What is the Grand Seiko SBGD213?
Grand Seiko announced the SBGD213 on March 27, 2023, as a Masterpiece Collection Spring Drive 8-Day Jewelry Watch. The brand describes its design as inspired by the white lion. It connects the lion motif to the gold lion medallion on the case back of the first Grand Seiko, introduced in 1960, and presents the SBGD213 as a blue-sapphire-accented continuation of a white-lion Spring Drive jewelry watch introduced at Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2022.

The watch is a limited edition of eight. Grand Seiko’s release gave an approximate US recommended retail price of $260,000 at launch; that is a historical figure, not a current quote. The release also said select boutiques would present the watch in June 2023, but that does not establish present-day stock or availability.
How many diamonds and sapphires does it have?
According to Grand Seiko’s 2023 release, all 293 gemstones are hand-set: 266 diamonds totaling 5.62 carats and 27 blue sapphires totaling 1.25 carats.

On the bezel, the 60 diamonds are baguette-cut. On the dial, tapered sapphires and baguette diamonds act as hour and minute markers around the blue mother-of-pearl center. Grand Seiko says another 48 diamonds and 12 sapphires sit around the markers. A brilliant-cut blue sapphire is set in the crown.
Grand Seiko summarized the gem work in its March 27, 2023 press release: “The case and dial have 5.62 carats of diamonds and 1.25 carats of blue sapphires, all set by hand.”
Case, dial and dimensions
The case and clasp are made of Platinum 950. The release describes thin 18k white-gold rails between the stones on the dial and a Zaratsu polishing treatment specific to platinum. The watch measures 44.5 mm across and 14.4 mm thick, with 10 bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance, according to the 2023 specification.

Those dimensions and jewel settings make the SBGD213 a substantial, highly ornamental watch rather than a discreet dress-watch design. Grand Seiko’s press release is the source for the specifications; it cautions that product details may change.

The SBGD213 uses the manually wound Spring Drive Caliber 9R01. Grand Seiko specifies an eight-day, or 192-hour, power reserve and accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, also expressed as ±0.5 seconds per day. The movement has 56 jewels.
Through the see-through screw case back, the movement’s one-piece bridge is designed in the image of Mt. Fuji. Grand Seiko says three barrels arranged in sequence supply the eight-day reserve.

Price and current availability
The only price established here is Grand Seiko’s approximate US recommended retail price at launch: $260,000 in 2023. It should not be treated as the watch’s current price. The 2023 announcement does not verify current inventory, a current market value, or a present retailer listing.
