Where are Grand Seiko mechanical watches made?
Grand Seiko identifies Studio Shizukuishi, in a forested area of Iwate Prefecture, as the production home of its 9S mechanical movements and watches. The brand describes the facility as bringing advanced manufacturing together with the work of skilled craftspeople. Grand Seiko’s mechanical movement overview explains the production approach; its Studio Shizukuishi profile describes the facility as dedicated to crafting 9S mechanical watches.
What is a 9S mechanical movement?
Caliber 9S launched in 1998. Grand Seiko says its development drew on advances in materials and manufacturing as well as watchmaking craft. The 9S family includes different movements rather than one shared specification: calibers have distinct designs and functions, so their accuracy claims, power reserves, winding systems and complications should be checked individually.
In Grand Seiko’s account, MEMS technology is used to make precision components, while watchmakers assemble, adjust, regulate and inspect movements. The brand also says 9S movements are tested in six positions and at three temperatures under the Grand Seiko Standard. That is a description of the manufacturer’s testing standard, not a promise that every watch will maintain an identical rate in everyday use. Grand Seiko’s movement page describes these processes.

One example: 9SA5
Grand Seiko says development of the 9SA5 took 12 years. Its official specification lists a rate of -3 to +5 seconds per day and an 80-hour power reserve. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent test results, and should not be generalized to every 9S caliber. The studio profile provides the brand’s account and specifications.
What did the 2023 Studio Shizukuishi tour show?
In a report published July 8, 2023, Zach Blass of Time+Tide recounts a Grand Seiko press trip to the studio. His account describes historical-watch displays, explanations of watch components, MEMS production and finishing, and windows looking into work areas where watchmakers could be seen. He also describes an upstairs salon and an insect-hotel project on the grounds. These are observations from that visit; the report does not establish that every visitor sees these areas or that the itinerary remains the same.

Blass reports that the building was designed by Kengo Kuma and opened in 2020, with wood surfaces and a setting integrated into the landscape. He connects those design choices to Grand Seiko’s idea of the “nature of time.” The architectural details and interpretation are from his account, not a current visitor guide. The article also says Blass purchased an SBGH283 at the studio after his visit. That is a detail about his trip, not confirmation of the model’s current availability or exclusivity.

Can you tour the Grand Seiko factory in Shizukuishi?
The 2023 report documents a press-trip visit, but the sources here do not confirm whether Studio Shizukuishi currently offers public tours, how to book, visitor eligibility, schedules or prices. Do not treat the reported itinerary as a standing public-tour offer. For current access information, contact Grand Seiko through its official channels rather than relying on a past press visit.
