The piece covered the author’s first week with the watch, but stopped short of a full review. For anyone buying or setting one up now, the practical highlights are its Android-only compatibility, a proprietary charging cable, and a battery rated by Google for up to 24 hours under specified test conditions.
What “goes nuts” meant in the original article
The playful headline referred to an enthusiastic look at the Pixel Watch 2, not a confirmed hardware failure, recall, or widespread battery problem. Droid Life described an early hands-on: the author had worn the watch for about a week and tried sleep tracking, workouts, battery use with the always-on display on and off, charging, timers, the rotating crown, and the included Sport band. The author explicitly did not present those first impressions as a completed review.
That distinction matters: the article is useful as an account of what the watch was like to unbox and explore at launch, but it is not evidence of long-term reliability or a controlled battery test. Read the original unboxing and tour.

A USB-C wall power adapter is not listed among the included items; Google’s safety documentation says the adapter is not provided. You may need to supply a compatible adapter. The cable is not a generic Qi charging pad: Google instructs owners to use the Pixel Watch 2 cable, and reverse wireless charging from a Pixel phone is unsupported.

What changed from the first Pixel Watch
At its October 2023 launch, Pixel Watch 2 paired a Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor with a Cortex-M33 co-processor and shipped with Wear OS 4.0. Google described a 100% recycled aluminum housing; the watch weighs 31 grams without its band. Its 41 mm AMOLED display is rated at 320 pixels per inch and up to 1,000 nits, with an always-on display option. The official specifications are on Google’s Pixel Watch 2 specifications page.

More health sensors, with limits
Pixel Watch 2 added a redesigned multi-path optical heart-rate sensor, skin-temperature sensing, continuous electrodermal activity sensing (cEDA) for body-response tracking, and electrical sensors compatible with the ECG app. Google also claimed improved heart-rate tracking. Treat that as the company’s launch claim, not a guarantee of accuracy for every person or activity. Sensor and health-app features can have regional, app, and regulatory limitations; readings are not medical diagnoses and should not replace professional care.
Battery life: a daily target, not a guarantee
Google rated the 306 mAh battery for up to 24 hours with always-on display. Google qualifies its maximum battery-life figures as approximate and based on default settings and a median usage profile. Display use, LTE and signal strength, GPS workouts, health tracking, notifications, and use of the speaker, microphone, or Assistant can all affect actual endurance. The original unboxing reported battery testing but did not establish a definitive long-term result.

Later online posts describe severe drain for some users, including after updates, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal defect. An independent Guardian review also noted missed portions of a run and criticized repair options; that is useful context, not proof that every watch will behave the same way.
If a new watch drains unusually fast
During initial setup, updates, app installation, account syncing, and frequent screen use may temporarily raise power consumption. Check how the watch behaves after setup settles, and consider whether always-on display, cellular use, workouts, tracking, or notifications are driving the drain.

- Investigate if the watch cannot approach a daily cycle with light use, loses charge rapidly while idle, repeatedly restarts or powers off, or cannot charge beyond a low percentage.
- Unusual heat, or a sharp change after an update that does not settle, warrants contacting Google support rather than assuming a reset will fix it.
- A factory reset can erase data and configuration. For a new device—especially one that is overheating—consider support or warranty handling before resetting it.
Set up the watch before judging it
- Confirm the phone runs Android 9.0 or newer. Pixel Watch 2 is not compatible with iPhone.
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app, then sign in with a Google Account.
- Place the watch on its supplied charging cable and pair it through the Pixel Watch app. Google’s setup and troubleshooting guide covers the pairing process.
- Install available system and app updates. App screens and menu names can change with software versions.
- Review notification access, Fitbit permissions, sleep tracking, and emergency and safety settings. If you have an LTE model, confirm carrier compatibility and service activation; LTE hardware alone does not include cellular service.
- Give updates and syncing time to finish before using the first setup period as a measure of routine battery life.
If the watch will not charge
- Remove the watch fully from the charger, then reseat it with the charging pins aligned and the crown oriented in the same direction as the cable.
- Check that the watch back and cable pins are clean and undamaged.
- Use the Pixel Watch 2 USB-C Fast Charging Cable supplied with the purchase. A generic Qi pad or Pixel phone reverse wireless charging is not a substitute.
- Do not charge the watch or cable when wet. If it still will not charge, follow Google’s charging troubleshooting steps or contact support.

Buying or keeping one today: the trade-offs
Pixel Watch 2 is a compact Android smartwatch for people who want Google services and Fitbit features in a light 41 mm design. Its launch-era processor, expanded sensor set, and faster charging improved on the original model, but its one-day battery target still means frequent charging. The proprietary charger, absent wall adapter, and limited repair options are real ownership trade-offs. The Guardian review raised repairability concerns, while Google’s safety guide directs owners to Google or authorized service providers rather than self-repair.

- Consider it if you use Android, want Fitbit integration, prefer a smaller watch, and are comfortable charging daily.
- Look elsewhere if you use an iPhone, need multi-day battery life, want a larger case, or prioritize an easily replaceable battery and self-repair.
- For a used or refurbished unit, confirm the correct charger is included, inspect charging behavior and battery condition, check that the device has been reset, and verify warranty and LTE-carrier details with the seller. A listing’s “new in box” description alone cannot establish those points.
The specification page documents the watch’s launch features, but the evidence here does not establish a current 2026 selling price, stock status, carrier plan, or current software version. Check those details directly before purchase.
