Grand Seiko’s Shinshu Watch Studio sits inside Seiko Epson’s Shiojiri facility in Nagano Prefecture, where the brand says it makes Spring Drive and 9F quartz watches. A separate operation in the same facility, the Micro Artist Studio, produces selected high-end Spring Drive Masterpiece watches. Zach Blass’s 2023 tour report offers a journalist’s view of work at the site; it is an account of that visit, not a current visitor guide or a step-by-step record of every watch’s production.
Where are Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches made?
Grand Seiko places the Shinshu Watch Studio at the Seiko Epson Shiojiri Plant in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture. The brand describes it as an integrated watchmaking operation spanning movement development and design, the production and finishing of cases, dials, hands and indexes, and watch assembly and adjustment. Grand Seiko identifies the studio as the home of its Spring Drive and quartz watchmaking. Grand Seiko’s Shinshu Watch Studio page and its November 2024 Nagano feature describe the facility and its component studios; the feature cautions that its information reflects the time of coverage and may have changed.
That makes Shiojiri the right answer to where Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are made, but it is worth being precise about what “made” means. The brand’s account encompasses many stages, while a particular model’s route through the facility may differ. “Integrated manufacture” is Grand Seiko’s characterization of the operation, not an independently established industry ranking.
What did the 2023 Shiojiri tour show?
In a report published on 9 October 2023, Zach Blass described Shiojiri as the final stop in Time+Tide Watches’ manufacture-tour series. During his visit, he saw watchmakers working on quartz and Spring Drive assembly, artisans making components, case construction and Zaratsu polishing, and production work on Snowflake and Lake Suwa dials. He also visited the Micro Artist Studio and described porcelain dial painting. These are observations from that visit, not proof that every Grand Seiko model follows the same process. - Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
The report says an appointment was required to visit the manufacture at that time. That is historical information from 2023, not confirmation of today’s access policy; check with Grand Seiko for current arrangements before planning a visit.
What is the Shinshu Watch Studio?
Shinshu is the broader Shiojiri watchmaking operation. Grand Seiko says the studio makes Spring Drive and quartz watches and works across development, components, finishing, assembly and adjustment. The 2024 Nagano feature also presents the facility as a group of component studios alongside the Micro Artist Studio. This helps explain why a tour can show very different kinds of work in one location: case finishing, dial work and movement assembly are distinct tasks within the larger operation.

How does Spring Drive work?
Spring Drive gets its power from a mainspring, as a mechanical watch does, but its rate is regulated by a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit. Grand Seiko calls this arrangement the Tri-Synchro Regulator. It is not battery-powered quartz, nor is it a purely mechanical escapement. Its seconds hand has a smooth, continuous glide rather than the familiar one-step-per-second movement of a conventional quartz watch. Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive explanation describes the mainspring, quartz oscillator and integrated circuit.
Grand Seiko says the concept took more than 20 years to reach the first Grand Seiko automatic Spring Drive release in 2004. The brand’s later material describes the evolution to a five-day power reserve; its Japanese Shinshu page specifies 120 hours for Spring Drive 5 Days. Those are brand-reported development milestones and specifications, not independent performance measurements.

What makes Grand Seiko 9F quartz different?
Grand Seiko says it created 9F in 1993 and manufactures and assembles it at Shinshu. Rather than treating it as a generic quartz movement, the brand describes several mechanisms designed around the demands of a high-end watch with large hands:
- Twin Pulse Control Motor: drives large, heavy hands.
- Seconds-hand mechanism: intended to reduce visible backlash and help the hand remain steady on its markers.
- Instantaneous date change: advances the date rapidly at the changeover.
Grand Seiko’s undated Shinshu page specifies 9F accuracy of ±10 seconds per year. That is the manufacturer’s published specification, not an independently tested result. The mechanism choices make 9F a different proposition from Spring Drive: 9F is quartz, while Spring Drive uses mainspring power regulated electronically against a quartz oscillator.

What is the Micro Artist Studio?
The Micro Artist Studio is a distinct studio within the Shiojiri facility, not another name for Shinshu as a whole and not a third type of movement. Grand Seiko says it was established in 2000 to make high-end Masterpiece Collection watches, and associates its work with Spring Drive calibers 9R01 and 9R02. The brand describes its founding purpose as preserving and mastering inherited technologies and skills to create luxury Japanese watches. Grand Seiko’s Micro Artist Studio page gives the studio’s role and caliber details.
The two named calibers illustrate the studio’s specialized work:

- Caliber 9R02: uses the Torque Return System and has an 84-hour power reserve, according to Grand Seiko.
As an example of a watch in the Masterpiece Collection, Grand Seiko lists the SBGD201. Its listing is a product reference, not evidence that the model appeared during Blass’s tour.
Quick Recap
How do Shinshu, 9F, Spring Drive and the Micro Artist Studio fit together?
| Term | What it refers to | Power and regulation | Notable feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinshu Watch Studio | The larger watchmaking operation at Seiko Epson’s Shiojiri facility | Produces Spring Drive and quartz watches; the studio itself is not a movement type | Grand Seiko describes work spanning development, components, finishing and assembly |
| Spring Drive | A movement system | Mainspring power regulated by a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit | Smooth-gliding seconds hand |
| 9F quartz | A quartz movement family made at Shinshu | Quartz movement; Grand Seiko describes a Twin Pulse Control Motor and related mechanisms | Designed to drive large hands, reduce visible seconds-hand backlash and change the date instantaneously |
