfaces or hike through dense terrain should consider the more scratch-resistant sapphire-equipped alternatives.

The case uses 100% recycled aluminum and is rated for 5ATM water resistance and IP68 dust and water protection. Those ratings do not make it indestructible, and water resistance can change after damage or repair. Google’s redesigned interior is more serviceable than earlier generations, with a detailed repair manual available, but repairability is not the same as effortless owner repair or a guarantee that factory water resistance will be restored.

Battery life and charging

Battery life is improved, but charging speed is the more important upgrade. Google rates the 41mm model for up to 30 hours with always-on display and the 45mm for up to 40 hours. LTE use, GPS, calls, music, sleep tracking, notifications, poor cellular signal, cold temperatures and battery age can all reduce those figures.

Model Battery Always-on estimate Battery Saver estimate Approximate charging
41mm 325mAh Up to 30 hours Up to 48 hours 50% in about 15 minutes; full in about 45 minutes
45mm 455mAh Up to 40 hours Up to 72 hours 50% in about 15 minutes; full in about 60 minutes

The new side-mounted proprietary Quick Charge Dock is designed to reach about 50% in 15 minutes or less. Google says the 41mm reaches roughly 80% in 25 minutes and full charge in 45 minutes; the 45mm reaches roughly 80% in 30 minutes and full charge in 60 minutes.

That makes it easier to charge before bed, before a workout or while showering, preserving sleep and activity data without waiting beside a charger. The dock needs to be aligned on a stable, hard surface, and older Pixel Watch chargers are not the accessory to rely on. Frequent travelers may want a second dock.

Wear OS and everyday use

Wear OS 6.0 gives the watch the expected smartwatch fundamentals: notifications, apps, watch faces, tiles, calls, messages, Google services and phone integration. The experience is strongest for users already invested in Google Calendar, Maps, Gmail and Android messaging. Pixel phones should provide the smoothest ecosystem experience, although a Pixel phone is not technically required.

The Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform is paired with a Cortex-M55 machine-learning coprocessor. Google claims the coprocessor is 25% faster while using half the power; that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified measurement. The watch includes 32GB of eMMC storage and 2GB of SDRAM.

Gemini on the wrist: useful, but not magic

Gemini is best understood as an interaction improvement, not the entire identity of the watch. It supplements the older Google Assistant experience and lets you ask questions or issue commands from the wrist. Pixel Watch 4’s distinctive feature is raise-to-talk: raising the watch toward your face can begin an interaction without saying “Hey Google” or holding a button.

Practical requests include:

  • “What is my next calendar event?”
  • “Start a run.”
  • “Set a timer.”
  • “Send a quick reply.”
  • “Give me directions.”
  • “Summarize today’s health trends,” where supported by the current Google Health and Fitbit software.

This is most useful when your hands are occupied or your phone is inconvenient. It is less useful for lengthy questions, complex navigation or tasks requiring a stable internet connection. Some requests may be slower or unavailable when the watch is away from the phone and has weak Wi-Fi or cellular service.

  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Raise-to-talk also depends on settings such as tilt-to-wake or the always-on display, and accidental activations are possible for users who gesture while speaking. If Gemini does not respond, check connectivity, account permissions and the phone connection before assuming the hardware is faulty.

Gemini is not exclusive to Pixel Watch 4 across Wear OS. The Pixel model’s advantage is the combination of wrist-raising interaction and Google’s tighter connection between watch, phone, safety and health services. It should not be described as a fully local assistant: cloud, phone and service availability can all matter.

Health and fitness

Pixel Watch 4 includes a multipath optical heart-rate sensor, ECG-compatible electrical sensors, SpO2 sensors, cEDA for body-response tracking, a skin-temperature sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, altimeter, barometer, compass and magnetometer. It supports sleep tracking, heart-rate and rhythm features, exercise tracking, Loss of Pulse Detection and dual-frequency GPS.

Dual-frequency GPS is a particularly meaningful improvement over older Pixel Watch models. It should help in difficult environments such as dense urban areas and tree cover, although no GPS watch is equally reliable in every setting. Open-sky routes remain the easiest test.

The broader strength is Google’s Fitbit and Google Health ecosystem. Sleep, wellness and activity information is presented in a more approachable way than on many specialist sports watches. Heart-rate tracking is generally suitable for ordinary workouts, but readings can become less dependable during high-intensity or rapidly changing efforts. Sleep algorithms may also classify restless periods differently from competing watches.

Serious runners and endurance athletes may miss running power, detailed training-load analysis, recovery-time estimates, offline GPX route creation and deeper performance analytics. Garmin remains the more natural choice for structured training and outdoor use.

ECG, SpO2, emergency functions, Loss of Pulse Detection and other health tools can vary by country, account, phone, regulatory approval and software version. None of these readings is a medical diagnosis or a substitute for professional care.

Google Health Premium and the real ownership cost

Core activity tracking, ordinary notifications and the watch’s basic smartwatch functions should not be confused with Google’s more advanced coaching layer. Google currently markets personalized Gemini-built coaching through a Google Health Premium membership. Deeper insights, personalized plans and AI coaching may therefore depend on a paid membership after any included trial or promotion ends.

The available product information confirms the subscription dependency but does not establish a reliable current recurring US price. Check the live Google Store and Google Health terms before buying; promotions, trial lengths and branding can change. Do not assume that a Fitbit Premium reference from an older review has exactly the same terms as Google Health Premium.

The practical buying advice is simple: buy the watch if you want its hardware, notifications and core tracking. Pay for the membership only if you specifically want its personalized coaching, plans or deeper insights. The watch remains usable without treating the subscription as mandatory, but the value proposition is weaker if the features that attracted you are mostly premium coaching features.

LTE, satellite SOS and safety

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth models generally depend on the paired phone for connectivity when away from known Wi-Fi. LTE models can handle calls and messages away from the phone, support cellular-connected apps and navigation, and provide standalone emergency connectivity subject to carrier and regional requirements.

Pixel Watch 4’s satellite SOS is listed for LTE models only. It is not a universal anywhere-in-the-world guarantee: satellite visibility, supported regions, emergency-service connections, activation requirements and carrier rules apply. A Wi-Fi model cannot simply reproduce LTE emergency calling when the phone is absent.

LTE is worth considering for runners, commuters, family-safety scenarios and anyone who regularly leaves the phone behind. For users who nearly always carry a phone, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth is cheaper and simpler.

Check Google’s current emergency and satellite requirements.

Pixel Watch 4 versus the alternatives

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8

Galaxy Watch 8 is the closest Wear OS rival. It is a stronger fit for Samsung-phone owners and buyers who prefer a more conventional or rugged watch design, sapphire-glass durability and Samsung Health. Pixel Watch 4 counters with tighter Google integration, raise-to-talk Gemini, fast charging, a smaller distinctive form factor and satellite SOS on LTE models. Pricing changes, so compare current street prices rather than launch figures.

OnePlus Watch 3

Choose the OnePlus Watch 3 if multi-day battery life, fast charging and sapphire glass matter more than Google’s Fitbit ecosystem. Pixel Watch 4 offers a more polished Google experience and stronger Gemini rationale, but OnePlus is better suited to buyers who want fewer charging interruptions and a more durable design. OnePlus’s companion health software is generally less comprehensive.

Garmin

Garmin remains the better option for serious runners, cyclists, hikers and outdoor athletes. Depending on the model, battery life can be measured in days or weeks, and training tools are more specialized. Pixel Watch 4 is better for apps, notifications, Google services, conversational AI and phone-like interaction.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch is the obvious choice for iPhone owners, but it is not a practical alternative for Pixel Watch 4 buyers because Pixel Watch requires Android and the Google Pixel Watch app.

Should Pixel Watch 3 owners upgrade?

The upgrade is meaningful but not compulsory. The strongest reasons are the much faster new dock, brighter larger-area display, dual-frequency GPS, increased battery capacity, repairable construction, skin-temperature sensing, Gemini raise-to-talk and LTE satellite SOS. These matter most if your current watch struggles with charging, GPS accuracy, screen visibility or battery endurance.

If your Pixel Watch 3 still meets your needs, the Watch 4’s core smartwatch experience is not a complete reinvention. Waiting for a discount—or keeping the Watch 3 until its battery or hardware becomes limiting—can make more financial sense. Gemini alone is not a sufficient reason to upgrade unless you will genuinely use wrist-first voice interaction.

Who should buy the Pixel Watch 4?

  • Buy it if you own a Pixel phone, want Google’s best-integrated watch, value rapid charging, use Fitbit or Google Health, or want LTE safety features.
  • Choose the 45mm if it fits comfortably and you value screen size and battery life.
  • Choose the 41mm for smaller wrists, lower weight or the lower starting price.
  • Choose LTE if you need calls, messages or emergency connectivity away from your phone and accept carrier costs.
  • Choose another watch if you need sapphire glass, several days or weeks of normal battery life, advanced endurance metrics, or no recurring health subscription.

Pixel Watch 4 is the best expression of Google’s smartwatch vision: attractive, fast to recharge, increasingly capable for health and safety, and more conversational than its predecessors. Its weaknesses—modest endurance, Gorilla Glass and paid advanced coaching—are real. Gemini makes the watch easier to talk to, but the purchase decision should rest on the complete package, not the AI label alone.
